Giving – Session 10 Session Summary: Giving is one of the five uses of money, and in our study of giving we will cover what we want to know, to believe, and to do with regard to giving. Additionally, Ron Blue addresses a wide variety of issues including why to give, where to give, the benefits of giving, triggers for giving, and frequently asked questions about giving. The end result is that you will be challenged in your personal convictions about giving, as well as empowered and excited about helping your clients realize their giving potential. R.G. LaTourneau is a wonderful introduction to this subject. He had an eternal mindset that recognized all of his wealth was God’s and this allowed him to choose to live on 10% and give 90%. “I had to love God more than my machines and the only way I could do that was to give.” “I never want to seek security in this life.” “I would rather leave my children to the world, than leave my children the world.” To Know About Giving: 1. The _______ Biblical reasons for giving 2. The three levels of giving 3. The benefits to an advisor when his/her clients are encouraged to give 4. Five factors that motivate ___________ giving 5. Where does scripture command us to give? To Believe: 1. Giving breaks the _________ of money. 2. Giving is the key to becoming financially free. 3. Giving should be an ___________ part of every maturing believer’s life. 4. Giving is commanded in scripture both for the benefit of the giver and the recipient.

5. Giving should be in proportion to one’s income and be done regularly and cheerfully. 6. 10% giving is rarely the “right” amount. To Do: 1. To ______________ give generously 2. To be able to articulate clearly your own giving convictions 3. To be able to encourage your clients to give more generously 4. To hold your clients accountable to “their” giving goals 5. To have and be able to share client “giving” ______________ Perspective: IRS - Tax returns show that giving is inversely related to income. Barna - 37% of people who go to church regularly give $0. Ronsavelle - In the 1990’s, evangelical giving fell from 6.38% to 4.08% of income. Prudential - Only 8% of wills contain giving. It is estimated that US taxpayers gave a total of $241 billion to charities in the year 2002 (2.3% of GNP). Of this amount, $84 billion went to ______________ institutions. Only 3-5% of those who donate money to a church tithe (give 10% of their incomes). Among evangelicals, ____% tithed in 2002. (Barna) 96% of evangelical giving is given out of income and only 4% is given out of net worth. If Christian giving increased from 2.5% (the current rate) to 10% of income (a simple tithe), an additional $_____ billion would be available for Kingdom work. The funding of the Great Commission is possible! Most church giving comes from people over age ____. Howard Dayton, CEO of Crown Financial Ministries, states that with many pastors, most of their giving comes from members over 65. They estimate that it takes 5 people under age 35 to replace one senior’s giving. Session 10

Financial support to churches and ministries is tenuous at present – and even weaker in the future. Barna Research Group 2003 Survey of Church Giving: The mean amount of money donated to churches in 2003 was $824. This is less than the inflation-adjusted amount for the year 2000. The segments that were least likely to tithe included adults under 35 and those from households with a gross income of $40,000 to $59,999. Based on the Ronald Blue and Co. survey, when you help believing clients plan and manage their finances, giving will go up. Why Give? 1. _______________ On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. (1 Corinthians 16:2 NKJV) Honor the LORD with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. (Proverbs 3:9-10 NKJV) Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something ___ ________ him who has need. (Ephesians 4:28 NKJV) 2. ______________ Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. (Philippians 4:17 NKJV) Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. (Luke 6:38 NIV) Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness! (Matthew 25:23 NIV) Session 10

3. Recognition of God’s _____________ Yours, Oh Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, Oh Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Riches and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and it is at your discretion that people are made great and given strength.(1 Chronicles 29:11-12 NLT) for, ‘The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.’(1Corinthians 10:26 NIV) The earth is the Lord’s, and _______________ in it. The world and all its people belong to Him. (Psalms 24:1 NLT) 4. To Gain An __________ Perspective So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own? No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. (Luke 16:11-13 NIV) Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:18-19 NIV) 5. Love For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV) But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? (1 John 3:17 NKJV) Session 10

The advisor’s objective is to help his client understand that “God owns it all” and that giving is to be done cheerfully and ________________, which also means that spouses are in perfect unity as to the amount and organizations given to. 2. The “How Much is Enough” tools help a client understand how much can be given now and in the future. 3. The Advisor should be able to help his client give creatively using such tools and techniques as giving of appreciated property and charitable trusts. Frequently Asked Questions: Q. What if a husband and wife disagree on tithing? A. God is far more interested in the _________________ than he is in the ___________. God does not need the money, but he does desire the relationship. If one’s desire to give is going to be a barrier in the relationship then additional prayerful consideration should go into that decision. Work on the relationship, focus on being an example to your spouse (1 Peter 3) and pray for God’s wisdom in the situation. Session 10

Q. Which has a higher priority, debt repayment or giving? A. To the individual or couple seeking to get out of debt, but not in a crisis situation one may suggest they continue giving, but that the level of giving be prayerfully determined. Concurrently, a debt repayment plan needs to be in action. To the individual or couple deeply in debt and in crisis one may suggest they meet with a spiritual leader in their life and prayerfully consider what God would have them do. A debt repayment plan needs to be established and accountability needs to be set up regarding whatever the person/couple felt it was God had called them to do regarding giving, so that once the crisis has been averted they can get back to systematic giving. Q. What do you think about Storehouse Giving? A. This is the concept that all giving should go to the local church. While I personally do not agree with this concept, I do subscribe to the principles of obedience and ________________. If you belong to a church that teaches storehouse giving then you need to be obedient to that authority, or perhaps it would be best to consider finding another church. Q. Should one tithe on “gross” or “net?” A. Do you want God to bless you on the gross or the net? Tithing is always on the gross. Please take the time to complete your first pass at your own personal convictions related to this session on the “Personal Convictions Worksheet.”
