THE SERIES: Camden leads, 27-20. NJCU has won last four meetings and five of the last six. LAST MEETING: January 16, 2010 in Camden, NJ. NJCU won, 7771. The Knights never trailed in the game and led by as many as 18 points. LAST TIME OUT: On Monday, NJCU won its first game at home this season (1-7) and improved to 4-3 overall against members of the CUNYAC conference, by cruising to a 72-54 win over York (NY). Maria Suarez notched her third 20-point effort and fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Transfer Gabrielle Rivera poured in a career-best 16 points. WHITED OUT: Wednesday’s game against Montclair State will be made up on Valentine’s Day (Monday, February 14) at 6 p.m. NJCU then travels to MSU on February 16. GREEN and GOLD DAYS JINX: Today is the culmination of the eighth annual ‘Green and Gold Days’ week at NJCU. The women’s basketball team is 0-7 alltime during a Green and Gold Days game; the men haven’t fared much better—just 2-5 since the event debuted in 2004. CARMONA IMPRESSING: Nidia Carmona currently ranks third in the NJAC in assists per game (3.6) and is sixth in steals (2.6). She has led NJCU in assists in 10 games this season and has dished five or more assists in six games this season. She also has swiped at least five steals in four different games. GARCIA UPDATE: Carolina Garcia, who is second in the league in minutes per game (34.9), enters the game in 10th place in program history in scoring with 847 points. In ninth place is Donna Scerra who scored 887 points in 72 games from 1981-84. The top eight players in school history all scored 1000 points.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION SCARLET POINTS: Camden has struggled to find points this season and has not reached the 50-point threshold in 11 of 19 games. The Raptors are 10th in the league in scoring offense with an average of 48.1 per contest. Its season high is 66 in a win at City College of New York. With NJCU ranking ninth in the league in scoring (51.6), this could be a low-scoring affair, especially when you consider that the Raptors also rank fourth in scoring defense—allowing just 54.5 points per game. GAME TURNER: Brittany Turner is the player to watch for the Raptors. At 15.2 points per game she ranks third in the league in scoring and leads the conference in minutes per game (35.8). Her minutes are important because she has accounted for nearly 32 percent of Camden’s scoring this year. ROOKIE WATCH: Camden’s 6-foot-1 freshman Tina Croxton is a past NJAC Rookie of the Week and blocks 1.5 shots per game. ***THE NCAA, ECAC, NEW JERSEY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE AND NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY PROMOTE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP BY STUDENT-ATHLETES, COACHES, STAFF AND SPECTATORS. CARMONA
Sophomore | Point Guard Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth HS • Nunez Dates on Carmona: “She runs the floor well, doesn’t look to score but can if she has too, is the leader on the court and is probably our best defender. She is a true point guard and missing the last two seasons has only made her a better player.” • Tough road back: Carmona originally played for NJCU in 200809 before a knee injury six games into the season ended her rookie year. She was averaging 4.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 3.0 steals per game in a well-rounded effort. Her returned to the court was derailed in 2009-10 when she suffered another knee injury in the preseason but received a medical hardship waiver and has returned healthy as a sophomore team co-captain. • Academics: Majoring in Business Administration/Accounting. Would like a career in banking or a field related to accounting. • Academics: Played four years of varsity basketball at Elizabeth for coach Karen Pierre. Also played two years of varsity soccer. • Did You Know?: Her nickname is ‘Tati’. She was born in Cali, Colombia.
