Dallas, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2008) – Alvernia College surrendered a 10-2 game-opening run at Misericordia University and never led in a 6961 loss to the Cougars Monday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at the Anderson Center. In a meeting of two teams with a 4-1 record in conference play, Misericordia (9-5, 5-1 PAC) got backto-back 3s and then four straight points from junior Lacey Degraw (Tyler Hill, Pa./Honesdale) to open up a 10-2 lead with just only five minutes gone. Alvernia (5-10, 4-2 PAC) answered with a 10-3 run to trim that lead down to a point, 1312, at the 10:04 mark. Senior Jill Rosolie (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) led the way with five of her teamhigh 19 points during the run. Rosolie scored again a minute later to stay within one, but the Cougars ran off 11 of the next 14 points for a 26-17 lead with 3:36 showing on the first half clock. Alvernia cut that lead down to five with four straight points, but the

Alvernia cut the lead to single digits on three occasions later in the game, but could not get closer than nine until the final minute. Alvernia freshman Alex Velazquez (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) joined Rosolie in double figures with 14. Degraw led the Cougars with a game-high 21 points. Amy Hughes (Scranton, Pa/Bishop Hannan) added 16 and Lyndsey Sykes (Avalon, N.J./Middle Township) pitched in 11 points on the strength of three 3s. the final bucket of the half and the Cougars took a 34-31 lead into the break. After hitting its first five 3s Alvernia cooled off considerably finishing the half shooting 35 percent from the floor, but it did hit all seven free throws to remain close. Shawell tied the score quickly in the second half with a 3 and after a handful of ties and lead-changes, Alvernia asserted a bit of control with an 11-4 run capped by a King 3 that put the guests up seven, 58-51, with 6:26 to go. Alvernia got a bit sloppy over the next two minutes with three fouls, two turnovers, and misses on the only two shots it got while the Cougars made three free throws and a layup to cut the gap to two, 58-56, with 4:04 to play. Then it was the hosts who went cold missing each one of their last seven shots from the floor and getting just one point on a Vinnie Baumunk (Dushore, Pa./Sullivan County) free throw. King’s 3 at 2:49 made it a twopossession game and Shawell hit two free throws to answer the single from Baumunk. Washington then finished the scoring with a pair of free throws on the final possession. Alvernia finished the day shooting 40 percent from the floor and a season-best 93 percent (14-for-15) from the free throw line. The Crusaders will return home to host Cabrini College in a women’s and men’s doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 1:00 and 3:00.
