# Midwest Conference matches Home matches in CAPS

Everything will start upfront for Grinnell College as it prepares for the 2016 football campaign. All five starters return on the offensive line in center Robbie McCarty ’18, guards Elijah Smythurst ’18 and Cole Riley ’19, and tackles Grant Koch ’17 and Ethan Lahn ’17. “Grant and Ethan are threeyear starters for us; and Robbie, Elijah, and Cole improved throughout all of last year and should be even better,” said coach Jeff Pedersen ’02. The coach noted that Kevin Gubner ’20 and Alex Quist ’20 will also get the opportunity to play. Taking over duties at quarterback will be transfer Tony Bergida ’18. “He’s looked good through the preseason,” said Pedersen. “He’s going to be a different type of quarterback than we’ve had recently. He’s making good decisions and has a great knack for reads and putting the ball where it needs to be.” Sparking the backfield will be running back Jacob Bernholtz ’17 and tight end/running back Carson Dunn ’18. “We’re hoping for a lot of production from Bernie and Carson,” said Pedersen. “We’re also looking for Erik [Henderson ’19] to stretch the field a bit as a receiver and also have an impact from Chip [Scott ’19] and Michael [O’Shea ’20].” Like the offensive line, the defensive line also returns intact with Matt Medrano ’17, Jeff Keele ’19, and Hassan Thompson ’19. “Having that group back will be huge for us,” said Pedersen. “Jeff and Hassan have gotten bigger and faster, and Matt is primed for his best season yet.” Linebacker Ryan Slager ’19 ranked third in the nation in tackles last season. “In some ways this is the best position group because of how Ryan ranked statistically, but it’s also a question mark since we’ll be starting three new players.” Among others looking for time at linebacker will be DJ Coleman ’19, Luke Howard ’19, Kent Hoover ’17, Rick Johnson ’20, and Brad Knowlton ’20. The backfield includes returnees Joe Galaske ’17, Ben Lim ’19, and Hoover. “We’ve shuffled guys around a bit,” said Pedersen. “We have Joe back at cornerback along with Ibuki [Ogasawara ’17]. We’re looking to have Ben and Vinny [Pavoni ’19] at safety, plus anticipating impact from talented first-year players Jordan [Hall ’20] and Max [Hill ’20].” The Pioneers will have to replace record-breaking punter and kicker Graham Fisher ’16. Pedersen said Ogasawara and Pavoni are working in the kicking department, while Hoover and David Taylor ’20 are in line for punting chores. Pedersen is hoping to improve on last season’s 2-8 mark. “We talk a lot about being processoriented with these guys,” he said. “If we can focus on that and not worry about what else is going on, we can be vastly improved and surprise some people.” By Ted Schultz, Sports Information Director

Grinnell College Football Timeline 1889

1978

Grinnell College played its first football game on Nov. 16, which was also the first intercollegiate football game played west of the Mississippi River. The record book shows Iowa College (now Grinnell College) posted a 24-0 victory over State University of Iowa (now University of Iowa). Using a variation of passing and the flying wedge, a formation that hid the ball carrier with a V, Grinnell shot out to a 10-0 halftime lead and continued to cruise from there for the victory. The win was the lone game played by Grinnell that season.

Edd Bowers ’43 retired as coach with 71 wins, making him the winningest coach in the program’s history.

1892

1989

Grinnell played its first season of more than three games, posting a 4-2 record. Included in the victories was a 132-0 thrashing of the Des Moines YMCA. Grinnell outscored its foes 248-72 for the season.

1912 Grinnell recorded its 100th victory in program history with a 33-3 victory over Coe College. Grinnell went on to finish 6-2.

1917 Grinnell posted its first perfect record since the 1-0 mark in 1889 by winning all of its eight games. Among the wins was a 77-0 blasting of Highland Park. The Pioneers also posted shutouts against St. Ambrose, University of Iowa, and Coe.

1926 Grinnell recorded an impressive 6-1-1 record, with the lone setback coming to Oklahoma A&M. The Pioneers gave up just 27 points the entire season.

1982 Although the Pioneers struggled to a 1-8 record, running back Gene Reid ’83 rambles for 1,270 yards and nine touchdowns en route to earning third-team All-America honors. Grinnell celebrated its 100th anniversary of football.

1998 The Pioneers put together perhaps the most talked-about season in school history by posting a 10-0 mark and claiming the Midwest Conference title. The Pioneers opened the year with a 66-0 win over nonconference foe Principia and went on to average more than 42 points per game in their nine league contests. The Pioneers capped their perfect record with a 44-28 victory at Lawrence in the season finale. Quarterback Troy Dougherty ’00 generated 3,296 total yards. He and tackle Mark Trocinski ’99 earned firstteam All-America honors from Hewlett-Packard, while receiver Dave Snider ’99 was a second-teamer and receiver Richard Wemer ’99 a third-teamer. Wemer and Dougherty were members of the Football Gazette All-America second team, while Trocinski was a third-teamer.

2000 Jeff Pedersen ’02 earned Hewlett-Packard All-America honors for the second season in a row.

1939

2007

Grinnell entered the Midwest Conference and finished 2-3 in league play, with wins coming against Monmouth and Coe. Grinnell was 3-5-1 overall. Knox and Ripon tied for the Midwest Conference title with identical 3-1-1 marks.

Greg Wallace retired as coach with 68 victories, making him the second winningest coach in the program’s history.

1941 Grinnell won its 200th game in program history with a 12-0 blanking of Colorado College. The Pioneers were also competitive in the Midwest Conference by recording a 4-2 mark.

1943, 1944 Grinnell did not play football for two seasons during World War II.

1945

2008 Max Hawsey became Grinnell’s new head coach and went on to win his first game guiding the Pioneers as they worked past Cornell College. In the final game of the season, a home contest against Beloit College, Brett Maloney ’09 broke the Midwest Conference record for tackles in a year with 161.

2010

Grinnell played just one game, a 27-6 loss to Carthage, before the remainder of the season was canceled.

Jeff Pedersen ’02 took over as the Pioneers’ interim coach and leads the team to its first winning season since 2004. He went on to be named the 2010 Midwest Conference Coach of the Year and the “interim” tag was removed from his title.

1946

2011

Grinnell returned to playing a full schedule and posted a 3-5 mark. Records show this was the first time an all-conference team was named, with quarterback Kermit Steinbeck ’48 and end Mel White ’50 earning first-team recognition.

Robert Seer ’12 rewrote the Pioneer record book for receiving, shattering program career records for touchdown receptions (46), receptions (232) and receiving yards (3,262) while tying the school mark for receptions in a season (84).

1961

2012

The Pioneers won their first Midwest Conference title. Grinnell tied with two other teams, Cornell and St. Olaf, as all three posted 6-2 league marks. The Pioneers posted three shutouts and were led on offense by John Hartung ’62’s nine touchdowns.

1962

Cody Weber ’13 was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after the Pioneers defeated perennial power Monmouth College. Additionally, a touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Poulos ’16 to Weber in that contest was named the D3football.com Play of the Week.

2014

Grinnell repeats as Midwest Conference champion with a 7-0-1 mark in league play. The Pioneers clinched the title with a 32-21 victory over Cornell College in the season finale. Elston Bowers ’65 and Carlton Peterson ’63 led the offense with nine and seven touchdowns, respectively.

David Ternes ’15 was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after breaking a school record with 4.5 sacks against Lawrence University.

1976

2015

The Pioneers recorded their 300th victory in program history with a 34-6 decision over St. Ambrose. Grinnell won its first three games of the season before dropping the last five.

Ryan Slager ’19 ranked third nationally and first in the Midwest Conference in tackles per game with 13.4.
