In a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal series, the Saints will once again travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats in a best-of-three series to see who will advance to the conference tournament at Clarkson next weekend. The fifth-seeded Saints and fourth-seeded Bobcats were in a tight race for homeice up until the final game of the regular season. St. Lawrence did all it could to control its own destiny, shutting out Union 4-0 on Friday before topping RPI 3-2 on senior day at Appleton Arena, but required the help of at least one Bobcat loss to pull even in the standings. Quinnipiac also swept its final league weekend, with a come-from-behind win at Cornell and a shutout of Colgate, leaving them two points head of the Saints and earning the right to host the series. Other playoff series this weekend include: Dartmouth at Clarkson, Yale at Harvard and Princeton at Cornell.

About the Saints...

St. Lawrence finished the regular season 13-17-3 and 12-7-3 against ECAC Hockey opponents and was led by senior defenseman and co-captain Mel Desrochers who has 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points heading into this weekend’s series. Twenty-two of her 31 overall points came in conference play. Sophomore Kailee Heidersbach found her scoring touch in February, netting five of her eight goals this season in the Saints last five games, including two against the Bobcats on Feb. 8. Junior netminder Carmen MacDonald has been stellar of late, and is currently ranked seventh among Division I goaltenders in save percentage at .937.

About No. 7 Quinnipiac...

Senior Kelly Babstock is ranked among the league leaders in goals (18), assists (28) and points (46) and is eight nationally, averaging 1.35 points per game. Junior goaltender Chelsea Laden picked up her second ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week award earlier this week, after helping the Bobcats to a road sweep of No. 3 Cornell and Colgate and securing the No. 4 seed in the league tournament.

Last Time Out...

In the team’s last meeting, the Saints shut out the Bobcats in Appleton Arena to gain their first win over a nationally-ranked team during the 2013-14 season, as well as snap a two-game skid. It was only the second time Quinnipiac had been shut out all season, having previously lost 3-0 to Clarkson at home.

Plenty of History...

The Saints took three points from the Bobcats in the regular season, earning a 1-1 tie on their first trip to High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in November, before gaining the shutout on Feb. 8 at Appleton Arena. Since first meeting in 2005, St. Lawrence has built a 12-6-3 lead in the series. The Saints took the first eight matchups against the Bobcats from November 2005 to February 2009 and won six of those eight games scoring five or more goals. In last season’s three-game quarterfinal series, the Saints took the first of three with a 1-0 overtime victory on a goal by Kayla Raniwsky. The Saturday matchup appeared to be all Quinnipiac in the opening periods, but Rylee Smith scored two goals in a span of 31 seconds in the final minute of third period to tie the game at two and force overtime. Both extra-attacker goals, Smith’s second tally came with one second reamining in regulation. But it was Quinnipiac that struck next, nearly a full game later, when Amanda Colin finally broke a 2-2 tie 8:55 into the third overtime to even the series at one game a piece and force the if necessary Sunday game. Led by then seniors Brooke Fernandez and Kelly Sabatine, the Saints notched two first-period goals in the final game of the series and blanked the Bobcats 2-0 to advance.

Mel Makes Her Mark...

In the Saints 3-2 win over RPI, senior defenseman Mel Desrochers notched her 26th career goal on “Senior Day” to become the all-time program leader in goals by a defenseman at St. Lawrence. She was previously tied with former Saints standouts Annie Guay ‘08 and Brooke Fernandez ‘13.

The 100-point Club...

Senior forward and co-captain Rylee Smith is the only active Saints player to have reached the illustrious 100-point plateau for her career. With 124 points she is currently 12th on the program’s all-time leading scorer list, just 10 points behind her former teammate Kelly Sabatine ‘13.

50 & Counting...

Carmen MacDonald recorded her 50th career victory with a 4-0 shutout of Union at Appleton Arena last weekend. For her career, the Pictou, Nova Scotia native is 51-32-11 with a .601 win percentage and 13 career shutouts. Entering the weekend series with the Bobcats, she has a career goals-against average of 2.04 and a .930 save percentage. Not only has the junior amassed 51 wins, but she also recorded 51 saves this season in the team’s 1-1 tie with Cornell at Appleton Arena on Jan. 24.
