NICOLA WELLMAN Liberty • Soph. Spring Hill, Fla. Wellman went undefeated in both her singles and doubles matches last week. She captured a decisive singles point in Liberty’s 4-3 win over new Big South member Longwood. She defeated Hannah Hill 6-2, 6-4 and partnered with Rebekah Jenkins to win at No. 1 doubles over Allison Shulman and Marta Pinyol. Against Morgan State, she dropped Tiffany Hughes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. This marks Wellman’s first Player of the Week plaudit this season.
THE CRONS BRAND FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK ALICE GARCIA Winthrop Brasilia, Brazil Garcia finished the week with a 3-0 singles record at No. 3, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 record last week. She started her week with a win over No. 71 Tatiana Illova of North Carolina State (1-6, 6-1, 6-1). In the Match against Louisville, she defeated Louisville’s Manuele Velasquez 7-5, 6-3, and partnered with Giovanna Portioli for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Garcia concluded her week with a 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory over Furman’s Michele Stanford, and an 8-5 doubles win. This is Garcia’s third consecutive Freshman of the Week honor this season.

BIG SOUTH WOMEN’S TENNIS WEEKLY REPORT • CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK • FEB. 26, 2013 CAMPBELL Campbell is 1-7 on the campaign, but came up just short of upsetting East Carolina in a 4-3 loss in Greenville, N.C. ... The Camels play Liberty, Gardner-Webb and Bethune Cookman in the coming week. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN Charleston Southern went 0-1 on the week, falling to South Carolina on the road at the USC Field House on Saturday afternoon ... The Lady Bucs fell to the No. 38 Gamecocks 5-0 ... The Gamecocks opened up play winning two of the three doubles matches in taking the first point of the match ... USC was also leading on the final court when they clinched the point ... CSU fell on courts 1-4 to drop the match in straight sets, with the Gamecocks leading on courts 5 and 6 when play suspended. Charleston Southern returns home to the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, hosting Bethune-Cookman and Longwood next weekend. COASTAL CAROLINA Coastal Carolina lost its only game this past week, 4-3 at USC Upstate ... The loss puts Coastal at 2-3 overall ... This week Coastal has three games starting with Wright St. at home on Wednesday, then travelling to Radford and Liberty to start its conference play. GARDNER-WEBB Gardner-Webb dropped two non-conference matches this past week, moving to 1-4 overall this season with losses to Wofford and East Carolina ... At home versus the Terriers, GWU went 1-1 in singles play, losing the No. 3 match by default to put itself in a tough spot entering singles play ... Senior ERICA WHITE picked up the lone singles win of the day for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, winning at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-1 over Sarah Evans for her fourth singles win of the season ... On the road against the Pirates, GWU again went 1-1 in doubles play, but was left with a tall task entering singles play after losing No. 3 doubles by default ... ECU carried the momentum into four singles wins to seal the match. LIBERTY The Lady Flames posted a perfect 2-0 week, winning their Big South opener on Wednesday versus Longwood, 4-3, and capping the week with a 4-0 sweep of Morgan State ... Liberty captured the doubles point in each of the two matches for the first time this year ... Nicola Wellman paced the Lady Flames with a pair of wins in singles play, while BRITTANY YANG and JESSIE BODA posted wins in both of their doubles tilts for the week. LONGWOOD Longwood dropped its first-ever Big South Conference match at Liberty on February 20, falling 4-3 in a closely-played contest … The Lancers bounced back with a 4-0 victory past Morgan State on Feb. 23, another match played in Lynchburg … Sophomore MALIN ALLGURIN earned two wins in singles for the week, and was 1-1 in doubles during the two matches … Longwood will play three road matches this week, including at Elon University in a non-conference contest on March 1 before two league matches at Charleston Southern on March 2 and Coastal Carolina on March 4. PRESBYTERIAN The Blue Hose dropped their only match last week, falling to Appalachian State, 0-7 ... PC has fallen victim to the weather several times as the Blue Hose have seen three matches rescheduled so far ... Five players have a team-leading three wins on the season in PATRICIA ALVES, CAROLINE DELOACH, HALEY ELLIOTT, LINDSAY KRAUSE and LUCIA LEAHY ... The duo of deLoach and Kayla Stanford leads doubles with a 4-2 record ... PC opens conference play this Thursday against Winthrop at 2 p.m. RADFORD Radford nearly pulled off its first win of the season when the Highlanders traveled to Montclair Country Club to take on George Mason ... The Patriots prevailed in the end, however, 4-3 ... RU won the doubles point for the first time this season by claiming victories at No. 1 and 3 doubles ... GEMMA VALLS moved to 2-2 on the dual season with a win at the top flight and ALLISON MICHAEL triumphed in her match at the sixth slot, but Mason got wins at Nos. 2-5 singles to rally in the end ... Against Elon, the Phoenix swept all nine matches en route to the 7-0 decision over the Highlanders ... Elon is on an eight-match winning streak, which is tied for the longest streak since the program made the transition to Division I. UNC ASHEVILLE UNC Asheville picked up a great road won on Sunday as the Bulldogs edged Wofford, 4-3 ... Asheville earned the win with two three-set singles victories from CHRISTINA BOISSEVAIN and AMRYN SOLIDER ... Both lost the first set but roared back to win the match ... Asheville is at Charlotte on Saturday. WINTHROP The Winthrop Women’s Tennis team took two of three this past weekend ... The Lady Eagles lost a tough match in Raleigh, NC 3-4 against nationally ranked NC State ... The match came down to the final singles match with freshman TIJANA UZELAC losing to NC State’s Chloe Smith, 2-6, 7-5, 4-6 in the No. 6 position ... The Lady Eagles to win their singles matches were freshman ALICE GARCIA at No. 3 singles, No. 2 singles with junior ANDRESSA GARCIA, and in No. 5 singles with freshman CAITLIN CRIDLAND ... On Saturday, the Lady Eagles beat Lousiville 6-1. The Lady Eagles claimed the doubles point, No. 1 singles with #107 YASMINE ALKEMA, ALICE GARCIA No. 3 singles, senior GIOVANNA PORTIOLI at No. 4, CAILTIN CRIDLAND at the No. 5 spot, and sophomore EKIN GUNAYSU at No. 6 singles ... On Sunday, the Lady Eagles swept Furman 7-0 ... A few notable wins were #107 Alkema’s win over #110 Lauren Kline 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (3) and Alice Garcia’s come from behind win over Michele Stanford 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (8) ... Garcia was down 1-4 in the second set before prevailing to a 7-6 win ...
