About the Eagles The Edgewood College women’s basketball team didn’t struggle putting up points in the opening weekend of the 201415 season at the Dubuque Tipoff Tournament but they did have trouble slowing down the offenses of Dubuque and Loras College and opened the season 0-2. The Eagles dug themselves into too big of a hole Saturday evening against Dubuque after shooting just 6-for-23 in the first half. They trailed 51-26 at the half and the Spartans used a 16-0 run midway through the half to run away with the momentum. The Eagles would explode for 53 points in the second half on 16-of-32 shooting but failed to contain the duo of Jenna Kotas (22 points) and Meggie Schmidt (18 points, eight rebounds). Eagles point guard Rachel Pope did all she could to keep the Eagles close and had 28 points, which was just one shy of her career high, but the Eagles ultimately fell 94-79.

The Eagles found similar trouble against Loras and found themselves down 52-33 at the break. Up 11-9 at one point, the Duhawks then went on to score 22 of the next 29 points to pull away. The Eagles shot 31.3 percent in the game but were hurt more by rebounding and turnovers. The Duhawks had 44 points in the paint and 24 second-chance points, while the Eagles turned it over 20 times. The Eagles eventually fell 99-71.
About the Inferno Alverno College lost big to UW-La Crosse 85-45 in the Holiday Inn Express Tipoff Classic to kick off the season but followed that up with a 67-50 win over Mount Mary on Sunday. The Inferno shot only 23.8 percent from the field against UWL but used a big early lead against Mount Mary to find the victory. Mollie Mikyska is leading the way for the Inferno this season, as she put up 14 points against UWL and had 22 points and nine rebounds against Mount Mary. Julie Gallegos (13.0) is the other Inferno player averaging at least 10 points per game.
