Annual Leave What is Annual Leave? Annual Leave is authorized time off granted to UNICEF staff members holding permanent, fixed term, continuing and temporary appointments. The purpose of this entitlement is to allow staff paid time away from work for rest, recreation, and personal matters. The days are accrued on a monthly basis, and can be carried forward during an annual attendance cycle. The attendance cycle runs from 1 April through the following 31 March. Staff members with temporary appointments accrue 1.5 days of annual leave per month, and can only accrue a maximum of 18 days during a one year period. Staff members with fixed-term, continuing, or permanent appointments accrue 2.5 days of annual leave per month. They can carry forward no more than 60 days from one attendance cycle to the next. -
For example, if a staff member on a fixed-term appointment has a balance of 68 days as of 31 March ; on 1 April his/her balance will be reduced to 60 days and the excess of 8 days will be forfeited.
How do I use my accrued Annual Leave? Annual Leave may be taken in units of days or half days. Staff members should discuss annual leave plans with their supervisors in advance so that teams can arrange for adequate coverage during absences. Before the leave is taken, staff members should submit annual leave requests electronically through the Employee Self Service (ESS) portal. In this portal, staff members will also be able to check their annual leave balances and review their attendance records. What if I need to take time off from work and I do not have enough days of Annual Leave accrued? In exceptional circumstances, a staff member may be granted advanced annual leave of up to two (2) weeks or ten (10) working days. Such an advance can only be approved if the staff member has enough time remaining on his/her contract to accrue an equivalent number of leave days.
What happens to any accrued annual leave days I may have when I separate from UNICEF? At the time of separation, staff members will be paid for any unused annual leave days. Staff on temporary appointment can be paid a maximum of 18 annual leave days, and staff on fixed-term, continuing, or permanent appointment can be paid a maximum of 60 days in total.
