Project Details
The FFA Vessel Monitoring System covers over 30 million square miles of fishing territories.
The FFA Vessel Monitoring System covers the South Pacific, encompassing almost 50% of the world’s open ocean, and operates as a joint surveillance monitoring center for 14 countries. Vessels report, on average, once per hour. The system uses Inmarsat-C predominantly, with Iridium and IsatM2M equipment also supported. Commencing in 2010, the system has been enhanced with the Fleet Information System (FIS), a sophisticated web based application for shipowners, flag administrations, FFA staff and member countries. FIS provides an electronic replacement for the paper forms previously used to register ships. Security & Confidentiality of information are key contract requirements, with the system operating under equivalent standards to those imposed on Sensitive but Unclassified (SBU) government computer systems.
