Career Opportunities
Centenary College put five players in double figures to offset career highs from Alvernia sophomore Joanna Graber (Manalapan, N.J./Notre Dame) and freshman Lil Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) and earned a 74-71 victory in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at the Folkner Family Gymnasium. Centenary (9-5, 5-3 PAC) senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, Pa./South) scored on a layup with 89 seconds left to break a 68all tie, the 10th of the night, and the Cyclones made four free throws in the final minute to keep the Crusaders at bay. Snyder corralled the rebound on an Alvernia missed free throws with 16 seconds left and the Crusaders set up a play for a 3-point attempt from Allee Barnes (Blooming Glen, Pa./Pennridge) with seven ticks left, but the shot bounced into Roberts’ hands and she held on as time expired. Alvernia (5-12, 4-4 PAC), which laid a 108-80 thumping on Centenary 11 days ago, jumped out to a 10-point lead with just under eight minutes left in the first half. Graber and senior Jill Rosolie (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) led the way early for the Crusaders with nine points each and it was Rosolie’s layup at 7:48 that put the guests up 10, 30-20. Alvernia pushed its advantage back to nine points with 88 ticks left on the first-half clock after the Cyclones cut it to four, but
the hosts got a jumper from Ayana Way (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens), who ended the night with a team-high 20, and a layup from Laura Feigus (Colts Neck, N.J./ St. Rose) to pull within five at the break, 37-32. The Crusaders, who entered Monday night’s game with a 5-1 mark in games they lead at the break, saw the advantage evaporate in the opening four minutes of the second half. Roberts accounted for the first four points, all from the free throw line, and Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph’s by the Sea) scored on a layup to give the lead back to the Cyclones, 38-37. Alvernia freshman Alex Velazquez (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored two of her 14 to regain the lead and the score remained on the seesaw for a few possessions before Feigus hit a 3 to push the gap to four for the hosts, 45-41. Alvernia junior Michelle Lutzkanin (Hummelstown, Pa./ Lower Dauphin) knocked down her only 3 of the night to answer and Velazquez followed with two from the charity stripe to regain the lead. The Crusaders finished the night 25-for-36 from the line, marking the third time this season Alvernia has hoisted up 35 or more free throws and the most since taking 36 in a loss to Kean University in St. Thomas over the winter break. from Feigus and Way. Alvernia responded with a 6-0 run of its own to regain the lead and the spread stayed within a possession for most of the rest of the way. Alvernia senior Ashley Blevins (York, Pa./Central York) forged the fourth tie of the night at the 8:23 mark with the first of two free throws and the score was tied six more times over the next five-plus minutes, the last time on Way’s jumper which accounted for the 68-all knot. The hosts turned the ball over twice in the next 90 seconds, but Alvernia failed to forge ahead and Roberts nailed the pivotal bucket at 1:29. She followed with a free throw for a three-point edge, but Velazquez answered with two of her own. A single free throw from Roberts put the Cyclones up 72-70 with 36 seconds left, but Alvernia turned the ball over on its next possession, one of just 14 for the night, but a costly one at that. This time the maroon and gold sent Camuso to the line and she nailed both for a four-point lead. Rosolie hit the first of two from the free throw line and Snyder corralled the rebound, just her second of the night, to set up the final play, but the Crusaders were unable to force the extra period. Graber and Snyder finished with 20 and 10 respectively and were joined in double digits by Velazquez (14 points) and Rosolie (11). Roberts finished with 15 points despite shooting just 4-of-14 from the floor while Camuso and Feigus scored 12 apiece and Leah Murphy (Hamburg, N.Y./Mount Mercy Academy) added 11. Alvernia will return to action Thursday at Marywood as part of a 6:00 and 8:00 doubleheader looking to break a four-game losing skid. Crusader Chronicle
Charlie Hughes
Alvernia 93, Marywood 50
Making just his second career start, sophomore guard Charlie Hughes (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) quadrupled his previous career high scoring 24 points to lead Alvernia College to a 93-50 win over Marywood University Thursday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at Insalaco Arena. Hughes hit 5-of-9 shots from the floor including 4-of-6 from the 3-point arc and is the first Alvernia player to hit 10-for-10 from the free throw line since Ray Strickland did the same in a 73-67 win over Neumann College on January 17, 2004, in a game that was played at Temple’s Liacouras Center. Sophomore forward Nick Rivera (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) finished the night with his second straight double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. He was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor and has hit 14 straight counting his 8-for-8 night on Monday at Centenary. Alvernia (11-7, 8-1 PAC)

opened up some breathing room in the first half with an 11-2 run that built a 27-13 lead with 8:21 to go before the break. Junior forward Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./ Pottstown), who finished with 20, hit a 3 to start the run and Hughes capped it with a 3 and a pair of free throws. Marywood (6-11, 0-9 PAC) stopped it with two free throws, but Hughes hit another 3 and after four straight Pacer points, Hughes and Shawell went back-to-back from long range in a 14-0 run that spanned three minutes and left the Crusaders with a 44-18 lead. Shawell and junior David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham) scored in the middle of the run and Rivera closed it with a pair of layups. Marywood stopped the streak again with a free throw and an even exchange run out the half with Alvernia holding a 48-23 lead at the break. Senior Jill Rosolie (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Alvernia College hit a season-best 17-of-18 free throws in a 59-51 win at Marywood University Thursday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at Insalaco Arena. The win snaps a four-game losing skid for the Crusaders (612, 5-4 PAC) and keeps them one clear of the Pacers (11-6, 4-5 PAC) in conference play. Alvernia shot 44 percent from the floor (21-48), but missed all seven shots from long range and snapped a modest string of 30 straight games with a 3-point bucket. Rosolie hit just 4-of-12 from the floor, but was perfect on six free throws to reach 14. She was joined in double figures by sophomore Joanna Graber (Manalapan, N.J./Notre Dame) and freshman Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./
Blue Mountain) who both scored 13. McIntyre returned from a foot injury that kept her out for four games, all loses for the Crusaders. Marywood got a game-high 19 points from Caitlin Hadzimichalis (Harmony, N.J./Belvidere) and 13 from Stephanie Fusaro (Bala Cynwood, Pa./Harriton). Marywood scored the first five points of the game and pushed its first-half lead to as many as eight, 20-12, at the 8:18 mark. McIntyre answered that lead with a 3-point play and Alvernia ran off an 186 run to end the half and take a 30-26 lead at the break. An Allee Barnes (Blooming Glen, Pa./Pennridge) free throw at 4:16 forged the first tie of the night at 22-all, and Hadzimichalis knotted it at 2626 with 50 seconds. Graber answered with a layup and Rosolie hit a pair of free throws with two ticks left to push ahead by four. Hadzimichalis opened the second half with six straight points to
swing the lead back to the host Pacers, and McIntyre came back with six of her own to put the Crusaders back up four. Marywood used a pair of 3s opposite a Lil Snyder (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter Stasburg) layup to forge the sixth tie of the night at 40-40 with 12:04 left in the game. Alvernia freshman August Reichardt (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) put the Crusaders up one with a layup on the next possession and the Crusaders put together a 10-0 run to take command of the game up 50-40 with 6:40 to play. Rosolie and McIntyre both made a pair of free throws during the stretch and Snyder capped it with another layup. Marywood showed some fight running off five straight points to cut the Crusaders’ largest lead in half, but after an exchange of points, Graber scored five straight continued on pg. 13 Crusader Chronicle
Knights Pull Shocker In PEC Neumann College executed offensively in mid-season form in a 95-82 win over Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at the Physical Education Center. The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for Alvernia. The Knights (7-11, 5-5 PAC) shot the ball well from the floor (53 percent), took care of the ball (nine turnovers), hit the offensive glass (13 boards), and they made their free throws (24/80, 80 percent). In the game’s pivotal moment, junior guard Mike Hitchens (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) converted a 3-point play three minutes into the second half to start a 13-2 run that put the Knights up 63-50 with 12:10 to play. Alvernia (11-8, 8-2 PAC) was able to close the gap back to single digits two minutes later, but the Knights held them at arm’s length the rest of the way. Neumann used a mixture of pressure defense and timely shooting to even its conference record at 5-5. Junior Eli Hitchens (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) shot 11-for-17 from the floor and recorded a gamehigh 28 points. DJ Fritz (Waldorf, Md./Bishop MacNamara) scored 18 points, Dehran Patrick (Chester, Pa./Chester) 17, and sophomore Na’Sheed Linton (Trenton, N.J./Solebury Prep) added 13. Alvernia got 25 points from Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown), 20 from Matt King (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Pius X), 13 from David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham), and 12

from Tyrone Bradley (Chester, Pa./ Chester). King scored all 10 points for the Crusaders during a 10-4 run that gave Alvernia a 36-28 lead with just under three minutes left in the opening half. The Knights needed less than a minute to erase that lead getting four points from Eli Hitchens in an 8-0 run. Alvernia sophomore Nick Rivera (Reading, Pa./Holy Name), who finished the game 2-for-2 and has now hit 16 straight shots from the floor, dropped in a layup to break a 40-40 tie, but Thomas Davis (New York, N.Y./Our Savior) hit a 3 on the final possession to give Neumann a 43-42 lead at the break. Alvernia shot 69 percent from the floor in the first half (18-26), but still found itself down by a point, thanks in part to eight second-chance points for the Knights and nine turnovers. After an Eli Hitchens 3 put the guests up six in the early part of the second half, Shawell and Bradley cut the gap to two, but the Crusaders never regained the lead. Mike Hitchens was fouled on a jumper and hit the free throw to start Neumann’s pivotal run. He scored again following a Shawell bucket and Patrick added five straight before Fritz’s 3 at 12:10 put the Knights up 13. Graber Leads Season Saver
Sophomore guard Joanna Graber (Manalapan, N.J./Notre Dame) scored nine of her career-high tying 20 points during a pivotal run late in the second half that helped Alvernia post a 91-83 win over Neumann College Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at the Physical Education Center. Graber knocked down 6-of-10 shots from the floor including three 3s. The team finished 11-for-16 from behind the arc, but Graber, freshman Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain), and junior Michelle Lutzkanin (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) combined to hit 11-of-14 from long range. Lutzkanin hit 5-of-7 and McIntyre was perfect on three attempts including a 30-footer. Graber scored on a layup with 6:41 to play that gave cushion to a tenuous three point lead and she doubled the lead two minutes later with her third 3 of the day. Her two free throws with 1:07 to play closed her scoring for the day and gave the Crusaders breathing room for the final minute of play.

The first half was ruled by runs and despite shooting 52 percent from the floor, Neumann found itself on the wrong end of an 11-point gap at the break, 45-34. Alvernia posted the first significant run of the day going on a 9-0 run to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 14-6 lead with 13 minutes left on the clock. Ana Nieves (Reading, Pa./Greater New Bedford) started the run with back-to-back layups and Lutzkanin hit her first of two firsthalf 3s to keep it going. The Alvernia lead grew to nine on two occasions and 12 points, 29-17, with 7:33 showing before Neumann quickly put together an 8-0 run in just over 60 seconds to trim the gap to four. Caitlin Agnew (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) started it with a bucket and the Alvernia defense lost Coleen Healy (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) on back-to-back possessions and the 5-9 sophomore stroked a pair of 3s to quiet the home crowd. Alvernia senior Ashley Blevins (York, Pa./Eastern York) scored all six of her first-half points over the Joanna Graber scored a career-high next three-plus minutes, and the 20 points for the second time this Crusaders pushed the lead back week in a big win over Neumann. to 13 points with an 11-2 streak.
Neumann answered with a 5-0 spurt led by three from Agnew and had the gap down to eight with a minute to go. A series of five turnovers ensued with both teams having a chance to hold for the last shot of the half. The last turnover was a steal for Nieves who tossed the ball to McIntyre who threw up a runner from 30 feet that put Alvernia up 11 at the break. McIntyre opened the second half with a pair of free throws and four minutes later hit her second 3 of the day for a 15-point Alvernia lead. Her next 3 maintained the 15-point spread, but Neumann answered with a 7-0 run capped by Agnew’s 3-point play. Alvernia built the lead back to a dozen at the 10:38 mark and again with nine minutes to play, but once again the Knights responded, this time with back-to-back Healy 3s that sparked an 11-2 run that pulled the guests within three with 7:10 to play. Graber pushed the lead to five with a layup and scored five straight for the Crusaders for an 80-72 lead with 4:19 to play. Other than a pair of Krista DiRomualdo (Eddyston, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) free throws at 4:11, neither team scored in a two minute stretch before Alvernia freshman August Reichardt (Kenhorst, Pa./Governor Mifflin) hit two free throws for an eight point lead. Neumann answered with a bucket, but didn’t close to within four points until Heely knocked down her fifth 3 of the day for an 8581 count. Reichardt again hit two free throws and McIntyre closed the scoring with a layup.
