EDUCATION CANNOT WAIT:
PLAN, PRIORITIZE, PROTECT EDUCATION IN CRISIS-AFFECTED CONTEXTS EDUCATION CANNOT WAIT IN CRISIS-AFFECTED CONTEXTS BECAUSE EDUCATION: Is what parents, children and youth ask for: • A good education is top priority in the World We Want post-2015
Is smart economics:
“When I talked to [families] about what they wanted most for their children, it was not shelter, although they needed it; not security, although they required it; not food, although they desperately wanted it; it was education for their children.” Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy
• For every $1 spent on crisis prevention, $7 is saved in recovery costs • Natural disasters have cost the world more than US$1 trillion since 2000 • The annual world military expenditure for 2011 was $1738 billion. 6 days of that expenditure at that level would educate all children
Saves lives:
• Education helps children to make the right choice between war or peace • Children learn how to protect themselves in times of crisis
Has moral and humanitarian implications:
• 28 million children globally are affected by armed conflicts • Disasters killed more than a million people and affected over a quarter of the global population since 2000. Over one third of those are children and youth • Education supports other child focused sectors (health, protection, nutrition, water, sanitation) • Children cannot wait for a future; they should enjoy their right to education today
WE CANNOT WAIT: ADOPT THE 3PS APPROACH PLAN for prevention, preparedness and response. Education sector plans must analyse, respond
to, monitor, and budget for potential risks affecting the education system. They must ensure that education is equitable, inclusive and relevant, and that education continues throughout crises.
PRIORITIZE what children, youth, and families affected by crisis want. Increased funds are
needed to respond to community demands for education during a crisis. Education is a platform for all sectors to provide holistic services.
PROTECT children, teachers and education facilities. Protection of education spaces from attack, military use and occupation of schools must be ensured through strict observance of international humanitarian standards.
DON’T JUST RESPOND…PLAN, PRIORITISE AND PROTECT
