User Instructions Safety & Preparation The following checks or adjustments should be carried out if the Javelin does not appear to be cutting within the straightness tolerance of ±0.2mm or the Practik within ± 1mm. There are a number of situations that can exist which may affect the straightness of the cut, further details of each are given below, it is essential that each item is carried out in the sequence as listed. Should you find a problem at any point as you progress through the sequence try test cutting some material, if unsuccessful return to the sequence at the point you left it. The following instructions refer to both the Javelin/Practik Instructions and the BIG Bench Instructions if they cannot be located a copy is available online at www.keencut.co.uk.

1

THE BLADE MUST BE CLOSELY CONTROLLED OR IT CAN MOVE OR BEND SIDEWAYS. Check the blade depth is set correctly..... Adjust the blade depth as shown in the ‘Javelin/Practik Instructions’ so that only the very tip of the blade is going through the material when the head is fully depressed. There is a lot of pressure exerted on the blade to deflect it sideways if the blade is too long it reduces its’ rigidity. Check that the cutting head is not loose..... There should be no loose side play, grip the cutting head firmly and twist it from side to side if there is any evidence of side play refer to the ‘Javelin/Practik Instructions’ which shows how to adjust the sliding bearings.

THE MATERIAL MUST BE CLAMPED FULLY ALONG ITS CUT LENGTH. Carry out the ‘paper test’..... Carry out the test as shown in the ‘BIG bench Instructions’, page 3.5 item 8. If the material is not clamped along its whole length it can be pushed sideways as the blade passes and produce a wavy or bowed cut. The ‘BIG Bench Instructions’ explain how to make adjustments and ‘shim’ the bench to ensure good clamping along the length of the cutter, more detailed advice on leveling is given below: Leveling the bench..... It is important that the bench is level and flat along the length of the bench and from front to back. Using a good spirit level at least 30cm (12") long, check the levels and make adjustments using the leveling feet on each leg as below: Place spirit level in position 1 and adjust leg A as necessary.

The bench should now be level, as a double check place the spirit level in positions 4, if it is not level go through the sequence again to fine tune it.

User Instructions Preparation & Use

Is the blade touching the side of the groove in the BIG bench..... If so, check if the lift & hold devices fixed to each end can be adjusted any further (using the three slotted holes/fixing screws) as shown on page 3.4 item 6 in the ‘BIG Bench Instructions’ Inspect the underside of the Javelin..... Turn the Javelin over and look for any debris stuck to its underside, also check that the silicon grippers are fully retained in their grooves (particularly at their ends) and not frayed or damaged (if so request replacements from Keencut. Should you find anything, rectify it and retry the ‘paper test’. Is the bench assembled correctly..... Check that the top of the legs under the aluminium extrusion that run along the edge of the bench (‘Bench Edge Extrusion’) are not proud of the horizontal beams. If they are they can induce a dip in the Bench Edge extrusion when it is fixed into position. If there is a small discrepancy this may be able to be overcome by shimming between the extrusion and the adjacent horizontal beam at the point of each fixing bracket. Are all the leg to beam brackets the correct way round ….. Check that the brackets that join the horizontal beams to the legs are tight and the correct way round, when looking through the gap in the beam the face of the bracket should be flat. If it is stepped the bracket has been fitted incorrectly, dismantle that part of the bench and refit correctly. Just one wrong bracket can induce a twist in the bench making it difficult to align. Check the alignment of the front legs of the bench (6 legged benches only)..... The front legs of the bench should be in line with each other, pull a string tight across the front of the two end legs and check that the middle leg is in the correct position, if not push one end of the bench forward or backward to align it. Retry the ‘paper test’.

IS THE JAVELIN OR THE BENCH EDGE EXTRUSION STRAIGHT. Do the ‘Tape Test’..... Stick a length of thin adhesive tape onto a smooth table surface or board, ideally as long as the cutter. Place the Javelin to cut down the centre of the tape. Without applying any pressure onto the straightedge part of the cutter run the blade lightly down the tape to part it. Turn the cutter around to face the other way and position it on the tape and cut the tape in the same way about 1mm (1/16") away from the original. The centre piece of tape should be parallel, if it is not it will show any errors doubled. So if the tape is 1mm (1/32") wider in the middle than at both ends the cutter will be out by 0.5mm (1/64"). Should it be outside the advertised tolerance contact Keencut. What’s left..... If the cutter has given the impression of not cutting straight in relation to the Bench Edge Extrusion and the Javelin has passed the ‘Tape Test’, the Bench Edge Extrusion itself may be bent and affecting the path of the blade, if so contact Keencut.
