ICE HOCKEY Kevin Cooper — Director of Hockey, Midget Prep Head Coach Kevin Cooper earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Middlebury College. At Middlebury, he was a three time AllAmerican, the school’s all-time leading goal scorer and was named the National Player of the Year in 2004. Mr. Cooper also broke the modern day goal scoring record with his 99th goal in his very last game of his college career. Following his collegiate career, Mr. Cooper played eight seasons of professional hockey, including a brief stint with the Providence Bruins of the AHL. Most of his career was spent in the ECHL, CHL and other leagues across the United States, but his playing career reached as far as Sweden, Finland and Germany. Mr. Cooper moved on to work at Bridgton Academy in Maine, where he balanced several roles including Admissions Counselor, Student Adviser and Associate Head Hockey Coach. Thanks to an expansive network that extends from Division I to Division III coaches, he has successfully helped place more than twenty players to various leagues within the college hockey ranks.

Carly Haggard — Female Varsity Head Coach Carly Haggard attended Dartmouth College, where she was a two-time finalist for the prestigious Patty Kazmaeir Memorial Award, presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. She was also named Dartmouth’s Female Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Ivy League and ECAC Player of the Year, and named to the All-American Team. During her university career, Ms. Haggard also represented Canada for three years with the U22 National Team. After graduation, Ms. Haggard played for the Oakville Ice in the National Women’s Hockey League. She then played in Lugano, Switzerland, where she was twice named the league’s MVP. She led her team to two league championships and two appearances at the European Cup championships. In 2003, Ms. Haggard attended the PASS Female Hockey School to develop her coaching skills. She trained and mentored girls of all ages and levels in their hockey careers. Many of these young players went on to play college hockey. Ms. Haggard has become a full-time coach after retiring from her playing career. She was the assistant head coach for the University of Guelph women’s hockey team before taking over as the head coach for the 2011-12 season.

Jeff Compton — Midget Prep Coach Since 2014, Jeff Compton has been the Assistant Hockey Director at Shawnigan, where he also serves as an assistant coach, skills coach and fitness coach. While earning his B.Sc. in human performance, Mr. Compton played five seasons with the University of Ottawa Gee Gees. He went on to complete his master’s degree at the University of Victoria, where he researched how various warm-up strategies affect icehockey skating performance. Known for his skating expertise, Mr. Compton has consulted and worked with several NHL teams including the Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets and the New York Rangers. For 15 seasons, he was the fitness coordinator for BC Hockey’s High Performance Men’s programs, and also co-authored the HP1 and HP2 course curriculum for Hockey Canada. When he’s not coaching the students at Shawnigan, Mr. Compton works with the WHL’s Victoria Royals as the team’s skills and conditioning coach. He also consults professional teams and youth programs in Europe, including the lone Hungarian team in the Austrian EBEL league. He has two books currently in print: the bestseller, Ball Bearings: The Complete Illustrated Guide to Swiss Ball Training, and Be Your Best Hockey Training Manual.

James Gaertner — Midget Varsity Gold Head Coach James Gaertner has been an assistant coach for two major Midget teams, two BCHL teams and various minor hockey teams in Vancouver and Victoria. He coached the Victoria Grizzlies to a BCHL Island Division Championship. Mr. Gaertner coaches and evaluates for the BC high performance U15, U16 and U17 programs, as well as Team Pacific U17. He also coaches the University of Victoria Vikes Men’s Hockey Team. Having a background in goaltending, he has worked with several NCAA and Junior-level goaltenders including three NHL draft picks. At the Midget level, Mr. Gaertner has reached the league finals in four out of six years, including winning the CSSHL Varsity Championship in the 2015-16 season with Shawnigan.

Paul Morris — Midget Prep Coach Embarking on his 15th year at Shawnigan as a full-time coach and teacher, Mr. Morris has extensive coaching experience at the School. He has earned NCCP credentials Levels 1 & 2 in both rugby and rowing, and Level 1 in squash. Mr. Morris’ ice hockey qualifications include HCSP (safety), HCOP levels 1 & 2 (officiating), along with Hockey Canada Coach 1 & 2 and Development 1. He directed, managed and co-coached the senior and junior ice hockey teams at Shawnigan for eight seasons, and he is elated by the continued evolution of the program. The continued development of young people lies at the intersection of both his coaching and educational philosophies. Optimal performance stems from individual engagement, respect for others and effective decision making — all of which Mr. Morris experienced as a student athlete at the University Waterloo.

Brian Passmore — Bantam Prep Head Coach As a player, Mr. Passmore spent four successful seasons in the OHL with the Plymouth Whalers, Oshawa Generals and Guelph Storm. In 2000, he was drafted 199th overall by the Minnesota Wild. From 2002-2009, Mr. Passmore played professionally in the ECHL and in Europe. Influenced by playing for coaches like Peter DeBoer (current head coach of the San Jose Sharks) and Steve Spott (current assistant coach of the San Jose Sharks), Mr. Passmore began his coaching career in 2009. He has coached at the Bantam, Midget and Jr. B levels, and was named the VIJHL Coach of the Year in 2014. Mr. Passmore’s goal is to build an intense, fast-paced Bantam Prep team. More importantly, he teaches students good habits, passion and respect for the game of hockey.

Dwayne Roloson — Midget Varsity Coach Dwayne Roloson graduated from University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he was named NCAA First Team all star, NCAA Hobey Baker finalist and Hockey East Player of the Year. Mr. Roloson played more than 600 games in the NHL with the Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning. As a member of the Minnesota Wild, he was selected for the All-Star Game and won the Rodger Crozier Award for Highest Save Percentage in 2003-2004. During his NHL career, he played or coached in two Stanley Cup finals and four Stanley Cup conference finals. He represented Canada at three World Championships, winning medals in each tournament: bronze (1995), gold (2007) and silver (2009). Mr. Roloson began his coaching career in 1990. He established and became part-owner of Roloson Mason Goalie Schools in 2004, then Roloson Goaltender Development in 2012. He has coached with the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals and the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. In 2016, he coached Frederick Anderson and John Gibson to a William M. Jennings Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL goalie(s) with the fewest goals scored against during regular-season play.

James Pollock — Midget Varsity Head Coach James Pollock brings more than 19 years of professional hockey experience to Shawnigan Lake School. In his first two years coaching at the School, he has been a part of two championship winning teams. At 16, Mr. Pollock moved to Seattle to play in the WHL, where he spent four years. At the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, he was drafted in the 4th round by the St. Louis Blues. His professional career took him to the NHL, the Swiss Elite League, the DEL in Germany and the KHL in Russia. A defenceman known for his shooting and skating ability, Mr. Pollock still holds the DEL goal scoring record for defencemen. He has played a key part on Team Canada, winning the 2003 Spengler Cup and the 2007 World Championships. Mr. Pollock has many stories to tell and experiences to share. He challenges his players to set their lofty goals, to never give up and to have fun while making lifelong friends.
