Waste rally to go ahead Kevin Cheng

A PUBLIC rally will be held at St Marys Memorial Hall on June 13 to protest against any waste from Hunters Hill going to a SITA waste facility at Kemps Creek. Lindsay federal Labor MP David Bradbury has person-

LINDSAY MP DAVID BRADBURY PAYS TO HIRE HALL FOR RALLY ally provided the $400 needed to hire the hall. “This rally will allow local residents to have their say on the NSW Liberals’ plan to dump thousands of tonnes of radioactive waste at

Kemps Creek,” Mr Bradbury said. “It was disappointing to see Penrith Council turn down the opportunity to fund a rally on this important issue.”

Western Sydney Residents Against Radioactive Dumping spokeswoman and Penrith councillor Prue Car said the rally would be a chance for residents to voice their opinion.

“We think this is one of the biggest issues facing our community at this time,” she said. In March, Penrith councillors rejected a proposal raised by Cr Car for the

council to fund the rally, citing concerns about its potential cost. She said the action group had written to Premier Barry O’Farrell and state Liberal MPs to attend the rally, to be held from 6.30-8.30pm. Email RadioactiveWaste [email protected] to attend.

Restaurateurs to turn old toilet block into riverside cafe Kevin Cheng

WHAT’S IN STORE

RESTAURANT partners Ross Dobson and Jane Jeffrey will transform an unused toilet block overlooking the Nepean River at Emu Plains into a cafe. The pair, who operate Spanish restaurant The Union in Penrith and Cafe At Lewers at Penrith Regional Gallery, stumbled across the building when they went for a walk along the river to find ideas for a new eatery. Mr Dobson said there was a demand for a cafe on the western side of the Nepean River. “The river has always been so popular,’’ Mr Dobson said. “Jane and I have been talking about the idea of doing something down there by the river and we’ve seen the success of The Coffee Club and CafeAt Lewers and realised there was a need. “We approached Penrith Council and they said they’d never thought about it before, and that it was really good idea.” What prompted the pair to look for a riverside site was the proposed pedestrian bridge. The 75sq m building, at Regatta Park, was built as a

State office sale Finance Minister Greg Pearce has defended the sale of seven State Government-owned buildings, including one in Penrith. Australian-based company Cromwell will lease the office space back to the government for the next 15 years. Mr Pearce said the sales had unlocked $405 million. “That funding will go to sewerage, road works, water facilities (and) electricity works to enable us to continue to accelerate housing construction and to meet the infrastructure decline in NSW,” he said.

toilet block but is now used by the council for storage. Mr Dobson said the proposed cafe would have unobstructed views of the river. The focus of the new cafe would be on environmental sustainability and the name would be centred on the Nepean River. “Maybe we will install a water tank and offer free rainwater for people,” Mr Dobson said. “There will be an area for people to put their bikes and dogs as well. “Our concept will be focused on local businesses and sourcing local products and ingredients.”

No questions Western Sydney Conservation Alliance president Geoff Brown has accused Planning Minister Brad Hazzard of leaving a forum in Penrith last week before residents could talk to him. The forum was about the State Government’s new White Paper on planning. Mr Brown said Mr Hazzard left the room after being approached by him.
