WINTER 2013 NEWSLETTER
As I see it! We live on a small planet with a big population. There are 7 billion people living on Ear th today and by the end of this century that number is likely to double. I wholeheartedly support the belief that Canada will be the richest country in the world by the year 2100. I realize that’s quite a statement but allow me to back it up and explain what I think it means to us in 2013.
Global warming is upon us. There is no question the climate is changing. Last year NASA declared that due to ‘unprecedented warming at a pace faster than at any time in 10,000 years...much of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba is predicted to see major shifts northward of plant and animal species.’ No longer will the harsh climate of Canada be regarded as unwelcoming for humans or inhospitable for farming. The northern parts of Ontario and Quebec will open up as well. This country will see enormous change in this century.
We have the second largest land mass in the world and yet our population is relatively miniscule (currently 36th worldwide at 33 million). That HAS to change.
70% of this planet consists of water, less than 3% of that water is fresh and a large part of that fresh water supply is right here in Canada.
We all know that this country has been blessed with riches that exist under the soil: oil, gas, copper, nickel, gold, iron ore, potash, etc. We possess a long list of natural resources that are essential to the growth and prosperity of global economies and which will be in great demand.
We can live in this country secure in the knowledge that we are insulated geographically from most if not all of the world’s trouble spots. It doesn’t hurt that we also happen to be the closest neighbour, staunchest ally and the #1 trading partner of the great USA.
Our system of democracy as well as our financial and legal systems are the envy of the G8 let alone the rest of the world.
phosis. We will become the worldwide ‘city of choice’ as our population booms and our economy grows and thrives. I believe that Toronto will be regarded as the number ONE city in the world in which to live and work within fifty years. Not Paris, not New York, not London, Sydney or Beijing. TORONTO! And my point is? Buy any property you can in the 416 area code, live happily ever after and prosper. If you can buy an additional property, do it. Lease it, leverage it and buy another. I don’t think you can go wrong and I can’t think of anything that will convince me otherwise. The amount of money pouring into Toronto real estate from the far east, mid-east and eastern Europe is staggering. From my perspective its money that is being parked. Real estate investment in Toronto is fast becoming a ‘flight to safety’. The security of our banking system and stability of our currency is the big draw as economies around the world reel with uncertainty. This is why we all should be investing for the long term in Toronto real estate. Allow me go a little further. Take a good hard look at rural properties within 100 km of the CN tower. A lot of other people are. From Port Hope to Guelph and up to Barrie, more and more of my clients are thinking ahead and thinking ‘country’, i.e. keeping a condo in the city and a house in the country. Getting in and out of this city without a car has never been easier. The lifestyle (and the prices) are causing people to notice. Something to think about. I am very well connected with Kim Spencer in Northumberland, Jim Hartford and Lynn Stein in Prince Edward County and Suzanne Martineau and Heather Scott in Muskoka. If you want, give me a call and I’ll give you their contact info. That’s all folks!
Our standard of living is second to none. SECOND TO NONE! And that won’t change. We’re sitting pretty! In short, the whole world wants to live in this country and that trend will continue exponentially over the next several decades. What we will be able to offer to the rest of the world will be unmatched by any other nation and we must be ready for it. So what does all this mean to you and me and where am I going with this? Simple, Toronto will be at the epicentre of this enormous Canadian demographic metamor-
