Comfort Sermon Discussion Questions Week of October 1, 2017

Jesus is present even when we feel alone. Getting Started •

How do you like to spend your time when you are alone?

Discuss 1. Read Psalm 23 aloud. 2. Consider verse 4 specifically. Under what circumstances do you think David wrote this? Is it personal reflection of past experience, words of hope in facing a current crisis, or some other occasion? 3. What is the contrast described in v. 4? What times in David’s life might he have felt this most? (See 1 Samuel 19 and 2 Samuel 15). 4. Describe a time when you have felt you were in a dark valley, yet you could feel the presence of Jesus. 5. Do you find it easier to feel the presence of Jesus in good times or in hard times? Why do you think this is? 6. What specifically does David say he doesn’t fear? 7. What evil do you fear? Why should it not be feared? 8. What is the purpose of the rod and staff in v. 4? How would this tool be used in the care of sheep? 9. Look at the following verses: Judges 6:21; 2 Samuel 7:14; Ezekiel 20:37; Proverbs 29:15. In capable hands, what tasks is a rod/staff able to perform? How does Christ accomplish these things in your life? 10. Describe a time when you have found comfort in correction. Prayer Lord Jesus, you are the good shepherd. As we go through dark times in dark places, we know we are not alone. You experience our pains with us and stick with us every step of the way. We can rely on you to never leave us, to protect us from evil, and to guide us back to you. Other Sermon Resources go to parkchapel.org/worship/sermons
