My Fellow Knights,

May 2016

Fairleigh Dickinson Athletics won its third and fourth NEC Championships of the 2015-2016 academic year last month! Women’s golf and women’s tennis joined women’s soccer and men’s basketball as the programs to claim conference titles so far this year. Our women’s golf team defended their conference crown and captured their second consecutive championship at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, FL. The title is the sixth in program history, with all six won in the last nine seasons. Our Knights represented the NEC at the NCAA Regionals in Baton Rouge, LA, and finished in 18th place overall. Freshman Anneke Strobach was named NEC Rookie of the Year and junior Rebecca Wright and sophomore Gabriela Santini both earned Second Team All-NEC honors. On the men’s side, junior U Minn Woon is the NEC Men’s Golf Individual Champion and will represent our University with pride at the NCAA Regionals at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee, on May 16th. Led by NEC Player of the Year Nichole Chis, our women’s tennis team captured its fourth NEC Championship in five years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons. Our Knights will compete against #14 Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, on May 13. Senior Gisela Castany, junior Shreya Pasricha, sophomore Katarina Pavlovic, and freshman Liza Rachenko joined Chis as First Team All-NEC selections. Our women’s tennis student-athletes continue to be the conference standard. I could not be more proud of head coach Jeff Brandes in his first season at Fairleigh Dickinson and what our program has accomplished over the last five years. Our women’s track and field team finished in third place at the NEC Championships, which is their best finish since 1999. Sophomore Decoda Simpson defended her title in the discus and sophomore Mae Thompson followed up her 800-meter win at the NEC Indoor Championships with the same feat at the NEC Outdoor Championships. Junior Mark Ramsey also won a pair of conference titles in discus and shot put for our men’s track and field team. Earlier this month, we honored our student-athletes for their exceptional accomplishments at the 61st Annual Athletic Awards Banquet. This is by far my favorite night of the year. It allows our student-athletes and their friends and family to gather together with our alumni and administration to celebrate the best moments of the year. Senior Amanda Goulet won the Dr. Harriet McCormick Female Athlete of the Year Award after being named the NEC Player of the Year and leading our women’s soccer program to their first NEC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in school history. Men’s basketball sophomore Earl Potts Jr. was named the Walter Marusyn Male Athlete of the Year after garnering NEC Most Improved Player and NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors en route to the NEC Championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years. With our undergraduate commencement approaching on Tuesday, our student-athletes continue to receive recognition for their outstanding academic performances in the classroom. I am truly proud to report that 39 of our student-athletes were named to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, six of our student-athletes received further distinction and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for earning a 3.75 cumulative GPA or higher. Please join me in congratulating all of our remarkable student-athletes on their academic and athletic achievements. As always, thank you for your continued support and I hope that you can join us for the 26th Annual Janney Montgomery Scott Knights Golf Classic on Monday, June 6th, at Hackensack Golf Club! Go Knights! David A. Langford Director of Athletics, Metropolitan Campus
