History of Ogden

Memories From Albert Woods: Buffalo Breweries Bullwhackers & Boomtown Hotel James Mallon ran a hotel during WWI for a few years, which was located west of the present post office. Hannagan Elevator Was originally built an operated by Steve Clark around 1918. He bought wheat and kafir corn. Mr. Clark came from Elbow community east of Manhattan. He sold out to James Hannagan and moved west to go into the oil business. The Hannagan family continued to operate the elevator for several years. They closed it to the public and kept it for family

use. It was finally torn down in 1978 for safety reasons. The railroad tracks ran along side of it and made vision difficult at the street intersections which caused some car-train accidents. LumberYard Steve Clark also built the lumber yard and operated it. Harry Blumberg was the last to run the yard, which was later sold to Harry Guthrie. The Stockyards Near the Hannagan Elevator along the railroad tracks were the stockyards. Cattle, hogs and sheep were shipped in and out by local farmers and most livestock was shipped on to Kansas City. On December 15, 1899, my father shipped

Old Hotel in Ogden, Kansas-19l0

sheep from there. Harry Bearman used to ship in a lot of Brahma cattle and one time they were scared and wild. They broke loose from the pens and scattered all over Ogden. Farmers from the area were called to help round them up and there was some questions as to weather all the cattle were found. If you have any history of Ogden that you would like to have published in the Ogden Sun, please bring all stories, pictures and other information to the Ogden Community Center 220 Willow Street Ogden, Kansas. All information must be submitted by the 15th of each month. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at 785-537 -0351.
