2013 BIG SOUTH PRESEASON FOOTBALL NOTES & INFORMATION COASTAL CAROLINA PICKED TO WIN IT ALL IN 2013 For the first time since the 2006 season, defending Conference co-champion Coastal Carolina University has been tabbed the favorite in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason football poll for the 2013 campaign, as voted by the League’s head coaches and media panel. The Chanticleers have won or shared five Big South titles since the program’s first season in 2003. See page 82 for the Big South’s preseason poll history. COASTAL’S HAZEL TABBED PRESEASON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Coastal Carolina senior wide receiver MATT HAZEL has been voted the Big South’s 2013 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Just the second wide receiver to receive the Conference’s preseason honor, Hazel is a two-time All-Big South pick (First-Team in 2012 and Second-Team in 2011). Last season, he tied the Coastal Carolina single-season record with 61 receptions and finished with 799 receiving yards (second on the CCU all-time list) with eight touchdowns. His eight TD catches were second in the Big South last season, while his total receptions, receiving yards and receiving yards per catch (13.1) ranked third among the League leaders. Hazel excelled in the FCS Playoffs, as he totaled 12 catches for 184 yards and three scores in two postseason games -- including nine receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns in the second round loss at Old Dominion. Hazel is also among the wide receivers on the 2013 College Football Performance Awards Watch List. CCU’S BACKUS PICKED AS PRESEASON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Coastal Carolina junior linebacker QUINN BACKUS, who has already been named a 2013 preseason All-American by The Sports Network, has been voted the 2013 Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. He was a near-unanimous selection with 14 of the 15 first-place votes and 29 points. The reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Year, Backus recorded a school-record 139 total tackles (69 solo, 70 assisted) in his first season as a starter last year -- the second-highest single-season total in Big South history, and finished 16th in FCS and second in the League with 10.69 tackles per games. He also tallied 8.0 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Backus was the only player in the nation ranked among the NCAA top 30 in tackles with at least 100 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 pass break-ups, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumbles recovered. BACK-TO-BACK FOR BACKUS?? Coastal Carolina and reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Year QUINN BACKUS enters this season looking to join elite company, as he will attempt to become just the third player in League history to win back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honors. The first was Gardner-Webb’s MARIO WILLIAMS (2002-03), followed by GWU’s BRIAN JOHNSTON (2006-07). COASTAL CAROLINA INCLUDED IN PRESEASON RANKINGS Defending Big South co-champion Coastal Carolina has received some attention this preseason, as the Chanticleers are ranked No. 21 in the FCS Coaches preseason poll and No. 25 in The Sports Network preseason ranking. In addition, the Chants were ranked No. 15 by Lindy’s. Coastal finished the 2012 season ranked No. 24 by both the FCS Coaches and The Sports Network in the final national polls. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS ONE Coastal Carolina and Liberty will meet this season in Lynchburg on Oct. 19 for the 11th time. The series is tied at 5-5, and the winner of the match-up has won or shared the Big South football Championship eight times. The Chanticleers won three-straight over Liberty from 2004-06 en route to three consecutive titles (two outright, one shared). The Flames were victorious from 2007-09 while winning three-straight Big South crowns (two outright, one shared). Coastal won last season’s meeting and both teams shared the title in 2012 as well as 2010. ONE FOR THE THUMB Having shared the 2012 Big South football championship, Coastal Carolina and Liberty are the only Big South programs to win/share five titles in League history. The Chanticleers’ five rings have occurred in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2012, while the Flames’ five have come in the last six years -- 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012. BIG SOUTH HAD SECOND THREE-WAY TIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP IN THREE YEARS For the second time in three seasons, the Big South had a three-way tie for firstplace in the Conference standings, as Coastal Carolina, Liberty and Stony Brook all finished 5-1 in the League in 2012. The Conference’s first three tiebreakers were not enough to break the three-way tie, therefore, the fourth step -- road Conference wins -- was the next procedure needed to break the three-way tie. Coastal Carolina finished 3-0 in road Big South games to secure the Conference’s automatic bid, while Liberty and Stony Brook were both 2-1.

CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD Excluding the Big South’s first year of football in 2002, Coastal Carolina head coach JOE MOGLIA and Liberty head coach TURNER GILL were the first head coaches in League history to win a Big South championship in his first season in the Big South. Meanwhile, Moglia was the first head coach to win at least seven games in his first season in the Conference. Since 2003, the previous high for most wins by a head coach in his first season in the League was six wins -- CAL McCOMBS (VMI) and DAVID BENNETT (Coastal Carolina) in 2003, and DANNY ROCCO (Liberty) in 2006. TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE The Big South had two teams in the FCS Playoffs last season for the first time in the Conference’s football history, as 2012 co-champion Coastal Carolina claimed the League’s automatic bid, while co-champion Stony Brook received one of the 10 atlarge berths. Both squads won first round playoff games, and the Big South is now 3-5 all-time in FCS playoff games. In fact, Coastal and Stony Brook have combined to make all five of the League’s playoff appearances (CCU - 3, SBU - 2). BIG SOUTH WELCOMES TWO NEW COACHES IN 2013 For the second consecutive season, the Big South has two new head coaches on the sidelines. JAMEY CHADWELL takes over at Charleston Southern, while CARROLL McCRAY is now in charge of the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs. Chadwell is in his first season as a head coach at the FCS level. McCray, who succeeded Chadwell as North Greenville’s head coach, coached four seasons at Austin Peay from 2003-06 and also served as an assistant coach under VMI head coach SPARKY WOODS during his coaching career. BURNING UP THE HOUSE Liberty owns a Big South-record 18-game home Conference win streak, and swept its home Big South schedule for the sixth consecutive season in 2012. During this stretch, the Flames have scored 777 points (43.2 points per game), scored more than 30 points in 15 contests, and has held its League brethren to 335 points (18.6). The last Big South team to defeat Liberty inside Williams Stadium was GardnerWebb on Oct. 21, 2006 (27-24). The Flames host three Big South opponents in 2013 -- Coastal Carolina (Oct. 19), VMI (Nov. 2) and Presbyterian (Nov. 9). CHANTICLEERS CONTINUE BIG SOUTH’S SEASON-ENDING TRADITION Coastal Carolina closed out the 2012 regular-season with five consecutive wins, continuing a streak in the Big South that has occurred every year since the League’s first season in 2002 -- a minimum four-game win streak to finish the year. In 2011, Stony Brook rolled off eight-straight wins to end the regular-season. Prior to that, it was Coastal Carolina in 2010 (four consecutive wins); Charleston Southern in 2008 and 2009 (four); Liberty in 2007 (five); Coastal Carolina in 2006 (eight); Charleston Southern in 2005 (five); Coastal Carolina (eight) and Liberty (four) in 2004; Liberty in 2003 (four); and Gardner-Webb in 2002 (eight). COMINGS... AND GOINGS The Big South Conference will welcome MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY as an associate member in 2014. The Hawks will get an early taste of League play as they will play at Liberty in Week 2. Meanwhile, the Big South bid farewell to Stony Brook following the 2012 campaign, as the Seawolves ended their associate membership after five years to join the CAA. VMI is playing its final campaign in the Big South this season, as the Keydets are rejoining the Southern Conference next fall. CRAN-TASTIC Gardner-Webb TE SETH CRANFILL established the Big South single-season record for most receptions by a tight end with his 37 catches last season, bettering the old mark of 34 set by Coastal Carolina’s DAVID DURAN in 2010. Cranfill’s 366 receiving yards in 2012 were the second-most by a Big South tight end in a season, second only to Duran’s 472 three years ago. Against Samford on Sept. 15, Cranfill established a Big South single-game record for most catches by a tight end with nine. OCHO-QUATRO VMI QB ERIC KORDENBROCK has connected on four pass plays of at least 80 yards in his career -- the only QB in the Conference record books with more than two. Kordenbrock hooked-up with RB JABARI TURNER on an 81-yard swing pass catch and run Nov. 10 against The Citadel. It was the longest pass reception by a running back in Big South history. Two weeks earlier on Oct. 27, Kordenbrock had an 80yard touchdown pass play with WR JAMES ROGERS at Gardner-Webb. FB-YES The Big South will play five games against FBS opponents this season, and has recorded three FBS wins since the 2010 campaign -- including two victories in 2010. That year, the Big South was the only FCS AQ Conference with two FBS wins.

2013 PRESEASON FOOTBALL NOTES & INFORMATION BIG SOUTH CONTINUES PRESEASON TREND OF RANKED TEAMS Coastal Carolina’s appearance in the preseason Top 25 rankings marks the fourth consecutive year that a Big South member has opened the season as a nationallyranked program. In addition, the Big South has had a football squad ranked for 21 consecutive weeks, dating back to Week 9 of the 2011 campaign (Oct. 24). The Big South’s all-time week-by-week rankings appear on pages 120-122.

POINT OF ORDER Liberty owns the Big South record for most consecutive games with a point scored at 85. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb has not been shutout in its last 55 games, followed by VMI (31). Furthermore, Liberty is the Big South’s active leader for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 29, the fourth-longest streak in Big South history.

WOODWORKING Liberty QB and 2012 Big South Freshman of the Year JOSH WOODRUM threw for 1,966 passing yards last season -- the second-highest total for a freshman in Big South history and 11 yards shy of the Big South freshman record of 1,977 (CSU’S COLLIN DRAFTS in 2003). Since becoming Liberty’s starting quarterback Sept. 15 at Montana, Woodrum is 179-of-259 passing ( =69.1 percent) for 1,943 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine starts under center. He is 6-3 in that span with a 139.19 efficiency rating.

THE TWENTIES Coastal Carolina was the first team in Big South history to win five consecutive Conference games by at least 20 points last season, and the Chants carry that streak into this year. Coastal had a 27-point win over VMI in Week 8, followed by a 24-point victory over Liberty in Week 9. The Chanticleers defeated GardnerWebb by 22 points in Week 10, and won by 58 markers in Week 11 at Presbyterian College. CCU defeated Charleston Southern by 21 points in the season finale, concluding League play with a 30.4 average margin of victory in its five wins. The 58-point win over the Blue Hose gave the Chanticleers the top two largest margins of victory in a Big South game, as Coastal won by a record 67 points over Charleston Southern in the 2010 regular-season finale.

NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP Liberty QB and 2012 Big South Freshman of the Year JOSH WOODRUM is looking to continue the trend of impressive sophomore campaigns of previous Freshman of the Year honorees. Presbyterian LB and 2011 winner DONELLE WILLIAMS was third in the Big South last season with 103 tackles en route to Second-Team All-Conference honors. Gardner-Webb DE and 2010 honoree PRESTON PEMASA recorded 13.5 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks in his second year, and is a three-time All-Big South selection. MASTRO OF THE UNIVERSE Coastal Carolina senior NICCOLO MASTROMATTEO is the Big South’s all-time leader for punt returns (61) and punt return yards (538). He is the third player in Big South history with at least 100 combined kickoff/punt returns in a career, as he is third all-time with 108 (47 KR, 61 PR). He needs 20 returns to break the Conference record of 127, which is held by former VMI standout TIM MAYPRAY. Maypray returned 98 kickoffs and 29 punts in his career from 2006-09. Meanwhile, Mastromatteo is the only player in the Conference record books with two punt returns of at least 80 yards. MEMBERS ONLY Junior linebackers QUINN BACKUS (Coastal Carolina) and DONELLE WILLIAMS (Presbyterian) will likely join the Big South’s 200-tackle club early in the 2013 season. Williams enters the season with 186 career stops, while Backus is at 170. The club currently stands at 37 members. CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE WON IN NOVEMBER Five-time champ Liberty is 24-9 ( =72.7 percent) since 2002 during the month of November, while five-time champion Coastal Carolina is 25-6 ( =80.6) in its history in regular-season games in November. In fact, the Chanticleers are the only Big South member to win a game in November every season since 2003. PRESS ON Gardner-Webb senior DE PRESTON PEMASA is tied for 10th in Big South history with 12.5 quarterback sacks. He is also fifth in the Conference record books with 35.0 career tackles-for-loss. Pemasa needs 3.5 TFL to move into second in League history and 5.0 sacks to move into second in that category. Former Gardner-Webb DE BRIAN JOHNSTON is the all-time leader for both statistics with 53.5 TFL and 20.5 sacks. FOGG ALERT Liberty redshirt-senior KEVIN FOGG is tied as the all-time leader for most kickoff return touchdowns with three. Coupled with his one career punt return score, Fogg is second in League history with four kick return TDs. He needs one to tie the all-time mark of five, set by former Liberty WR DOMINIC BOLDEN (3 KR, 2 PR) from 2005-08. TWO-POINT YIELD Coastal Carolina tallied a Big South-record six two-point conversions in 2012 (five rush and one pass). Punter AUSTIN CAIN rushed for three of the six. The previous season record was three, which was accomplished three times -- Gardner-Webb in 2002, Coastal Carolina in 2005 and Charleston Southern in 2008. EYES ON HAZEL Coastal Carolina senior WR MATT HAZEL enters the 2013 season as the Big South’s active career leader with 113 receptions (19th in League history), 1,563 receiving yards (21st) and 19 touchdowns (tied for 7th among receivers).

DOUBLED UP Liberty owns the Conference record for most consecutive Big South games scoring in double figures at 40. Meanwhile, the Flames have scored in all 52 of their Conference games since 2002, while VMI has tallied points in all 49 of its League contests since joining the Big South in 2003. Presbyterian College is the final Conference member to have not been shut out in a League contest (24 games). RETURN ON INVESTMENT Coastal Carolina rushed for more than 200 yards in a school-record seven-straight games last year and averaged 261.6 yards on the ground in that span. The Chanticleers’ previous record was five consecutive 200-yard rushing games in 2004. Coastal has rushed for more than 200 yards in a game 50 times in its history (including a season-record nine times in 2004) and is 45-5 in those contests. POLL POSITION Last season, the Big South had two teams ranked in the final Top 25 national polls for the second consecutive year and third time overall in League history. Stony Brook was ranked No. 11 in the final Sports Network poll and No. 12 in the final FCS Coaches ranking. Coastal Carolina was No. 24 in both final polls. BIG MEN ON CAMPUS The six Big South Conference football members have a total of 43 players on its collective rosters weighing at least 300 lbs. Liberty has the most with 11, followed by Coastal Carolina with 10. Last season, the Big South -- with seven teams -- had 44 players at the 300-pound threshold. THE TALL AND SHORT OF IT The Big South has four players this season who are the tallest in the Conference at 6-8 -- Charleston Southern TE NATHAN PRATER, Coastal Carolina OL JOE KALETA and VMI OL mates ANDY MARCOTTE and JOE KLUCKOWSKI. Coastal Carolina’s JAMEY CHEATWOOD is the heaviest player at 330 Ibs. On the lighter side, the shortest player stands at 5-5 -- Charleston Southern RB ANTHONY SIMMONS, while Charleston Southern DB RAY ROWE, Coastal Carolina DB DEVIN BROWN and Gardner-Webb DB TIKO THOMPSON all weigh the least at 155 pounds.
