TEAM NOTES

Trent Taylor has finished in the top 10 in receptions per game and receiving yards per game each of the last two seasons. - He is one of only two C-USA wide receivers returning who have both done so (Zach Pascal of ODU); Carlos Henderson has finished in the top 10 in all-purpose yards each of the last two seasons - He is the only C-USA player returning who has done so

QUICK HITS

VERSUS THE SEC

Since 2000, the Bulldogs have faced an SEC school every year except three (2002, 2006 and 2013). LA Tech has not faced Arkansas since 1997. Since the last time LA Tech played Arkansas, the Bulldogs have played every other SEC West team at least twice.

SEASON OPENERS

The Bulldogs have won only one season opener on the road in the last 20 years (Sept. 8, 2012 at Houston). Their record is 1-8 in such games.

LOUISIANA TECH AMONG LEAST EXPERIENCED TEAMS IN FBS

According to Phil Steele, Louisiana Tech opens the campaign ranked 123rd out of 129 FBS teams in terms of experience heading into the 2016 season, which is no surprise considering the Bulldogs lost 13 starters (5 offense, 8 defense) from last year’s team. Here’s a look at how the rest of LA Tech’s 2016 opponents ranks in terms of experience returning:

Senior WR Trent Taylor is ranked in the Top 10 in school history in both career reception (7th), yards (10th) and touchdowns (T-6th)

HOLTZ’S RETURN TO FAYETTEVILLE HIGHLIGHTS SEASON OPENER

LA Tech head football coach Skip Holtz spent his teenage years as a prep quarterback for the Fayetteville High School Purple Pride from 1979-82 while his father, Lou, was the head coach at the University of Arkansas. Coincidentally, Lou Holtz (who coached the Razorbacks from 1977-83) is being inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor this weekend while his son, Skip, leads the Bulldogs on the field to open the 2016 season.

LA TECH LEADS C-USA WITH 17 PLAYERS IN NFL TRAINING CAMPS

An impressive 17 different Bulldogs (most in C-USA) are working on making a name for themselves on the professional level with those former LA Tech players currently in NFL Training Camps. In addition to the three players drafted last season (Vernon Butler-CAR, Kenneth Dixon-BAL, Jeff Driskel-SF), the following players are also impressing in the pros: Luke McCown-NO, Mitchell Bell-OAK, Jordan Mills-BUF, Houston Bates-WAS, Vontarrius Dora-DEN, Justin Ellis-OAK, IK Enemkpali-BUF, Ryan Allen-NE, Quinton Patton-SF, Paul Turner-PHI, Myles WhiteNYG, Adairius Barnes-DET, Kentrell Brice-GB, Tramon Williams-CLE Redshirt freshman J’Mar Smith is set to start at QB at Arkansas, marking the first time a freshman QB has started at Tech since Ryan Higgins in 2013

THE LAST TIME...1997

On Sept. 27, 1997, Louisiana Tech and Arkansas met in the middle at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock to face off with the Bulldogs sporting a perfect 3-0 record heading into the matchup. Led by quarterback Tim Rattay (now QB coach at LA Tech), the Bulldogs found themselves in an early deficit, down 14-0 after the first quarter of play, but a pair of field goals by Marty Kent in the second quarter cut the Arkansas lead to eight heading into half. A scoreless third quarter set up a thrilling end for the Bulldogs and Razorbacks in the fourth. LA Tech began the quarter with a touchdown pass from Rattay to Josh Bradley to cap off a 13-play, 92-yard scoring drive and make it just a 14-13 deficit for the Bulldogs with over 14 minutes remaining in the game. But Arkansas responded with an 11-play, 45-yard drive of their own to give the Razorbacks TIM RATTAY a 17-13 lead thanks to a 47-yard field goal with 12:37 LA Tech QB (1997-99) remaining in regulation. Current QB Coach From there, Arkansas held off the Bulldogs’ passing attack to clinch the victory as both teams moved to 3-1 on the season. The Bulldogs finished the 1997 season with a 9-2 overall record and won six of their next seven games following the 17-13 loss against Arkansas.
