South Africa started this competition with an impressive 97-0 win over the USA and finished top of their pool unbeaten with wins over England (31-24) and France (26-19). They scored 154 points and 22 tries in their three pool games, conceding 43 points. Their semi-final opponents, Wales, stole victory from the Junior Springboks with a last minute try by Ashley Evans to win 18-17, to send South Africa into the third place playoff for the fourth time in this competition. New Zealand started this year’s competition as they have so many others, handing out a 59-6 beating to Fiji. Next came a close 14-10 victory against Australia, before beating Ireland 31-26 in their final game in the pool stages, thereby ensuring their place in the semi-final top of their group. A surprising 33-21 loss to England in the semi-finals set New Zealand up for a third place play-off match against last year’s champions South Africa.
