GMC answered with seven straight points for its largest lead of the half, but King’s first 3 stopped the streak. Alvernia regained the lead on a Tyrone Bradley (Chester, Pa./Chester) layup at 14:52, and 3s from King and David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham) pushed the Alvernia lead to five, 16-11. The 6-2 junior knocked down his only 3 of the half on the next possession and his perfectly placed skip pass out of a double team found King with all kinds of time and he obliged with his third 3 for a 36-26 lead with 5:29 on the clock. Gwynedd-Mercy finally ended the streak, but the Crusaders followed with seven of the next nine for a 43-31 lead, their largest of the half. Five straight from the Griffins cut that lead to seven and Shawell’s layup in front of the halftime buzzer sent the teams to the break with Alvernia enjoying that same spread, 49-42. Junior forward Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) scored a game-high 29 points to lead Alvernia College to a 102-75 win over Centenary College Thursday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at the Physical Education Center. Sophomore Jon Harvey (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) hit a 3 from the top of the arc with 2:00 left in the game putting Alvernia over 100 for both games of a doubleheader sweep over Centenary in its first year in the conference. in the early going with Corey Kearney (North Arlington, N.J./Queen of Peace) scoring six of its first eight points. Alvernia held a 10-8 lead after the first five minutes and exploded for 12 straight to open up a 14-point lead, 22-8. Shawell scored eight of his 23 first-half points during the streak including his second dunk of the night at the 12:40 mark. Centenary temporarily slowed the pace on a traditional 3-point play by Andrew Baker (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), but King capped a 72 run with his second of two firsthalf 3s and the Alvernia lead was 16 points, 29-13, 10:57 to go. The Cyclones stemmed the tide again with a pair of 3s cutting the gap to 10 points with exactly 7:00 showing on the first-half clock, but Alvernia needed less than four minutes to double its lead with four different players scoring during 13-3 run. The lead remained 20 following Shawell’s second 3 of the night, but Centenary scored the final bucket

of the half to hit the break down 18 points, 47-29. Alvernia kept the lead over 14 points for the remainder of the game and stretched it to as many 32 points in the final three minutes of play. UPCOMING

York College (Pa.) scored 11 of the final 12 points in the first half to take a 12-point lead at the break and then hit Alvernia with a 13-2 run midway through the second half en route to a 76-57 win in non-conference women’s basketball action Monday evening at Charles Wolf Gymnasium. York placed three players in double figures led by junior Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) who totaled a game-high 21 points in 32 minutes. Alvernia was led by freshman Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) who scored 15. Senior Jill Rosolie (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) chipped in with 12 for the guests. McIntyre scored on a free throw with 2:58 left in the opening half to cut the York lead down to one, 29-28, and the Crusaders missed a layup that would have given them the lead before the Spartans (11-3) asserted control.

Ward scored on a layup and Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity), who finished with 13 points, hit a 3 for a six-point lead. Alvernia hit a free throw to trim the lead, but York finished the half with six straight points for a 40-29 lead at the break. Alvernia slowly chipped away at the lead in the second half pulling within eight, 50-42, on a Rosolie layup at 13:16, but a Ward bucket and then back-toback 3s sparked the 13-2 run that put the hosts up 63-44 with 8:36 to play. Alvernia will return home to face Centenary College Thursday in the first conference meeting between the two schools. Both games of Thursday’s women’s and men’s doubleheader will be webcast live through the Alvernia College website, http://athletics. alvernia.edu.

Not To 50! Alvernia Shoots 50 Free Throws In Win At Cabrini

Junior Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) scored 12 of his gamehigh 34 points from the free throw line and shot 16 of Alvernia College’s team record 50 free throw attempts in a 9590 win over Cabrini College Monday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference men’s basketball action at the Dixon Center. Alvernia reached 90 points for the first time in almost exactly a year having last hit the mark Jan. 13 of last year in a 93-76 win at Marywood University. The Crusaders scored six points from the stripe in the final 96 seconds and were a collective 20-for-29 from the free throw line in the second half. Alvernia junior David Washington (Durham, N.C./Northern Durham) broke a 79-all tie hitting 3-of-4 free throws and Shawell followed with two more as the Crusaders (5-8, 2-1 PAC) built a five-point lead with 3:28 to play and never trailed again. Compared to what the Crusaders are used to this season the first half was an evenly matched track meet with both teams combining for 22 points over the opening four minutes of play. Alvernia averages just over 70 points per game, but the early pace nearly kept up through the rest of the half with Cabrini taking a 46-45 lead into the break. The Cavaliers were also in uncharted waters coming in averaging less than 68 points per contest. Neither team could manage any separation in the second half until Alvernia answered a game-tying 3 by Glenn

Washington (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) with a 7-0 spurt to take a 76-69 lead with 7:41 to play. The streak once again started at the line with Matt King (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Pius X) hitting 2of-3 free throws and junior center Tyrone Bradley (Chester, Pa./Chester) capped it with back-to-back layups. The Cavs, who hit 23-of-36 from the line, answered with two free throws and when senior Randy Reid (Philadelphia, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), who went over 1,000 career points, knocked down a 3 with 5:48 to play, the hosts were back up one, 77-76. King stroked one of his four 3s on the next Alvernia possession to swing the lead back to the Crusaders and Glenn Washington hit two free throws before Alvernia’s 5-0 run from the line. Glenn Washington finished with 24 points for the Cavs and Reid threw in 21. King totaled 20 for Alvernia to join Shawell in double figures along with David Washington (14) and Bradley (13). Alvernia will return home to host Centenary College in a women’s and men’s doubleheader on Thursday. Both games will be webcast through the Alvernia web page, http://athletics. alvernia.edu.

Then to 100 Alvernia Cracks The Century Mark In Win Over Centenary

Freshman Kelli McIntyre (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) scored a career high 25 points and senior Jill Rosolie (Quarryville, Pa./ Solanco) score a season-high 20 to lead Alvernia College to a 108-80 win over Centenary Thursday evening in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women’s basketball action at the Physical Education Center. The 20-minute snow delay did little to slow McIntyre who established a career-high for the second time in as many games. She scored 17 points in the first half as the Crusaders built a 16-point lead at the break, 47-31, and the Crusaders cruised to the 28-point win. Centenary, which entered Thursday with an unblemished conference record in its first PAC season, put nine points on the board in first two-plus minutes and held a 9-2 lead when Nicole Van Tassel (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) dropped in a layup at 17:35. Alvernia answered quickly as McIntyre’s first 3 of the night flip-flopped the 9-2 run and knotted the game at 11-all with 15:19 on the first-half clock. McIntyre’s next 3 answered back-to-back Cyclone buckets and the Crusaders wrapped up a 23-7 run over the next seven minutes that left the hosts up 34-22. Centenary trimmed that lead down to single digits twice in the next three minutes, but Alvernia hit a pair of 3s and McIntyre’s two free throws to close the half on an 8-0 streak. Centenary managed to stay within striking distance thanks to a 10-2 advantage in second chance points in the opening frame, but Alvernia was aided by 14 points off the

bench. Centenary made a mini run early in the second half pulling back to within 11 points, 51-40, with 17:46 to play, and found itself within the same spread at the 13:07 mark, but Alvernia scored seven straight and 14 of the next 18 for a 21-point lead with 9:37 to go. Senior Stephanie Roberts (Bakersfield, Cal./South) hit backto-back 3s for the Cyclones to cut the gap to 15 points, but they got no closer as Alvernia pulled away for its first ever win over Centenary as a conference foe. Alvernia was 2-0 against the Cyclones in non-conference action with both games played in the early ‘90s. Sophomore Joanna Graber (Manalapan, N.J./Notre Dame) joined Rosolie and McIntyre in double-figures with a season-high 17 points. McIntyre rounded out her impressive line with five assists and four steals in just 27 minutes. Roberts led the Cyclones with 22 points. Kristen Camuso (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Josephs by the Sea) scored 14 and Ayana Way (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) added 13. The 108 points is the most Alvernia has scored in a game since a 108-30 win over Rosemont on January 31, 1995. Alvernia will host PAC preseason favorite Gwynedd-Mercy Saturday afternoon in a women’s and men’s doubleheader. Both games will be webcast live through the Alvernia College website, http:// athletics.alvernia.edu. Kelli McIntyre toughed her way to a career-high 25 points in Alvernia’s 10880 win over Centenary. C r u s a d e r C hr o nicle Player of the Week Terrence Shawell (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) Shawell averaged 32.7 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Crusaders who ran through a conference week undefeated.
