Can I contact a prospect or his or her relatives? NO. Any such contact could result in the prospect being declared ineligible to participate at UVU. Even inadvertent contact can cause a prospect to lose eligibility if it is prearranged, occurs at the prospect’s school (or site of competition). Additionally, no type of Social Media should be used to directly or indirectly contact the prospect.

What if the prospect is the child of an old friend and is being recruited by UVU? You may continue to enjoy the same relationship with the family that you had before. However, you may not use that friendship to participate in any recruitment of the prospect

What if I know of a fantastic prospect that would be a good fit at UVU? You are welcome to provide information to UVU’s coaches, alerting them to the prospect’s talent. Call UVU athletics at (801) 863-8998.

UVU is responsible for the actions of its boosters. If you violate any NCAA, conference, or UVU rule, you and the university may be subject to severe penalties. These may include, loss of eligibility for prospective or current student-athletes, financial penalties for UVU, and/or disassociation from UVU athletics and loss of benefits and privileges associated thereto (i.e., season tickets) for you.

This is not an exhaustive summary of NCAA rules, Please contact the Compliance Office with any questions about their application.

UVU Office of Athletic Compliance 800 W University Pkwy #282 Orem, UT 84058-5999 (801) 863-8998

Thank you for your support of Wolverine Athletics! Your contribution is key to the success of UVU’s coaches, its staff, and, most importantly, its studentathletes

Who is a “Booster?” You are a booster, or a “Representative of Athletics Interests,” if you: 

Have participated in, or are a member of, an organization promoting UVU’s athletics program (i.e., Wolverine Club);

Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or booster organization;

Have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;

Have provided benefits to enrolled studentathletes or their families; or

Have otherwise been involved in promoting UVU (i.e., purchasing season tickets).

Who is a “Prospect?” A prospect generally is any student who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student may be classified as a prospect earlier, if UVU provides him or her (or friends or relatives) with any financial assistance or other benefits not normally provided to prospective students. The individual remains a prospect until he or she attends class as a full-time student (fall or spring) or reports for preseason practice (summer prior to initial enrollment).

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a UVU employee or representative to provide a prospective or current student-athlete (or their relatives or friends) a benefit that is not generally available to the public or other UVU students, or is not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

NCAA-Approved Benefits Include: 

You may provide student-athletes with a meal on an occasional basis. You may host the meal, or hold it on campus (or at place of home competition). The meal may be catered, but it may not occur at a restaurant. Prospects may NOT receive occasional meals. The meal must be approved by compliance in advance.

You may employ current studentathletes both during the academic year and during the summer. The student-athlete must be paid at a rate commensurate with the going rate for similar services in that area; the student-athlete may only be paid for work actually performed; the pay rate may not include any remuneration for the value or utility the student-athlete brings because of the student-athlete’s athletics ability; and the student-athlete must obtain approval from compliance before starting work.

In limited circumstances, you may involve student-athletes in charitable, educational, or non-profit promotional activities. You must contact the Compliance Office to get approval before involving studentathletes in this sort of activity.

Prohibited Extra Benefits Include: 

Providing gifts of any kind (e.g., birthday, holiday, graduation)

Providing discounted (or free) meals, entertainment, or lodging (e.g., rent, housing, hotel)

Providing Reduced-cost (or free) transportation, including lending a car or providing a ride for any non-emergency reason

Providing reduced cost (or free) services, including telephone use, medical services, car repairs, etc.

Providing financial support, including cash, loans, cosigning a loan, etc.

Purchasing or trading for athletic items, including rings, jerseys, autographs, etc.

Using the name, picture, or likeness of an enrolled student-athlete to advertise, recommend, or promote any commercial product or service.
