Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 4 •  The pa[ern for a six day work week was established in gathering manna. On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congrega2on came and told Moses, he said to them, "This is what the LORD has commanded: 'Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is leG over lay aside to be kept 2ll the morning. '"So they laid it aside 2ll the morning, as Moses commanded them, and it did not s2nk, and there were no worms in it. Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none." On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? See! The LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day." So the people rested on the seventh day. Now the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. (Exodus 16:22 – 31)

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 4 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (Exodus 20:11) Versus You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.(Deuteronomy 5:15) •  The Hebrew word Shabbat comes from a verb meaning “to cease.”

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 4 •  Deuteronomy grounds the command in salva>on from the physical bondage of Egyp>an slavery that looks forward to: Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest s>ll stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. (Hebrews 4:1) and ul>mately to Jesus our Creator and Redeemer. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Ma\hew 11:28-30) •  Every aspect of Israel’s life is supposed reflect that the people belong to the Lord and are sustained by Him.

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 4 •  The Commandment requires God’s people to work 6 days in their worldly voca>on and rest one day from these worldly labors. •  The Sabbath is also set apart as a holy day to honor the holy God and celebrate his work in crea>on and redemp>on. •  Even work animals, as well as all people are wisely granted a one day of rest in every seven days though only believers truly honor God on the Sabbath. •  The principle is one day of rest in every seven not exclusively Sunday. Those who work in jobs that must be staffed on Sunday can s>ll set their rest day apart to honor God.

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 4 And the LORD said to Moses, "You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, 'Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your genera2ons, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanc2fy you. You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their genera2ons, as a covenant forever. It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'" And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the tes2mony, tablets of stone, wri\en with the finger of God. (Exodus 31:12-18)

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 5 Honor* your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12) •  The first four Commandments focus on our rela>onship with God and the last six on our rela>onship with people. •  The family is the anchor of society and honor towards parents is essen>al. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruc>on of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-4) * honor means to treat a person with the proper respect due the person and their role.

The Law – The Ten Commandments # 5 •  While the commandment is addressed to children, in adulthood children should care for their parents as needed. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)—then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradi>on that you have handed down. And many such things you do.” (Mark 7:10-13)
