INTERACTION & INTRINSIC EXPERIENCE The Center for Architecture, Design, and Education provides a unique opportunity to re-examine the rich architectural history of Chicago while investigating climatically appropriate energy-efficient construction techniques. A central location for architectural education and research, CADE provides a valuable home for discursive instruction. Tours, lectures, conferences, and schooling provide numerous outlets for architectural curiosity. The organizational structure of the facility and the interspersed informal gathering areas further enhance the educational opportunities through exploration and chance encounter. The building also supplements this mediated educational component by serving as a backdrop for an embodied, or intrinsic, architectural experience. Highlighting the slow, cyclical, adaptive processes required to maintain interior environments, the building is an immersive sensory experience varying throughout one’s visit, and the year, becoming a part of the discourse of architectural
education, and a destination to revisit time and again. The use of mass timber construction highlights Chicago’s unique contradiction that the city has been forged from fire. A particularly long-lasting effect of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 has been the virtual elimination of wood load-bearing tall buildings. Renewed interest in carbon-sequestering, renewable construction typologies, combined with new research and testing, provides a new viability for tall mass timber buildings. Much like the process of ecological succession, the The CADE provides the pilot project for wood construction growing out of the ashes of fire. The use of charred wood cladding protects the internal structure from moisture, sun, and insects, and speaks directly to the ever-present connection between wood construction and fire. This marked contrast between the structural wood members, and the exterior components, instructs the occupants on the nature of the material and the appropriateness of it’s use.
