SERMON NOTES

This week’s sermon Untamable James 3:1-12

The tongue is small but mighty and directs one's life.

The tongue is small but has the potential for great destruction.

The tongue is revealing and has the power of death and life in it.

Proverbs 18:21; Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Proverbs is wisdom literature and is not silent on the subject of our speech. So let's look at some text that speak of our tongues and make notes of application for your life.

ICEBREAKER: Did your mom or dad ever wash your mouth out with soap? If so why?

* Proverbs 10:8

REVIEW: Read James 3:1-12

* Proverbs 12:18-19

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Read point one on the front of the MAP. Do you agree that the tongue is mighty and can direct one's life for the good or the bad? If so why and if not why?

* Proverbs 13:3

Read the second point on the MAP. In what ways can the tongue be destructive? Can you think of times you have said something that you shouldn't have said when it "just slipped out?"

* Proverbs 15:4-7, 23,28

Can you think of times that you should have said something and didn't? Describe some of those times.

* Proverbs 16:21, 23-24

Read the third point on the MAP and verses 9 and 10. What two things does the tongue do? Why are they contradictory? Why should Christians not bless God and curse those who are made in His image?

* Proverbs 18:21 What does the tongue reveal about your heart? Also read Ephesians 4:29- 32 and think over how we should use our tongue and how we should not. Think over ways that you will make every effort to prayerfully speak from a new heart by the power of the Holy Spirit! Is there a way you have used your tongue to tear down someone recently or years ago? If so did you ever repent of that sin and seek their forgiveness? If not how will you go about doing that this week? APPLICATION QUESTIONS TO DISCUSS: In what ways can we speak the truth in love to those in our lives? How can you use your tongue to encourage someone without giving into flattery?
