Hi Mr. Sellers, Flu season is just around the corner and in just a few weeks Purdue students will be at increased risk of developing an upper respiratory infection. Of the approximately 40,000 students currently on campus: • 36,000 (91%), yes I said 91%, will become sick with an upper respiratory infection • 33,000 (83%) of the students will develop a cold • 16,000 (36%) will become ill with influenza Research has shown that the combined effects of these illnesses result in • About 6,000 days in bed • 17,000 days with a significant decrease in the ability to perform daily activities • About 4,200 days of missed class As you likely know, flu shots can significantly diminish these numbers and contribute to keeping students healthy and in class. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has reported, “Influenza vaccination was associated with substantial reductions in influenza like illness and influenza like illness-associated health care use and impairment of school performance. College and university students can experience substantial benefits from influenza vaccinations” (Nichol, et al, 2008). I noticed that you are planning to feature wellness on campus for the month of October. Please consider highlighting the Purdue University Student Health Center (PUSH) in this issue. PUSH offers many valuable resources to students and their spouses including: • Flu shots at a, below market price • Educational materials that inform students about ways to guard against upper respiratory illness • Educational materials that inform students about ways to prevent spreading the illness if you are already ill • Treatment for students who are ill The student health center is located right in the heart of student activity with the mission of treating our students with Big 10 quality care for any of their healthcare needs. During flu season it is especially important to make sure our students are educated about prevention and the importance of flu shots and hygiene practices. Enclosed is an info graphic that I think you will find helpful. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
