MISERICORDIA UNIVERSITY PROFILE Founded in 1924, Misericordia University is a liberal arts based, co-educational Catholic institution that is sponsored by the religious Sisters of Mercy. One of 18 Mercy institutions in the United States, Misericordia welcomes individuals from all faiths while offering a variety of liberal arts and professional programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The athletics facilities at Misericordia University recently underwent major renovations which provide MU’s student athletes with some of the finest competition venues in the region.

Football players volunteer annually at first year move in day Misericordia is dedicated to the values of the Sisters of Mercy: mercy, service, justice and hospitality. All students live these values by engaging in service projects and volunteer opportunities at home and abroad on trips to Guyana, Jamaica and various communities throughout the world. Located in Dallas, PA, Misericordia’s 123-acre campus has a suburban atmosphere, 9 miles from Wilkes-Barre and 2 hours from Philadelphia and New York City.

Cougar Statue in front of Anderson Center The facilities – all located on campus – include the Anderson Center, Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletics Complex, Tambur Field, Metz Field House, McGeehan Field, Anderson Softball Field and six tennis courts. The Anderson Center features a six-lane swimming pool, indoor track, racquetball courts, fitness center and an aerobic dance studio. Named for the late Dr. Robert S. and Geraldine Ruth Daley Anderson, the Anderson Sports-Health Center, The outdoor complex and fields are all tributes to their commitment to Misericordia and its values. Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Athletic Complex was constructed in 2002 and serves as a home for the football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and track & field programs. Mangelsdorf Field honors the dedication of Jack and Dorothy Mangelsdorf to Misericordia and the region. McGeehan field, the second turf field on campus is named in honor of Mary Ellen McGeehan (’46) was built in 2012 followed by the building of Tambur Field in 2013 (Baseball) recognizing the Robert Tambur family.

Misericordia University’s 25 varsity sports compete at the Division III level of the NCAA and the Middle Atlantic Conference. Since joining the Division III ranks in 1992, the Cougars have captured 54 conference championships and sent 30 teams to the NCAA championships.

John and Mary Metz Fieldhouse constructed in 2012, is home to football’s locker room, weight room, training room, equipment room and team meeting rooms. The 21,750 square foot facility is named for and recognizes long time trustee member John Metz and his wife Mary.

Misericordia values balance between academics and athletics by maintaining an exceptional student-athlete cumulative GPA of a 3.27 and recognizing 399 student-athletes on the MAC Academic Honor Roll team in 2016-17. MU offers 37 majors in three academic colleges: Arts and Sciences, Health Sciences, Professional Studies and Social Sciences. With a total enrolment of 3,065 students, including 1,898 full time, Misericordia offers the benefits of a small university with the scope of a larger institution. Misericordia has an average class size of 19 students and a 11:1 student to faculty ratio, which ensures personalized attention and allows students and faculty to really get to know each other. Thomas J. Botzman, Ph.D., is in his fifth year as president of Misericordia University. The 13th president in Misericordia history, Dr. Botzman previously served as vice president for business and finance at St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he was also a professor of economics. In his first four years at Misericordia, the Cougars won 13 MAC Freedom championships and sent 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, Ashlee Ward won the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor High Jump championships and Juwan PettiesJackson won the Indoor 200m title. At St. Mary’s, Dr. Botzman was interim vice president for development and secretary to the Board of Trustees during the 2009-10 academic year. Dr. Botzman previously served for 15 years as a member of the faculty at the University of Mount Union (OH) where he held the posts of associate academic dean and director of international studies. Selected as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow, Dr. Botzman was recognized as an emerging leader in higher education and had the opportunity to participate in ACE’s highly regarded leadership and mentoring program. In addition to his experience in academia, Dr. Botzman worked in industry and holds 12 U.S. patents.

CHUCK EDKINS, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Chuck Edkins is in his 27th year at

Misericordia University and his third year as director of athletics. He previously spent 25 years as head men’s soccer coach and served 13 years as associate AD and head baseball coach at Misericordia. In 25 seasons, he led the MU men’s soccer team to 21 post-season appearances and a 283-159-35 record.

Misericordia won seven conference championships, including four MAC Freedom titles, and made six trips to the NCAA Tournament. Under Edkins, Misericordia won three Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championships and made 10 trips to the PAC finals - more than any other school. The 2000 PAC championship squad became the first team in Misericordia history to earn an NCAA Championships bid. Edkins guided the Cougars to seven appearances in the ECAC championships, including titles in 2002 and 2014 A four-time PAC Coach-of-the-Year recipient, Edkins holds an NSCAA Advanced National coaching license. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from SUNY-Cortland.

MARK ROSS Head Coach [email protected] 570-674-1228 Mark Ross is in his sixth year as head football coach at Misericordia University. A native of Athens, PA, Ross was hired as the first coach in the history of the program in February, 2011. A year ago, he guided the Cougars to a win for the fourth straight season. Ross spent the previous 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ithaca College and has also coached at East Stroudsburg. At Ithaca, he served as the Bombers’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach since 2007 and previously coached linebackers, defensive line and place-kickers. A graduate of Penn State with a degree in secondary education, Ross spent four seasons as an assistant coach at East Stroudsburg, where he earned a master’s in sport management.

MIKE HATCHER Offensive Coordinator/QBs [email protected] 570-674-1445 Mike Hatcher is in his sixth season as offensive coordinator at Misericordia University. A graduate of Rhodes College (TN), Hatcher serves as the quarterbacks coach and is the assistant coordinator of athletics operations. Hatcher spent two seasons at Ithaca where he served as the primary offensive play caller and was also responsible for scouting reports and game planning. He spent the previous three seasons as the wide receiver/assistant quarterbacks coach for the Bombers. A native of Houston, TX, Hatcher was a four-year letterman as a wide receiver at Rhodes, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.

BRENDAN WALSH Offensive Line/ Strength and Conditioning [email protected] 570-674-1872 Brendan Walsh is in his second season as the offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach at Misericordia University. A graduate of Colgate University, Walsh was a three-year letterman and started at center for the 2012 Patriot League champions that ranked fourth in FCS total offense. After serving one as a student assistant at Colgate, he spent one season as the tight ends/assistant offensive line coach at Susquehanna.

JOHN WHITELAVICH Linebackers John Whitelavich is in his third season as an assistant football coach at Misericordia University where he coaches the defensive line. He owns more than 40 years of football coaching experience at the high school, collegiate and semi-professional levels. In addition to serving as an assistant coach at several area high schools, he was the head coach at North Pocono and Lakeland and was an assistant head coach with the Scranton Eagles. Whitelavich earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from East Stroudsburg University and spent 32 years as a physical education teacher at North Pocono.

JOE ZABIELSKI Defensive Line Joe Zabielski is in his second season as an assistant football coach at Misericordia University where he will coach the defensive line. He was a three-year starter at tight end and punter at Bucknell after starring in four sports at Old Forge High school. Zabielski spent three seasons at Wilkes University and has coached at numerous area high schools. He currently serves as a math teacher in the Valley View School District.

SAM JOHNSON Graduate Assistant/Offense [email protected] 570-674-8303 Sam Johnson is in his first season as a graduate assistant football coach at Misericordia University. He is a 2017 graduate of Misericordia where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Government, Law, and National Security. During his time with the Cougars, Johnson was a key contributor to the offensive line, starting 28 games in his career. He was an honorable mention All-MAC team selection for the offensive line after his senior season. BEN CREGGER Graduate Assistant/Defense [email protected] 570-674-8320 Ben Cregger is in his first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Misericordia University football team. A graduate of Kutztown University, he was a three-year starter at center for the Golden Bears while earning his bachelor’s in sport anagement. After his senior season, Cregger was named All-PSAC East First Team and All-Region Second Team at center, as well as an Honorable Mention All-American by the Don Hansen Gazette. During the spring of 2017, he spent his time as an intern coach for Kutztown, where he assisted with the offensive line and tight ends. CHRIS HUTTER Student Assistant Coach Chris Hutter is in his first year as a member of the Misericordia University football coaching staff. He is serving as an assistant linebackers coach. Hutter was a four-year letterman for the Cougars at linebacker.

JAMES WERNER Interim Equipment Manager James Werner is the interim equipment manager at Misericordia University. He spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for the Misericordia football team. He is a graduate of Salve Regina University where he earned a degree in economics. During his time at Salve Regina, Werner played defensive tackle for three seasons before spending the final season as a student coach due to injuries. Previously, Werner served as a part-time defensive line coach at Castleton State College. He was also an assistant coach at SUNY Maritime College where he was the running backs coach, academic coordinator, video coordinator and strength and conditioning coach. MARK MCMASTER Student Assistant Coach Mark McMaster is in his first year as a member of the Misericordia University football coaching staff. He is serving as an assistant wide receivers coach. McMaster played in 20 games over two seasons with the Cougars. He had 31 catches for 345 yards as a first-year player and added 13 catches for 222 yards as a sophomore. He had two TD’s as a sophomore, including a 56-yarder against Wilkes. McMaster is completing his degree in sport management. MITCHELL WASIK Athletic Trainer Mitch Wasik is in his first year as a member of the Misericordia University athletics training staff. He owns more than 20 years of athletics training experience, including the last two seasons at nearby Wilkes. Previously, Wasik served as the cohead athletic trainer at Indiana State University for four years after a year as an assistant trainer at Indiana State.

He made a career-high 20 tackles in four games as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending injury. He missed his senior season due to injury.

Before his time at Indiana State, Wasik spent eleven years as head athletic trainer at San Francisco State University from 1998-2009.

Hutter is a nursing student at Misericordia.

Wasik earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training from California State University in 1992 before obtaining his master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences/Athletic Training from the University of Arizona in 1994.
