This Week: The Metro State indoor track teams will open the 2010-11 season at the Colorado Mines Alumni Extravaganza on Saturday in Golden, Colo. Metro State Season Outlook: The Metro State men’s track team was picked to finish seventh in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference the women’s team was picked 10th in the preseason coaches polls. Metro State is the only school that does not sponsor field events, the reason for the last-place pick for both squads. Men’s runner Shawn Lindbom was the only Roadrunner on the 10-person preseason allconference team. Last year, Lindbom finished second at the RMAC Championships in the 800 meters and was named first team all-conference. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships. Other men’s runners that earned All-RMAC honors last season that return this year are Carl Arnold III (800 meters and distance medley relay), Derek Fiorini (400) and Brandon Johnson (mile). Arnold was also a member of the All-America DMR team last winter. Eiger Erickson and Kyle Simcox have both had a strong fall on the cross country team as well and will push for all-conference honors in track. The women’s squad returns Xenia Flores and Kery Allen. Flores ran a provisional qualifying during the outdoor season last year in the 5k and was named all-conference in cross country this fall. Allen has been a steady contributor in track and cross country during the last year and will compete in the middle distance events in indoor. She ran the cross country team’s fastest time at the NCAA Central Region Championships on Nov. 20. Vickey VanAlstine-Tauer earned all-conference honors in cross country this fall as a freshman. Julia Hernandez and Judith Chavez will also join the track team this winter. Chavez is making a return to ths sport after a year off. She earned second team All-RMAC honors in 2009 during the indoor season in the 800 meters. Vail Davis and Adrienne Bratton will both compete in the sprints and jumps. RMAC Preseason Poll: The men’s team was chosen to finish seventh in the RMAC and the women were picked 10th. Shawn Lindbom was the team’s only preseason all-conference runner.

Head Coach John Supsic • Second year as head coach Supsic was named the head track and cross country coach at Metro State following the 2009 cross country season after he helped the men’s and women’s cross country teams both qualify for the NCAA Championships as an assistant coach. The men’s team placed 14th and the women finished 21st. Both teams finished in the top-five in the highly competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. As head coach of the track teams in the spring of 2010, he led the men’s indoor team 27th-place finish at the NCAA Championships and the outdoor team to a 20th-place finish in the NCAA Championships. He coached the men’s distance medley relay team to third place at the indoor championships. In outdoor, Anthony Luna finished second in the 800 meters and Shawn Lindbom came in fourth as both runners earned All-America honors. Prior to assisting with Metro State in the fall of 2009, he served for over a year as an assistant with Regis University’s cross country team, designing workouts for student-athletes. Supsic had been an accountant in real estate from 2004-09, most recently with Mercy Housing, Inc. beginning in July, 2008, and spent three years as an auditor prior to his time in real estate. He graduated from Towson University in Maryland in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. While at Towson, Supsic was a two-year captain of the cross country team and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors three times. Since graduation, Supsic continued his running career with the Boulder Distance Project for four years under the former marathon world record holder, Steve Jones. His team won the U.S. marathon relay championship in 2006. A native of Baltimore, Md., Supsic is married to the former Dr. Kristin Carpenter.
