When we last saw the Cardinals Junior Kayla May scored a pair of goals as the 17th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 20 Ohio University 4-1 Saturday at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals (2-1) turned in a complete game effort registering 16 shots while limiting the Bobcats to just five in the game. They also held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Louisville got on the scoreboard at the 11:30 mark when sophomore Nicole Youman delivered a pass from the top of the circle and May sent it into the upper left corner of the cage just out of Martin’s reach to make it a 1-0 game. Four minutes later, sophomore Tuli Lim collected a long pass outside the circle and got past Martin, who was closing in for the tackle. With the Ohio defense scrambling to get into position, Lim sent a shot from the right side of the cage into the left corner to give the Cards a 2-0 lead going into halftime. Ohio got on the scoreboard six minutes into the second half when Taylor Anderson scored to pull the Bobcats within one.

Youman tallied the final goal of the game when she tipped a free hit from Karah Nall to make the score 4-1 at the 53:09 mark. Bustanoby (2-1) posted three saves in the game for the Cardinals. Schaefer Selected to BIG EAST Honor Roll Senior back and team captain Lauren Schaefer was named to the BIG EAST honor roll on Sept. 8. Schaefer anchored the Cardinal defense in the 4-1 win over No. 20 Ohio University. She was instrumental in the defensive effort that held the Bobcats to five shots in the game. The Y oung and the R estless Young Restless It is safe to say that the 2008 Cardinals are a very young team. With only four upperclassmen (senior Lauren Schaefer and juniors Heather Bustanoby, Kayla May and Julie Anne Smith) returning, the Cardinals are going to depend on their leadership and the youthful enthusiasm of 19 underclassmen - including 10 freshmen.

2008 Field Hockey Game Notes Youman V aluable on Offense Valuable Sophomore midfielder Nicole Youman has been involved in all of the Cardinals’ scoring so far in the young season. She has had either a goal or an assist in each of the three games and is tied for the team lead with six points (2G, 2A). Youman on BIG EAST Honor R oll Roll Sophomore midfielder Nicole Youman was selected to the BIG EAST Field Hockey honor roll on Sept. 1. Youman notched the only goal of the game as the Cards opened the season with a 1-0 win over Duke in the first game of the Champion’s Challenge. She dished out an assist in the 6-1 loss to No. 12 Michigan State in the championship game. Bustin Back F Frr om Beijing U of L head coach Pam Bustin was busy in the off-season and missed the beginning of the 2008 preseason. But she has a good excuse. She was at the Beijing Olympics as an assistant with the USA Field Hockey team. Since being selected as an assistant in 2005, Bustin helped guide the national team through the rigors of qualifying for the Olympics, including winning the Kazan Olympic Qualifier to seal the bid and mark the first time the United States has competed in the Olympic Games since Bustin was a player in the 1996 Atlanta Games. The U.S. Olympic Team for Women’s Field Hockey fell to Spain, 3-2, in extra time at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium on Wednesday. The result secured eighth place for the USA in their final game at the 2008 Olympic Games. The USA completed pool B play in fourth place with a record of one win, one loss and three draws. Spain finished fourth in Pool A with two wins and three losses. Schaefer ouman Named to BIG Schaefer,, Y Youman reseason T eam Preseason Team EAST P Lauren Schaefer and Nicole Youman were unanimous selections to the 2008 BIG EAST Preseason field hockey team and the Cardinals were picked to finish third in a vote by the league’s seven head coaches. The defending BIG EAST field hockey champion Connecticut Huskies were selected by the conference coaches to win the BIG EAST regular season crown in 2008, receiving six of the seven

first-place votes. Syracuse, who finished tied for fourth last season, was chosen to place second - just ahead of Louisville - with 27 points, including one first place selection. Louisville which finished the 2007 season with a 14-6 overall record and were 5-1 in BIG EAST play, received 26 points to place third in the preseason poll. The Cardinals finished last season as regular season co-champs, but fell to Providence 2-0 in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals. Senior Lauren Schaefer and sophomore Nicole Youman were both unanimous selections to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. Last season, Schaefer was named to the All-BIG EAST second team and was BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24. Youman was named to the All-BIG EAST first team and was a NFHCA All-West Region selection in 2007. The BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will take place on Nov. 8 and 9. The University of Connecticut will host the four-team event, seeded by conference point total. Head Coach Pam Bustin The Bustin F ile File At Louisville (ten years)

Years at Louisville: Eleventh Season Alma Mater: Massachusetts, 1990

As she enters her eleventh season at the helm of the University of Louisville field hockey team, Pam Bustin continues to raise the bar for her Cardinals on the national scene. Her enthusiasm and diligent work ethic have translated into success both on and off the field. Under Bustin’s guidance over the past decade, the Cards have won five conference championships and have made an impact on the national scene, appearing in the National Field Hockey Coaches Top 20 rankings in each of the past seven years. The Cardinals are coming off of their second consecutive BIG EAST regular season championship in 2007, after going 5-1 in league play. U of L was also a mainstay in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association top 20 poll throughout the season, reaching as high as No. 11. Bustin was also busy in the off-season, serving as an assistant coach for USA Field Hockey. For the past three years, Bustin has helped guide the nation’s best players down a long road to the United States’ first Olympic appearance since the 1996 Atlanta Games. The berth was secured in April 2008 when USA Field Hockey marched through the Kazan Olympic Qualifier to claim one of the final three spots in the Beijing Games. The Bustin era at U of L... On October 22, 2006, the University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Rutgers 4-1, marking Bustin’s 100th win at U of L, a significant milestone, given the humble beginnings of her career here when she inherited a program that was in the midst of a 34 game losing streak. Since joining the Cardinals in 1998, Bustin has taken the then-cellar dwellers of the MidAmerican Conference to three-time league champion. The Cards grabbed a share of their first regular season championship in 2002 with Bustin claiming MAC Coach of the Year honors. U of L followed that feat by winning the conference tournament in 2003 and earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Cards said good-bye to the MAC in 2004 by sweeping the regular season and successfully defending their tournament title. Bustin again took Coach of the Year honors as the Cards. The Cardinals joined the very competitive BIG EAST Conference in 2005 and had solid results while adjusting to a different style of play. In 2006, year two of its BIG EAST membership, U of L took a share of the regular season champion honors and earned a top seed in the league tournament. The 2006 Cards posted a 5-1 record en route to their first regular BIG EAST Conference championship. U of L amassed a 12-8 overall record in the midst of one of the toughest schedules in the nation in which ten of Louisville’s games came against opponents ranked in the top 20. Bustin’s Cardinals followed in 2007 with a share of the league’s regular season title, going 146 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Blueprint for success.. When she came to Louisville, Bustin orchestrated one of the most remark able programbuilding efforts in the nation. U of L’s achievements over the past decade are the result of hard work and a well-developed game plan set into place when U of L Director of Athletics Tom Jurich hired Bustin in 1998. In her first season, the Cardinals broke a 34-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over longtime rival Saint Louis. The follow-

ing year, her team improved with a 5-16 record the last time one of Bustin’s teams has produced a losing record. The 2000 squad’s 14-8 campaign set a shortlived school record for most wins in a season. That same year, the Cardinals claimed their first national ranking, debuting at No. 17 in the NFHCA poll. Bustin was named the 2001 MAC Coach of the Year after leading the Cards to a record-setting 16-5 season. Louisville also weighed in as high as No. 6 in the NCAA rankings and remained in the NCAA and the NFHCA’s top 20 throughout the entire season. Her 2002 team achieved the school’s first MAC title and finished the season with a 13-7 record. During that time, the Cardinals reached the highest ranking in program history, No. 4 in the NFHCA poll. The 2005 Cardinals produced a high-octane offense, leading the BIG EAST and the nation in scoring. First team All-America selection and 2005 BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Jessica Javelet, led the nation with 30 goals and 74 points, while All-West Region first team selection Janelle Avila was fifth in the nation with goals and tied for sixth with 49 points. In 2006 and 2007, U of L won back-toback BIG EAST regular season titles. Life before TEAM CARDINAL Before coming to U of L in 1998, Bustin was the head coach at Hofstra University. In just one year, she turned around a struggling program and brought them to a 9-9 overall record and an America East Conference record of 3-5. As a player A 1990 graduate of the University of Massa chusetts, Bustin was a four-year letterwinner (1985-88) team captain, team MVP, an All-Atlantic 10 selection, a first team All-America selection and the Honda-Broderick Award nominee as female athlete of the year in 1988. UMass made four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances during her playing days, including a third place finish in 1987. From 1987 through 1989, Bustin played on the United States Under-21 Team, serving as team captain and competing in the 1986 , 1987, 1989 and 1990 U.S. Olympic Festivals. She helped capture a silver medal in the Junior Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1989. Also in 1989, Bustin was named to the U.S. Field Hockey team and played with the national squad through 1996.She completed her playing career at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Coaching on the national scene Once her playing days were over, Bustin remained an integral part of the national scene this time on the sidelines. She is currently an assistant for the USA National Field Hockey team under head coach Lee Bodimeade and has helped guide the United States to a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In June, 2007, while serving as acting coach for the national team for the AtaHolding Champions Challenge, she guided the USA to a bestever fourth place finish. She was also part of the coaching staff as the U.S earned a silver medal in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Bustin began her stint as an assistant coach for USA Field Hockey in 2006 when she was selected to help prepare the team for the World Cup Qualifier - where they finished fourth to earn a trip to the World Cup.
