A comprehensive, centralized, actively managed information clearinghouse that provides resources to support: Roadway departure safety  Strategic Highway Safety Plans 

“Our safety plans cannot be effective if we do not have tools to help us identify and understand the application of the latest research findings, countermeasures, and best practices.”

$50k funding provided by FHWA to “seed” the establishment of a clearinghouse:  Developed a detailed plan  Identified possible content and features  Recommended a framework and architecture



State Pooled Fund Project  Lead state  North Carolina DOT



Requested Commitment -- $15k for three years ($45,000 total)  Participation includes membership on steering

committee 

Contractors  Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) ○ System design, content development, quality assurance  American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) ○ Marketing, outreach, promotion, technical input

Provide strategies for addressing the three aspects of roadway departure: keep vehicles on road; provide opportunity to recover; minimize severity of crash

“One-stop shop” or “go-to place” for all information related to roadway departure/roadside safety Actively managed and maintained User friendly – easy to find & access information Interactive features
