NCAA West Regional Championships (Golden Gate Park San Francisco, CA) The NNU men held their own in the rankings, taking 7th place in the West Regional meet. Freshman Barak Watson (Columbia HS, Nampa, ID) made the All Region Team, placing 11th with a 10k time of 31:39. He is currently the 2nd fastest male in NNU’s 10k history, as well as the first male to make it to the NCAA DII National meet as an individual. Jesse Baggenstos also had a notable performance, placing in the top 50 and coming in as the 6th fastest freshman of the day. Matt Stark, Neil Easter, Kyle Gray, Seth Clark, and Luke Hetrick rounded out the men’s team. The men are very young this year, with eight new freshmen . The only two seniors on the team, Kyle Gray and Hank Hetrick will be missed. The NNU women placed 6th at the West Regional meet, moving up two spots in the highly competitive region. The women were lead by junior Jaci Puga, closely followed by freshman Jordan Powell and Conference New-Comer of the Year Michelle Phillips, a senior transfer from Mid-America Nazarene. Christine Harwood and Ashley Rendahl both ran a great race, rounding out NNU’s top five scorers. Thank you for your support this cross country season! NCAA DII All-American Honors Barak Watson Becomes the first male All-American in cross country. Barak competed at the NCAA Division II cross country meet in Evansville, Indiana on November 21st, he placed 38 place in a very competitive field of 182. The top 40 this year received All-American honors. Barak was the 3rd fastest GNAC runner of the day and the 4th fastest runner out of the NCAA Division II West Region.

2009 NNU Track Highlights

Last year’s track season was the most successful track season in NNU’s history. During the Indoor track season the women won four Conference titles. Ashley Puga made the NCAA DII national meet in both the 800m and the women's DMR team, which also included Jaci Puga, Jamie Beaty, and Elisa Decker. Ashley Puga won the 800m in a time of 2:07.24 ,to become NNU’s first NCAA DII National Champion. The DMR team finished 8th, becoming NNU’s first NCAA DII All American relay team. The Outdoor GNAC Championships were canceled due to a swine flu outbreak on Western Oregon University’s campus the night the team arrived in Oregon. Despite the let down, NNU took the most individuals to nationals in program history, including Josh Heidegger, Laura VonArx, Ashley Puga, Lakiesha Nilles, and Dallas Beaty. Ashley Puga took home another National title in the 800m with a time of 2:07.63 and another All-American honor in the 1500m, placing 8th. Performance AllAmerican honors also went to Josh Heidegger, a sophomore, who took 2nd place in the Javelin with a throw of 223’¼”and to Dallas Beaty, who placed 3rd in the 400m hurdles, in a school record time of 52.05. Lakiesha placed 14th in the Javelin and Laura finished 12th in the Triple Jump. 2010 Indoor Track season is just around the corner. The men and women start the Indoor season on December 4th at the Idaho Center in Nampa. We invite you to come and support the team!
