Outdoor Track Notes Metro State Update: Metro State men’s track runner Brandon Johnson became the first Roadrunner to post a provisional qualifying mark this season last Saturday in the 1500 meters at the CU Invitational in Boulder, Colo. Johnson finished seventh overall in 3:55.15, converting to 3:49.54 for altitude, which was well under the provisional standard of 3:52.50. In the men’s 3000 meters, Kraig Kleiner broke the school record in 8:55.80 and finished fifth. The previous record was held by Zach Mares in 9:02.14, set last spring. Derek Fiorini had a pair of strong performances in the 200 and the 400. Beginning with the 400, Fiorini ran the fastest time of his career to place second out of 38 runners in 48.18, just .10 seconds off the top time. In the 200, he battled a 6.1-meter per hour wind during his race, the more than twice as strong as any of the other heats in the 200, and still placed seventh in 22.58. For the women, Carissa Sinda turned in another strong performance in the 800, placing 10th out of 36 competitors in 2:20.00. Her time was the fastest time this season for Metro State by seven seconds. Julia Hernandez also

2011 SCHEDULE

Head Coach John Supsic • Second year as head coach

Supsic was named the head track and cross country coach at Metro State following the 2009 cross country season after he helped the men’s and women’s cross country teams both qualify for the NCAA Championships as an assistant coach. The men’s team placed 14th and the women finished 21st. Both teams finished in the top-five in the highly competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. As head coach of the track teams in the spring of 2010, he led the men’s indoor team 27th-place finish at the NCAA Championships and the outdoor team to a 20th-place finish in the NCAA Championships. He coached the men’s distance medley relay team to third place at the indoor championships. In outdoor, Anthony Luna finished second in the 800 meters and Shawn Lindbom came in fourth as both runners earned All-America honors. Prior to assisting with Metro State in the fall of 2009, he served for over a year as an assistant with Regis University’s cross country team, designing workouts for student-athletes. Supsic had been an accountant in real estate from 2004-09, most recently with Mercy Housing, Inc. beginning in July, 2008, and spent three years as an auditor prior to his time in real estate. He graduated from Towson University in Maryland in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. While at Towson, Supsic was a two-year captain of the cross country team and earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors three times. Since graduation, Supsic continued his running career with the Boulder Distance Project for four years under the former marathon world record holder, Steve Jones. His team won the U.S. marathon relay championship in 2006. A native of Baltimore, Md., Supsic is married to the former Dr. Kristin Carpenter.
