Fair Oaks, CA— “Veni,Vidi Veci.” We came, we saw, we conquered. That Latin phrase describes perfectly the month of November here on campus. Everyone has been ‘running’ to keep up the pace.

With all the excitement and energy of APEX it is no wonder we are all so tired. On November 30th, we officially participated in the APEX Fun Run; however, the event ended an energy filled two weeks of lessons and fun. Students from kindergarten to eighth grade lined up on our field to attempt to run 36 laps. The big question wasn’t if they could finish the laps but would the event evolve into the largest mud bath in the world.

Fortunately, the students all remained, ‘mostly’ clean and all had smiles on their faces. There was even time to sing Mr. John a birthday song. Leading us up to the run, our APEX leaders, DJ and Rad Robin, led us in some amazing leadership lessons. We learned how to lead by empowering the best in other people. We also learned, that to make our dreams happen we must never quit. Thank you fantastic leaders for your energy and passion.

Was the sliming warranted? Maybe. Was it an act of hazing? Maybe. Was it funny? Yes it was. Mr. John squirmed. He wiggled, dripped and oozed. It was so much fun to watch. It was truly, LENGENDARY!

Our APEX antics didn’t end with the run. Oh no. It continued on December 7th when our friendly neighborhood Dean of Students was slimed by the teaching staff.

Club M Update “You better watch out, you better not cry.” You better not pout because Club M is here for your holiday needs. At the time of this publication, sign-ups for our winter intersession are closed; however, that doesn’t mean that we won’t be having fun. As it is the ‘winter’ break, the Club M activity theme for the month will be just that, winter. Our activities will center around winter art projects and fitness activities to increase our flexibility.

If you would like more information about our Club M program please contact our Club M Coordinator, Natalie Hansen, in the front office in person or by phone. If you would like to contact her by email her email is [email protected]. As always, your children are the reason we are here. Thank you for making Club M so successful.

Scholastic Book Fair—Thank You Parent Volunteers Another December means another Scholastic Book Fair. Of course, any discussion of the book fair means that we can not forget to thank all of our parent volunteers. Thank you. Thank you and thank you once more, parents. Your help made the book fair a great success. If you didn’t volunteer to help set up, run or tear down the event, a hearty thank you is still in order.

Over the winter break,

Staff In Focus—Lori Blair, Reading Instructor Reading is a foundational skill. Without reading many other skills would not be possible or, at least, be made more difficult. Here at CMP American River, you may not know that we have a Reading Support Instructor, Lori Blair. I sat down with her at the beginning of December to learn more about her. How are you Ms. Lori? What is your favorite part of working with students on their reading? Words are so important. The right words can express so much. I get the

opportunity to empower students to be readers and life-long learners. For this, I am thankful.

“The more I read, the more I Would you rather have an unlimited first class plane ticket or never have to pay for food at restaurants? Are you kidding me? Passion driven Education

A quick note: as you read this next article, please imagine the theme from ‘Chariots of Fire’ playing in the background. If you weren’t aware, each year the city of Sacramento hosts the California International Marathon (CIM). Approximately nine thousand runners from all over the world come to Sacramento to run the rolling hills of the 26.2 miles course. As a USA Track and Field sanctioned course Boston Marathon qualifier, marathoners can come attempt to make the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon.

Meece, Chans Folger and Melissa Hermann formed the core of CMP American River’s marathon running team. While Cherie Cooney, Dean of Students from Shingle Springs, stepped in for Mr. John Meinz to complete the four person relay. Most amazing of all was the four person middle school team that ran the complete CIM! Bryce Bowler, Miles Mulford, Rilley Mulford and Madden Magee did an amazing job finishing the race. Congratulations runners!

This year, CMP American River Teachers and students stepped up to the challenging of running the CIM to demonstrate their commitments to living a healthy, active life. Our running club participated in the 2.62 mile maraFUNrun and had a blast. Each student trained diligently twice a week for two and a half months in preparation for the event.

Montessori at Home—Minimizing for the Holidays

California Montessori Project

Recently, the California Montessori Project Central Administration solicited student art for a Holiday Card Contest. This year’s theme was, “The Gift of Giving.” In true CMP fashion, there were many entries received; however, only one of those cards could be chosen. The student who was chosen as this year’s winner was, Julia Rhodes. As part of her prize, Julia received copies of her art card and a

gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Great job, Julia. Stay tuned for next year’s Holiday Art Card completion!
