Mark Wasikowski, an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the Universities of Oregon, Arizona, Florida as well as Southeast Missouri State during his career, was hired as the head coach of Purdue baseball in June 2016. Wasikowski has played and coached in the College World Series. He helped lead teams to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances during a successful 20-year run as an assistant coach. He also won an NCAA championship as the starting third baseman and a captain on Pepperdine’s 1992 College World Series team. Wasikowski (pronounced WOZ-uh-COW-ski) played for and worked under three-time national Coach of the Year Andy Lopez for a combined 18 years. He was part of Lopez’s coaching staffs at both Florida (1999-2001) and Arizona (2002-11) before joining George Horton’s staff at Oregon in the summer of 2011, spending five seasons with Horton in Eugene. Wasikowski was an assistant coach on Arizona’s 2004 College World Series team, the same year that Horton led Cal State Fullerton to the national title. Wasikowski has been an assistant coach on teams that have made 11 NCAA Regional appearances since 2003, including six straight seasons from 2010 to 2015. Oregon qualified for the NCAA Tournament in four of his five years, hosting two Regionals and a 2012 Super Regional. When Lopez took over the Arizona program in 2001 with Wasikowski by his side, the Wildcats had been to one Regional in the last nine years. During Wasikowski’s 10 years as an assistant in Tucson, Arizona qualified for the postseason seven times. Wasikowski is the 20th head coach in Purdue’s 129-year history, but only the Boilermakers’ fourth full-time skipper since 1978. Wasikowski has coached 117 players that have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, a list highlighted by 28 big leaguers. During his 10 seasons at Arizona, Wasikowski coached 59 Major League Baseball draft picks and 22 future big leaguers. As the recruiting coordinator, he assembled the Wildcats’ 2012 national championship team, leaving for Oregon before the start of the 2011-12 school year. Oregon was one of only three teams nationally to win 40-plus games every year from 2012 to 2014. During his five seasons in Eugene, the Ducks had 23 players drafted. Oregon also had a perfect 1,000 APR score as recently as 2015. Wasikowski was a two-time All-West Coast Conference honoree at Pepperdine after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Hawaii and Rancho Santiago Junior College. He was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1993 MLB Draft, but opted to remain at Pepperdine to finish his bachelor’s degree in business administration while serving as a student assistant under Lopez during the 1994 season. He also has a master’s of business administration from Southeast Missouri. Wasikowski was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame along with all of his teammates from the 1992 national championship team. He led the Waves in doubles as a junior and hits as a senior, guiding Pepperdine back to the NCAA Tournament in 1993. Wasikowski and his wife, Lori Jo, are the parents of two daughters, Joelle and Kelsey. WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT MARK WASIKOWSKI... George Horton – Head Coach at the University of Oregon “I believe Mark Wasikowski is one of the brightest, up-and-coming baseball coaches in the country. There is no doubt that Mark will make a huge impact as the new leader at Purdue. We will miss Coach Waz and wish him great fortune.” Andy Lopez – Former Head Coach at Pepperdine, Florida & Arizona; Two-Time NCAA Champion “Mark Wasikowski is more than ready to be a successful head coach. He will not only establish a winning culture, but he and his family will be a great addition to Purdue University and the community.” Mark Hogan – Head Coach at Southeast Missouri State From 1996 to 2012 “Mark is arguably the best recruiter in the country. He’s going to be a tireless and energetic guy. His understanding of the inner workings of the game is off the charts, and they were that way almost 20 years ago when he was with me. What a great, great hire for Purdue. We are thrilled for Mark and his family.” Nick Hundley – Colorado Rockies Catcher, 2005 All-American at Arizona “I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d go to Arizona. I thought I was going to Stanford or Tulane when Waz started recruiting me. I felt like he cared more about me than anyone I talked to in the recruiting process. He out recruited every other school. My dad was a college football coach for 41 years, and he told me during the process that Arizona will get good players if I went there because Waz could recruit and get players in there. Then when I got to school, he was more concerned with me as a person than he was with my performance. He stayed on me about school and put together a three-year graduation plan so I could be done with school if I signed after my junior year. As a player, I left Arizona much better than when I arrived. He was very good at the mental part of the game and pushing us to get to places we didn’t know we could go. I still talk to Waz about once every three months. He is very loyal, and I would trust his character to run my program.” Robert Refsnyder – New York Yankees Second Baseman, 2012 College World Series MVP at Arizona “I can’t say enough about Waz. He was a diligent recruiter and true competitor. I have the upmost respect for him. He’s a family man and a family coach. If you give your all as a player, he will give you everything he’s got. Love that guy!” Trevor Crowe – 2005 First Round MLB Draft Pick, 2005 All-American at Arizona “My experience with Coach Waz at the University of Arizona was an important part of my development as a baseball player, but was more important to my development as a human being. I hope my child has the chance to develop as a baseball player and a man under the leadership of a man like Coach Waz.”

They managed to double last San Diego St. 21-38 29-13 +8 + .334 +4 + .308 year’s win total by April 21. Purdue’s nine Big Ten wins are Illinois-Chicago 25-30 29-9 St. John’s 28-26-1 29-6 +1 + .311 more than the last two seasons combined (8). Arkansas 26-29 33-10 +7 + .294 • The Boilermakers experienced quite a bit of roster turnover, but the newcomers have helped spearhead this season’s turnaround. Among position players, newcomers have made a combined 189 starts for Purdue. On the mound, Gareth Stroh (10) and Jack Dellinger (8) have accounted for 18 of the 19 starts by newcomers. Combined, that’s over 200 starts by Boilermakers that weren’t on the team last season. And they may not have started a game this season, but relievers/newcomers Ross Learnard, Dalton Parker and Cameron Williams (3 saves, 24 Ks vs. 6 walks in 21 innings) have also been a big part of the turnaround. • By rallying to win April 19 at Indiana State, Purdue avoided dropping below the .500 mark for the first time since March 16. By contrast, prior to this season the Boilermakers’ overall record had not been over .500 since it was 3-2 early in the 2013 campaign. The seven-game win streak from March 13 to 25 fueled Purdue’s ability to maintain a winning record since the spring break trip. But winning on Fridays has been significant as well. The Boilermakers are 8-2 on Fridays, suffering their only losses at Cal State Northridge (March 10) and Ohio State (March 31). • With a 2-7 record on Sundays, those Friday wins have also helped Purdue avoid being swept in a series so far this year. The 2012 Big Ten championship team went all season without being swept. Since 1990, the 2001 and 2006 Boilermakers are the only other teams to avoid a traditional weekend series sweep for a full season. However, the 2001 squad all lost all six of its games (vs. five different teams) in Southern California on the spring break trip. STROH’S COMPLETE GAME LEADS TO PURDUE’S THIRD B1G PITCHER OF THE WEEK AWARD • Highlighted by a complete-game two-hitter in the April 22 win vs. Illinois, Gareth Stroh retired 30 of the 33 batters he faced over 10 innings to earn Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors. He actually closed out two of the Boilermakers’ four wins for the week of April 17 to 23 after also working a scoreless ninth in the 10-7 win at Indiana State, earning a save in his first relief appearance of the season. The lefty led the way as the pitching staff compiled a 2.81 ERA over five games. Purdue limited Illinois to four runs in the three-game series sweep. • Stroh joined Tanner Andrews (twice) as Boilermakers to win Big Ten Pitcher of the Week this season. The Boilermakers did not have a Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honoree from 2013 through 2016, but have won the award a league-high three times this year. Stroh retired the first 12 batters of the game in order and 27 of 29 total. A two-out solo homer in the ninth inning by the Fighting Illini’s top hitter not only broke up the shutout, but also ended Stroh’s streak of 14 consecutive batters retired. He struck out a career-high eight while not issuing a walk. In his two starts at Alexander Field this season, Stroh has surrendered a run in just two of the 15 innings he has pitched. Along with recording 12 strikeouts vs. just two walks, he has given up only nine hits. • Stroh became Purdue’s first starting pitcher to earn a win and a save in the same week since Robert Ramer accomplished the feat on the 2013 spring break trip (win at Cincinnati, save at Evansville). WARDEN LEADS THE NATION IN HBP; PURDUE TOPS IN BIG TEN IN HBP, SAC BUNTS • Evan Warden (26) and Harry Shipley (18) are ranked first and fourth nationally in hit by pitch. Together, they’ve been plunked more than nine Big Ten teams, all but Indiana (48), Maryland (46) and Michigan (45). They’ve accounted for 72 percent of Purdue’s HBPs (61) this year. Skyler Hunter and Evan Kennedy are tied for third on team with three HBPs apiece. • Warden needed only 30 games to break the program’s single-season HBP record (19), which had stood since 2011. Shipley has now been plunked 52 times in his career and is likely to break Kyle Wood’s alltime program record (55) this season. • Purdue entered the opening weekend of Big Ten play leading the league in runs scored (135) but has since slipped to four (239). Along with hit by pitch, the Boilermakers also currently lead the conference sacrifice bunts (44), sacrifice flies (26) and opposing base stealers thrown out (24). Purdue is also second in doubles (80) but has had the most base runners erased in the conference via caught stealings (22). By contrast, The Boilermakers did go 11-for-12 in stolen base attempts in the Illinois series. LEARNARD LIGHTS OUT IN RELIEF • Ross Learnard has been Purdue’s most consistent performer entering the weekend, emerging as one of the top relievers in the Big Ten this season. He has pitched 26 consecutive scoreless innings over his last 17 relief appearances and allowed a run in only one of his 19 appearances (game 3 at SEMO on a steal of home) total this season. He has the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak by a Boilermaker since at least the start of the 2005 campaign. • Learnard has also excelled at stranding inherited base runners, allowing only 4 of 19 to score this year. In the series-opening win at Rutgers, he entered the game with the bases loaded, no outs and Purdue leading by three. He allowed two inherited runners to score via sacrifice flies, but did not allow the tying run to advance past first base. Learnard is the primary reason the Purdue bullpen has stranded 45 of 68 (66 percent) inherited runners. • Opposing hitters are 6-for-35 (.171) against Learnard with two outs this season. In his six appearances at home, the lefty has retired 26 of the 33 batters he has faced. • Opposing hitters are just 4-for-34 (.118) vs. fellow reliver Dalton Parker with two outs. The freshman has allowed only one of nine inherited runners to score. He has a two wins and five saves in his 10 appearances this season.

PARKER TIES PURDUE’S FRESHMAN SAVES RECORD • Dalton Parker worked 7 2/3 innings of three-run relief over two appearances last week. After coming up one out shy of closing out the 12-inning loss to Ball State on April 18, the Central Illinois native was able to finish off the Fighting Illini in Friday’s series opener. The four-inning save was his fifth of the season, matching a Purdue freshman record that has stood since 1993 (Doug Kelly). • Parker has worked a combined 13 innings in his five appearances in which he has been credited with a save. Friday’s game was the first time he gave up a run while earning a save. Only one of those five outings was a one-inning (modern closer) appearance. Meanwhile, the four-inning appearance Friday was his longest since working five innings of one-hit ball in the Feb. 18 win at Texas State. HOMESTANDS OF AT LEAST EIGHT GAMES SINCE 1990 • Purdue is currently in the midst of its first 10-game homestand since 1995. The Boilermakers are scheduled to play at home for four consecutive weekend for the first time since 1996. 2017 – 10-Game // April 21 to May 7 // 4-0 Record thru 4 Games 2011 – 8-Game // May 11 to 21 // 6-2 Record 2008 – 9-Game // March 22 to 30 // 8-1 Record 1997 – 9-Game // April 25 to May 3 // 8-1 Record 1996 – 9-Game // March 29 to April 7 // 4-5 Record 1995 – 10-Game // April 8 to 18 // 7-3 Record 1990 – 10-Game // April 27 to May 10 // 3-6-1 Record 1990 – 12-Game // March 17 to April 1 // 8-4 Record HUNTER HITS SAFELY IN EVERY GAME OF ANOTHER SERIES • Skyler Hunter has hit safely in every game of a series a team-high five times this season. He accomplished the feat against Texas State, Cal State Northridge, Santa Clara, Rutgers and Illinois. The first three weekends he did it were all four-game series. Hunter broke up John O’Reilly’s no-hit bid with a two-out single in the seventh inning of the April 16 series finale at Rutgers. He has reached base safely in 30 of the last 31 games dating back to March 10. Evan Warden and Hunter reached base safely in each of the first 13 games of Big Ten play and Hunter will enter the Northwestern series riding a 15-game streak in league play. • Bryce Bonner also hit safely in all three games in Piscataway. The freshman has started 17 straight games, making five starts at designated hitter during that stretch. He has 12 doubles in his last 83 at-bats dating back to March 12 and leads the team in slugging percentage (.409) for the season.

RECORD CROWDS AT ALEXANDER FOR INDIANA SERIES • The Boilermakers finally had an opportunity to host rival Indiana at Alexander Field and the fans showed up in a big way for Purdue’s first home weekend of the season. The weekend attendance total was 5,645 after the Saturday (2,312) and Sunday (2,035) games produced the two largest crowds in program history. • The Boilermakers hosted IU for the first time since April 2011. They won their fifth straight series against their rivals dating back to 2004. Dating back to the 2008 Big Ten Tournament, Purdue has won 11 of the last 14 meetings in the rivalry series played outside of Bloomington. • After playing each of its first seven weekends on the road, Purdue will be at home a lot the rest of the season. With the Rutgers road trip in the books, Purdue doesn’t leave the state of Indiana again until a May 17 flight to the Twin Cities for a series at Minnesota to close the regular season. Beginning with the Illinois series (April 21-23), the Boilermakers were scheduled to play 13 of 14 at Alexander Field. • Purdue’s 16 true road wins are the most in the Big Ten and more than the program had in the last two seasons combined (10). Minnesota (13), Indiana (12), Rutgers (11) and Michigan State (10) are the only other Big Ten teams to have reached double figures in true road wins. • The Boilermakers have won road series at Southeast Missouri, Santa Clara and Ohio State this year. The 2012 season (4) marked the last time Purdue won three true road series. The Boilermakers had only won three true road series total in the four years since. At OSU, Purdue rallied to win a series after losing the opening game for only the third time since the start of the 2010 season.

20-GAME STREAKS SNAPPED FOR HUNTER, DALESANDRO • Skyler Hunter’s 21-game reached base safely streak was snapped in the April 11 loss at No. 2 Louisville. It was just one shy of Nick Dalesandro’s 22-game run that ended April 2 at Ohio State. Dalesandro reached base safely in every game of March. Hunter had reached base safely in every game since the start of the spring break strip. The 2011 season was the last time Purdue had multiple players with a 20-game reached base safely streaks. Cameron Perkins (50), David Miller (24) and Barrett Serrato (21) each accomplished the feat that season. Evan Warden’s 19-game reached safely streak from March 22 to April 21 nearly gave the Boilermakers three such 20-game streaks again this year. • Hunter compiled a .414 on-base percentage during his 21-game reached safely streak. For the season, the freshman is batting .353 with runners in scoring position. More impressively, with a runner on third and less than two outs, he has driven in that run in 15 of his 20 opportunities. He drove in the go-ahead run in five of Purdue’s 10 wins from March 13 to April 2. He also scored the game-winning run in the March 28 walk-off victory vs. Kent State. • Dalesandro reached base safely in 22 consecutive games from Feb. 24 to April 1. His streak was the longest among active Boilermakers and the first 20-game single-season run by a Purdue player since Kyle Wood (24) in 2014. Dalesandro batted .395 (34-for-86) with a .448 OBP, eight extra-base hits and 19 RBI during his streak. • Jacson McGowan drove in a run in all four games during Purdue’s home week vs. Indiana State and Indiana (April 3-9), homering twice in the Indiana series and finishing the week 6-for-13 with two walks and six RBI. McGowan has been equally productive with a runner on third and less than two outs, plating that runner in 11 of his 15 chances. BIG MONTH IN MARCH • The Boilermakers won 10 games in March, a win total they’ve now matched in April, posting a double-figure total in a month for the first time since May 2012 (10-5). Purdue will now look to carry over its winning ways to Alexander Field. After the series vs. Illinois, Purdue is just 32-55 at home since Alexander opened in 2013. The program’s most home wins was eight (8-12) in 2015 and best winning percentage was .438 (7-9) in 2014. The Boilermakers have won just five of their 20 home weekend series at Alexander.
