Author to Discuss How Could This Happen: Explaining the Holocaust Whippany, NJ, October 1, 2014 — “Anything that has happened can happen again,” says eminent scholar Yehuda Bauer of Yad Vashem in Israel. In the wake of rising local and global anti-Semitism, How Could This Happen: Explaining the Holocaust, a new book by historian Dan McMillan, will be the focus of a timely discussion by the author at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21. Sponsored by the Holocaust Council of Greater MetroWest, the program will take place at the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus, 901 Rt. 10 Whippany. The Holocaust has long seemed incomprehensible, a monumental crime that defies our powers of description and explanation. In this volume, the result of nearly four decades of engagement with German history and the Shoah, Dr. McMillan brings together the vast body of Holocaust research to reveal how a once progressive society like Germany could have carried out this crime. Dr. McMillan holds a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University and a law degree from Fordham University School of Law. He has published scholarly work in both history and law, and has worked as prosecuting attorney and as a history professor. He lives in New York City and writes about history and politics. The Holocaust Council of Greater MetroWest, a department of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ (Federation), is dedicated to remembering the Holocaust and conveying its lessons through education, dialogue, commemorative events, conference, and programs for teens and adults. Federation cares for people in need, builds Jewish life, and saves the world, one person at a time, every day as the center of a network of 27 local and 4 overseas agencies. The program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. RSVPs are requested to [email protected]. For further information, call (973) 929-3067.
