VOLUME VII NUMBER 4

AUGUST 2006

COMMISSIONER’S CORNER...... I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the 60+ members who attended the July 20 mid-season meeting. Your ideas, suggestions and overall comments for improving the League are appreciated. Board members held a follow-up meeting on Wednesday, July 26th, in order to address many of the concerns raised by members. The following is a summary of actions taken by the Board: 1. New Softballs. Once the current supply of softballs has been depleted we will insert a better quality, yellow softball—375 Compression, 44 CORE—Worth, Gold Dot. Plans are in place to have these softballs available for the playoffs and Cape Cod Classic Tournament. 2. Nomination Committee. Currently is being formed to develop a slate of candidates for our annual elections to be held in October. Any player who is interested in serving on this committee should contact Rocco Annesi, Coordinator, (420-1099). Also League members who are interested in serving on the Board of Directors for a two-year term should contact Van (432-4153) with your intentions ASAP. The following positions are due to expire in October 2006: American Conference President Thomas Radziewicz (seeks reelection) Ray Beaupre Director At Large (seeks reelection) James DeVoe Director At Large (seeks reelection) Thomas Burke Director At Large (open seat) NOTE: If you intend to be a candidate for any of these expired positions, you cannot be on the Nominating Committee. 3. Annual League Golf Tournament: Jack Kelleher, Chair Invitations for the scheduled Sept. 25th(Monday), 10th Annual Golf Tournament went out shortly after July 1st, but based on returns we suspect some of our golfers may not have received one. We have reserved 60 Tee times at Cranberry Valley for that day but as of this bulletin have only received 30 reservations. One week after the date of this newsletter we will close entries to the tournament. For more information about how to sign up contact: Division 1- Phil Cunningham 508-888 5122 Division 2- Jim Van Balen 508-896-9048 Division 3- Ed Gorrigan 508-945-4498 Division 4- Jack Kelleher 508-945-8341 4. Annual Banquet: Mark Your Calendars! The Cape Old Timers’ Softball League Annual Banquet will be held on Friday, September 22. We will return to Christopher’s Restaurant, Route 28, South Yarmouth, the site of last year’s very successful and extremely enjoyable banquet. Cocktails will be served beginning at 5PM with dinner to follow at 6:15PM. Those

who attended last year will remember the magnificent hors d/oeuvres table which, of course, will be repeated this year. Since this year’s banquet is being held more than a month earlier than last year, the expectation is that more folks will be able to attend. Seating capacity at Christopher’s is limited to 280 so tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tickets, costing $30.00 a person, will be available form your Team Manager beginning the first week of August. Tickets must be purchased no later than September 8, 2006. 5. League Website News. All Managers are reminded that new accelerated rules for reporting game results are now in effect. Winning Team Managers MUST report the results of weekday afternoon games no later than 10PM and weekend morning game results no later than 3PM. Your cooperation is necessary in order for the standings to be updated on a timely basis. Managers who do not have Internet access should assign this task to another team member. The reporting procedure is very simple Log on to the League website at www.capeoldtimerssoftball.com Click on GAME REPORTING and furnish the information requested Click on REPORT THIS GAME. If you encounter any problems contact Dave Janick at [email protected] or call 508-430-4396. 6. COTSL Fantasy Football. The 13th Annual Fantasy Football League season was completed in January 2006. The big winners were Peter Strand, Manager of Ben & Jerry’s and Chick Hamel, of Real Estate Co. (formerly Ryan’s Tavern). The Football League consists of 2 divisions, each with 10 participants. The so-called NFL experts are active and retired players in COTSL. When the football season approaches, we usually have to fill one or two vacancies. If you are interested in this fun League or would like information on the operation of the Fantasy Football League, please contact Dick Carroll (508-362-9128) or the Fantasy Football League Coordinator, Stan Russell at [email protected].

7. Special League Award. A special award will be presented at our annual banquet, September 22nd, to a player who exemplifies good sportsmanship, outstanding character, community/League service and other qualities that the League embraces. Jim DeVoe, Award Chairman, and his committee members are in the process of selecting a candidate for this award which will be submitted to the Board for approval. 8. Cape Cod Classic Tournament. Dick Connolly, tournament director, has mailed out informational packets to team managers throughout New England and other regions and states. In order to continue our efforts to make this event a first class operation, we will again need a large cadre of volunteers who can assist Dick in a variety of task: food concession, hosting, parking, umpiring, scorekeepers, field coordinators/maintenance, etc. during the six day event— September 8-9-10-11-12-13. Please…lend a hand!! Call Dick (508-760-1410)

9. Help Needed!! Cape Cod Classic Tournament Merchandise Vivian Lindo (Red Balloon) is in urgent need for players, wives, friends, etc., to assist with the sale of classic Tournament merchandise (hats, shirts) during the six-day event. If you can volunteer and/or get your wives to help with this activity—even for an hour or so each day —please contact Vivian (508-790-2325-cell phone). 10. League Audit. At the July 20th mid-season meeting, a member raised several questions with regard to the League audit. As a result of the many questions, Board members invited the League’s auditor to its meeting on July 26th in order to revisit his audit report and to clarify those points raised. Finally, the Board has decided to insert the auditors’ report in this edition of the newsletter as a form of information to its membership.:

11. Revision of Runner Rule. Division 4 ONLY. During the mid-season meeting, several members expressed their feelings concerning the current “runner rule” used in Division 4. Board members devoted a fair amount of time discussing this matter and have again revised the rule in order to address the many issues raised. Effective July 28th, 2006 the revised “Runner Rule” policy for Division 4 ONLY is as follows:

12.Thank you. A very special acknowledgment and thanks from the Commissioner, the Board of Directors and League members to: Paul Neilsen (Grumpy’s) for his weekly maintenance of Potter and Memorial fields; Tom Daranco (Grumpy’s) for his individual efforts and repairs made to the Pressbox at Ezra Baker Field; Xavier McDonnell (Ferretti’s Market) paint contractor, who has volunteered to power wash and paint the Pressbox Fenway Park Green/white trim. Three outstanding League members who “stepped to the plate” to help the League when the call was made!!

12. Continued Thanks!! On July 21-22, a new batters box was installed at Memorial Field by the following volunteers: Mike Hanafee (Chatham Squires); Tom O’Rourke (W2Group); Mike Sullivan (Bonatt’s); Tony Fucci (Aggregate Industries); Bill Prodgers (Realty Execs); Van (Grumpy’s) AND “Head Boss” Tom Burke (W2Group). Over 35 bags of cement were mixed in wheelbarrows and poured into the frame. A green turf material was glued/nailed to the entire batters box. Initial use and general comments offered by teams who played at Memorial Field with the newly installed batters box were most positive, with expressions of appreciation and thanks to those who provided their time and labor for a job well done. Plans are being made to install a similar batters box at Ezra Baker Field sometime in the future. 13. Mark Your Calendars. The General League Business meeting is scheduled for Thursday.
