Match Notes Setting the Stage Minnesota (11-2 overall, 7-2 Big Ten) will visit Fargo on Sunday looking to take the first step toward history at this year’s NWCA National Duals. The Gophers are the event’s three-time defending champions and hope to become the first team ever to win four in a row. It would be Minnesota’s ninth title overall, also a National Duals record. The Gophers recently completed their Big Ten schedule 7-2, marking the fourth consecutive season of seven or more conference wins for the Maroon and Gold, the second-longest streak under Head Coach J Robinson. In its most recent dual, Minnesota mauled Maryland, 34-12. Prior to that dual, Minnesota had wrestled eight consecutive ranked opponents, the last four of which were ranked in the top 10. North Dakota State (8-3 overall, 4-0 WWC) enters Sunday’s dual having built strong momentum in the past two months. Since suffering their last defeat on Nov. 30, the Bison have won seven consecutive duals. All three of NDSU’s losses this season came during its non-conference schedule against teams now ranked in the top 20. The Gophers and Bison have overlapped at several tournaments this year, most notably the Bison Open (which NDSU hosts) and the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas in early December. At the Bison Open, Minnesota won seven individual titles and North Dakota State captured one (184). At the Cliff Keen Invitational, Minnesota captured the team championship and a pair of individual titles (133 and 157), while the Bison finished 13th as a team.

Series History Sunday’s dual will mark the second year in a row in which the Gophers and Bison open the NWCA National Duals against each other. Minnesota took last year’s match, 35-3, in Columbus, Ohio. The teams first met in 1966, with this year’s meeting representing the 21st all-time match between the two. Minnesota is 19-1 against North Dakota State, a record which includes an active, 17-match winning streak. NDSU’s lone win in the series came back in 1969. Snapshot Preview Across Sunday’s card, there is the potential for seven bouts to be at least the second collegiate match between the participants. The most-wrestled series are at 141, where No. 4 Nick Dardanes has twice defeated Mitch Bengston this year; at 184, where No. 9 Hayden Zillmer has twice defeated No. 13 Brett Pfarr this year; and at 285, where No. 13 Michael Kroells has a 3-0 all-time record against No. 15 Evan Knutson. These individual series also include the two ranked-versusranked matches on Sunday’s card, which will happen at 184 and 285. Minnesota Connection NDSU Head Coach Roger Kish and Assistant Coach Manny Rivera both wrestled at Minnesota and were coached by the current staff. Kish was an All-American in 2006 and 2007, and Rivera in 2008. Both are still among the Gophers’ all-time top 25 in career wins, and Kish sits in 15th on the Gophers’ all-time career pins list.
