“Black Voices, Black Hearts” Wednesday evenings, March 8, 15, 22, 29 & April 5 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. ~ Parish Hall Christ Church is partnering with members of Roanoke’s Black community to present this series of vignettes as a celebration of Lent and an opportunity for community dialogue on race in Roanoke. Discussions will focus on the black experience, perspective, and history in the Star City. Speakers will share their experience and thoughts about “What it is like being black in Roanoke”. Simple dinner (soup & salad) served at 6:00; Q & A following each presentation.
WEEK ONE (March 8): Fletcher Nichols, Head of the Fine Arts Department of Patrick Henry High School. Focus: Being black in Roanoke from the perspective of a teacher, mentor, minister, and father of black students—what I’ve learned from them and their experiences—what I believe we have to do to help them and our community
WEEK TWO (March 15): Claudia Alexander Whitworth, Publisher of Roanoke Tribune. Focus: Black history in Roanoke as it was lived and witnessed by Claudia and the Tribune—Urban Renewal, Segregation, and the possibility of Racial Reconciliation & Unity—what has to happen.
WEEK THREE (March 22): Khalid Jones, Owner VIP Bistro (Downtown), Clean Cuts, and Founder & CEO of Community Cultivators, Inc. Focus: Living endangered in the Star City, building business and defying stereotypes.
WEEK FOUR (March 29): S.T.E.P. Students of Patrick Henry High School — a mentoring & development program/class for black male students. FOCUS: Roanoke life—black, young, and getting an education.
WEEK FIVE (April 5): S.T.E.P. Students of Patrick Henry High School — a development program/class for young black male students. Focus: group discussion as the community looks on—students tackle a variety of issues from their African American perspective.
