Headlines:

• • • •

This will be the first time that Scotland and Argentina have met at the IRB Junior World Championships. 10 of Scotland’s starting line up have started every match in the tournament so far, more than any other team. Scotland captain DUNCAN WEIR has scored 80 points in total in the IRB Junior World Championships, which puts him in fifth position on the all time list. Scotland wing KERR GOSSMAN is the only player on either side who has scored more than one try in the IRB Junior World Championships.

Match summary:

• •

Scotland finished bottom of Pool C with no points after losing all three matches but ensured their place in next year’s IRB Junior World Championships with a convincing 30-11 win over Tonga. Argentina finished third in Pool A and joined the three bottom teams in the play off semi finals for ninth place. They beat Italy for the second time in the tournament with a narrow 12-8 victory thanks to four penalty goals by BRIAN ORMSON, who starts on the replacements bench on Sunday.

Team news:

• •

Scotland have named an unchanged team from the side that started against Tonga, which means that no fewer than 10 of their starting line up will have started all five matches in the tournament. By contrast, Argentina have made nine changes to their starting line up from the team that beat Italy. The only players to retain their places are lock CESAR FRUTTERO, number eight MARTIN IGNES, scrum half RAMIRO BARONIO, centres MATIAS ORLANDO and JERONIMO De La FUENTE and MANUEL MONTERO, who moves to full back from the wing and is the only player in the Argentina side that has started in every match.

Argentina finished eighth in 2008, 11th in 2009 and sixth in 2010, when they hosted the tournament. Have won three of the seven matches played in the Play off stages, beating Fiji in 2009 and Wales in a penalty shoot out last year before Wednesday’s 12-8 win over Italy. Kicked four drop goals in total, the joint highest of any team alongside South Africa.

There is very little to choose between the two sides on age, height or weight.

The tall guys

Scotland second row forward ROBERT McALPINE is the tallest man on the pitch at 200 cm (6ft 6ins) and stands two cm above Argentina’s twin peaks of CESAR FRUTTERO and JUAN CRUZ GUILLEMAIN.

The heavyweight division

• •

The combined weight of the Argentina pack is 836 kg, which gives them a 10 kg advantage over Scotland in the scrum. Argentina’s tighthead prop JONATHAN MARCHETTA is the heaviest man on the pitch at 125 kg (19st 10lb) and has a 12 kg advantage over his opposite number, COLIN PHILLIPS, who is Scotland’s heaviest player.

History

This will be the first time that Scotland and Argentina have met at the IRB Junior World Championships.

Experience

• • •

Scotland have three players in the starting line up with previous experience in the Junior World Championships; prop COLIN PHILLIPS and lock forward ROBERT McALPINE each started one match and captain DUNCAN WEIR played in four matches and kicked 46 points, including eight conversions from nine attempts. Scotland came into this tournament having finished bottom of the 2010 Under 20 Six Nations Championships earlier this year, losing all five matches played and scoring just 23 points in total. Seven of the players in their starting line up appeared in all five of those defeats. Full back MANUEL MONTERO is the only one of Argentina’s starting line up that played in the 2010 IRB Junior World Championships, where he started four matches.

Top five points scorer

Scotland captain DUNCAN WEIR has scored 80 points in total in the IRB Junior World Championships, which puts him in fifth position on the all time list. Only three players have reached 100 points and he is just two points behind fourth placed New Zealander TYLER BLEYENDAAL.

Sole man

Scotland wing KERR GOSSMAN is the only player on the pitch who has scored more than one try in the IRB Junior World Championships, having crossed the line against both England and Tonga.

Birthday boy

Scotland full back STUART HOGG celebrated his 20th birthday on Friday.

The man in the middle

MATHIEU RAYNAL of France takes charge of this match, his fourth in IRB Junior World Championship competition and his third involving Scotland, who lost 33-0 to South Africa in the first round of Pool matches but beat Tonga 30-11 on Wednesday. He also officiated in Argentina’s 27-3 win over Italy in the Pool stages, showing a yellow card to NAHUEL LOBO, who starts on the replacements bench this weekend.
