What is Animal Science?

ANIMAL SCIENCE

Possible Career Paths

Students  of  animal  sciences  know  where  your  food  comes  from.   They  learn  how  to  make  sure  that  the  na7on’s  supply  of  cows,   chickens,  pigs,  and  other  food  animals  is  as  healthy  and   produc7ve  as  possible.  Among  the  challenges  of  animal  science:   discovering  which  breeds  of  cow  produce  the  best  milk  and   coming  up  with  new  ways  to  protect  against  bovine   spongiform  encephalopathy,  or  Mad  Cow  Disease.

study  farm  crops  and  animals  to  improve  their   quality  and  yield.

Aquaculturist

raise  fish  and  shellfish  for  commercial   purposes,  such  as  food  and  recrea7onal  fishing  

Dairy Farmer

breed,  care  for,  and  milk  dairy  cows,  process   the  milk  for  drinking  or  for  use  in  other  dairy   products.  

Pig and Poultry Farmer

raise  pigs  or  chickens  and  other  fowl  for   maximum  health  and  yield,  making  sure  they   meet  health  regula7ons.  

Rancher

raise  caHle  for  beef,  sheep  for  wool  and  meat,   and  other  hoofed  animals.  

Jobs in the Military Life Scientist

conducts  studies  of  human  and  animal  diseases  to   understand  their  causes  and  to  find  treatments.   Harmful  pests  and  bacteria  are  studied  to  find  ways   to  protect  people  and  food  against  illness  or   infec7on.

Veterinarian

prevent,  diagnose,  and  treat  illness  in  small   animals  (such  as  cats  and  dogs),  large  animals   (such  as  horses  and  cows),  or  both.
