MEASURING UP: AM I GRACE-FILLED? January 29, 2017 Ephesians 2:1-10 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Welcome to Southern Hills United Methodist Church! We are so glad that you have chosen to worship with us today. Before you leave, please take a few minutes to stop by our Welcome Center located just outside the worship center in the Narthex. Stages of Grace   

A Warm Welcome

Prevenient Grace Saving Grace Sanctifying Grace

God’s Grace, Freely Given But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved… Ephesians 2:4-5 1. God’s Forgiving Love 2. God’s Accepting Love 3. God’s Empowering Love

Deaths We express our sympathy to Diana Davin and family following the death of her mother.

AUTOMATIC DOORS INSTALLED

But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God… John 1:12 You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus; and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. 2 Timothy 2:1-2

“MEASURING UP” January 29: “Measuring Up: Am I Grace-Filled?” Ephesians 2:1-10 We still need volunteers for referees, scoreboard and concessions. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Brian Cathey at [email protected], or call the church at 277-6176. The Upward program gives Southern Hills the opportunity to open our doors to the community not only to be involved in a sports program, but even more importantly to share the gospel of Christ! We need you! You can volunteer for one week, the whole season, or simply for a couple of hours. Join us!

GUATEMALA MISSION TRIP 2017 This year a team from Southern Hills will again be traveling to Guatemala in July to share Christ’s love by building houses, building stoves, distributing water filters, leading VBS, etc. If you are interested in joining us this year, please plan on attending an informational meeting in the Library between the two services at 10:40 a.m. on January 29th. Contact Teddy Poore or Brian Cathey for more information at (859) 421-6804.

HOUSES FOR GUATEMALA FUNDRAISING DINNER Help us build houses in Guatemala aby attending this fundraiser at the Signature Club on March 11. This event will be catered by P.F. Changs and will include both a live and silent auction. Entertainment provided by Will Solomon and Jeremy Arnold. Cost is $65.00. To purchase tickets go to: [email protected].

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLEAN-UP RELIEF WORK This past summer, Hurricane Matthew caused major damage to parts of North Carolina. Bishop Leonard Fairley, our Kentucky United Methodist bishop, is eager for the Kentucky UMC to respond by sending a team of volunteers to help with the clean-up. The destination is Lumberton, NC and the team will be housed at Chestnut Street United Methodist Church. No experience is necessary, just a desire to be a part of assisting others in getting their lives back in order. The dates set for this trip are March 25-31. The cost is $350, with a $100 deposit due by February 15th. For more information, please contact Stu Johnson, or Team Leader, Pastor Randy Maynard, from Christ Church (859-221-2409); [email protected]. In addition, you can find all of the information on the Kentucky United Methodist Conference website kyumc.org. Please come and be part of this exciting opportunity of service.

Just a bit about your bite. You may know that several studies point to correlations between your dental health and your heart (and circulatory health). Whether dental/gum diseases are causative may not be so clear, but it certainly appears prudent to take good care of our teeth. This includes brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist. And of course, reducing the input of sodas and other sugary drinks will likely product health benefits beyond the teeth.

FAMILY WORSHIP BOXES: Be on the lookout for a change to our Worship Boxes that we use on Sunday mornings. Now there will be a variety of ways to help you keep your children engaged in worship. You'll notice that Sermon Notes For Kids will be on a clipboard. If your child fills this out and sees me or Shawnne after worship, we will give them a small treat...think a sticker or a piece of gum. They'll also get Busy Bags. When children's hands are engaged, science tells us their brains are too. Even if it looks like they aren't paying attention if they are focused on something else with their hands, they are absorbing more than we can imagine. Please return clipboards, zipper bags and supplies back to the cart. Take home any coloring pages. TIPS FOR FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP: This month during Family Worship, practice repeating the sermon quietly in your child's ear while they are on your lap. Use words that are age appropriate if words are difficult to explain.

Middle School Small Group: Wednesdays, February 1, 8, 15 & 22. We will meet in the Great Room from 6:30-7:30pm. We’ll dig into the Bible to better understand who God is and how we relate to Him in a series called Grapple. High School Small Group: Join us on Mondays, February 6, 13 & 27 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. as we have a meal together, share about how things are going, and do a deep dive into the Bible and tough topics to see how our faith informs us on them. We meet at Maggie’s house (4216 Nutmeg Dr., Lexington, KY 40513). Youth Band: Wednesdays, February 1, 8, 15 & 22. We will meet in the Great Room from 7:30-8:30pm to practice songs to lead worship at Snapshot. Snapshot: Sundays, February 5, 12 & 26. We will look at some stories of failure in the Bible and see what we can learnfrom them. We all fall short some time, but we can use failures to learn and grow. We don’t need to live in fear and be paralyzed by the possibility of failing. Confirmation: Sunday, February 5, meet at 12:00 p.m. in the café by the gym for lunch, and then we’ll start session 2 talking about the Holy Spirit, the church and new creation. If you haven’t joined us and still want to, contact Brian. We can catch you up.

BELIEVER BUTTONS: Be on the look out for information about how SHKids is going to partner with you while you disciple your children at home by using Believer Buttons! SAFE SANCTUARY TRAINING: If you are new to volunteering or have been a volunteer a long time, it's time for our Annual Safe Sanctuary Training. Join us Feb 11th at 10 am! If you've completed the online training since June 2016, then you don't need to attend this training.

COLLEGE SKI TRIP FEBRUARY 24-26, 2017

LUNCH WITH SHKIDS: Be on the lookout for emails from Kristina about having lunch with your child. She's trying to schedule those on Wednesdays!

Join us as we hit the slopes at the Winterplace Ski Resort near Beckley, WV. All college age young adults are welcome. Contact Teddy Moore or Tamila Brode for more details at (859) 421-6804.
