K-1st Grade
Small Group
Week 8
Get Their Attention! (3 minutes) Materials: None
WELCOME kids to FearBusters, and INTRODUCE yourself as their small group leader.
Need to Know: Take Action (ninja chop)
We are going to go around the circle. On your turn, tell us your name and something silly you’ve seen someone do when they were afraid (Ex: Run around screaming after seeing a spider.) INTRODUCE kids to what we are learning today:
And Don’t Let (shake head “no”)
Some of the things are very silly, but when we let our fears control us, we might do some crazy things!
Fear Control You! (walk like a robot)
The good news is that when we remember that God is in control, we can take action against our fears. That way, they won’t control us! That’s what we need to know today:
Bible Story: The Lord is My Shepherd & David the Hero Psalm 23 & 1 Samuel 17
Take Action (ninja chop) and Don’t Let (shake head “no”) Fear Control You (walk like a robot)!
___________________________________________________________ Bible Story (5 min)
Materials: God’s Story for Me Bible
Materials: God’s Story for Me Bible Coloring Sheets Crayons Memory Verse Prize (Wristbands) Simon Says Sheet Filler Guide
READ today’s “FearBusting Verse” (on left) to the group and then EXPLAIN: Today’s FearBusting Verse is a prayer that was written by a man named David. David did not let fear control him because He knew God was in control. Since David knew God was in control, he was able to take action when everyone else was afraid. God used David to do something amazing! READ p.171-176 from God’s Story for Me Bible (“David the Hero”). ASK: 1.
Why was everyone afraid of Goliath: because he was a giant or because he had a big mustache? (Because he was a giant, p.171-172)
2.
Did King Saul’s army take action against their fear or did they let their fear control them? (Let their fear control them)
3.
Was David afraid of Goliath? (No) Why not? (He knew God would help him)
4.
Since David knew God would help him, did he take action or let his fear control him? (Took action and defeated Goliath)
FearBusting Verse: “God is my shepherd. He gives me everything I need. He gives me good food and water. He shows me the right way to go. Even when I’m scared, I know He is with me and is taking care of me. God fills my life with good things, and I know I’ll live forever with Him.” Psalm 23
David knew that God would always be with him when he was afraid. Then, when David was faced with a situation that was scary, David took action because his fear did NOT control him! That’s what we need to know today (have kids repeat after you):
Take Action (ninja chop) and Don’t Let (shake head “no”) Fear Control You (walk like a robot)!
K-1st Grade Memory Verse: “I prayed to the Lord (make praying hands) And He answered me. (point up) He freed me from (wave arms) All my fears.” (make a scary face) Psalm 34:4 (hold up four fingers)

Week 8
Prayer & Memory Verse Reward (5 min)
Materials: Coloring Sheets, Crayons, Memory Verse Prize (Wristbands)
BEFORE reviewing Memory Verse, ASK kids to close their eyes & bow their heads. Model prayer for kids by PRAYING: Heavenly Father, thank you for always being with us and taking care of us when we are scared. Whenever we are afraid, help us to take action instead of letting our fear control us! We love you! Amen. REVIEW Memory Verse several times with the group. 1. Pass out coloring sheets and crayons. Allow kids to work on their coloring sheets while each child takes a turn saying the Memory Verse to you. 2. After a child says the Memory Verse by his/herself, reward the child with a Memory Verse Prize (Wristband). 3. Tell kids to wear this wristband to school to remember what to do when they are afraid (pray, trust, remember truth, and take action)!
___________________________________________________________ Application Activity Summary: Kids will play “Simon Says” and then answer questions to help them remember that they can take action against their fears!
Application Activity (5 min) Materials: Simon Says Sheet
AS time allows, play “Simon Says”: 1. Allow kids to stand up. 2. Read instructions from the Simon Says Sheet. Kids should ONLY obey the instructions if you say “Simon Says.” If you do not say “Simon Says,” and a child obeys the instructions, the child is out. 3. Play until there is only one child left or all the instructions from the Sheet are used. Then ask the questions at the bottom of the Simon Says Sheet. 4. Allow kids to take turns being Simon as time permits.
