The Friday Letter Dear Parents/Carers, Your Opinions Matter! What you think really matters to us as a school. At Parents’ Evening we always ask parents and carers to fill in a questionnaire and this has helped us to make the appropriate changes where necessary. Attached to this letter is a short questionnaire about the school in general which I would like you to fill in and return to reception. The more responses we receive the more accurate the questionnaire becomes. As an incentive, we will give a £20 Love to Shop Voucher to one child per year group who returns the completed form. They need to give their name to reception when they hand in the form. MG Harris Visits Cardinal Wiseman On the 8th October we were excited to have the children’s author MG Harris spend the day at Cardinal Wiseman School. She spent the morning giving a very informative and interesting talk to Year 7 and 8 in the hall about her life as a writer. She spoke about her latest, internationally bestselling series of thrilling adventure books; ‘The Joshua Files’. We learnt about how the series came to be, its connection to Mayan mythology and we found out a little about the books characters. After the talk, pupils had the opportunity to ask MG questions and she signed books for those who wish to buy them. In the afternoon, 7C were lucky enough to have a lesson long workshop with MG Harris! She taught them about story building, and together, 7C and MG Harris wrote a futuristic story called ‘Evie V The World’ about robots taking over the planet. The day was a great success. Hopefully the event has encouraged more students to read and write for pleasure as well as giving them an insight into what it is like to be a successful author. We look forward to having more authors visit the school in the future. Pupil Responses ‘I found it inspiring and enjoyable to have a lesson with the author’ – Caleb Day ‘It was an enjoyable experience’ – Liam White ‘It was a great surprise to have a lesson taught by a famous author!’ Riley Mallin

History Homework Club History Homework club will be held every Monday after-school. All years are invited to attend in Room 5, but 11 attendance will be encouraged because they can practise past exam questions with me as part of their ongoing revision. Miss Edwards Website Warning A few students in the school have recently been upset due to highly graphic and inappropriate messages being sent to them through a website called ask.fm. On this website, all messages are anonymous and there is no facility to block people. This website was on the news in August following the suicide of a girl. We advise all students to avoid this website. Debate Mate During assemblies this week, all students learnt about a fantastic opportunity to learn how to debate effectively. Cardinal Wiseman has enrolled in a programme with an international charity called Debate Mate. They run afterschool debating clubs for students to develop the skills to become exceptional young leaders – confidence, interpersonal communication and higher order thinking. This leads to competitions with other schools. Numerous students attended a brief meeting with Miss Crown on Thursday after school. For more information, please go to www.debatemate.com Have a good weekend, Yours sincerely
