Asylum seekers and other migrants are arriving in Europe and encountering rapidly changing border controls as they seek transit through Europe. The EU is implementing its “hotspot” approach for new arrival registration in Italy and Greece. This is a snapshot of the situation based on available unclassified data as of March 4, 2016.

In September 2015, the European Commission decided by majority vote to relocate 160,000 asylum seekers from Greece and Italy* to other European states over the next two years.

As of March 11, 2016, 19 Member States have made 6,945 of the pledged 160,000 places available, and have relocated 368 of 39,600 asylum seekers from Italy and 569 of 66,400 asylum seekers from Greece.
