Kingston Elementary 2018 Newsletter Dear Parents,

Calendar of Events

Spring is just around the corner and will be here before we know it. Please pay close attention to information being sent home about upcoming events and field trips that might be planned for your child. During March, our Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students will be preparing for the Oklahoma School Testing Program. Our students and teachers have been working very hard to master the Oklahoma Academic Standards. State testing will begin in April. Please stress to your children the importance of doing their best and learning the skills required to be successful. Parents please make sure your children are at school and in class on time each and every day. When students are late they miss valuable instruction time. Your support is greatly appreciated! We all must work together to achieve KES Team Success!!!

From the Nurse's Desk.... First, let me say that we are continuing to experience a head lice problem in the student population. The first line of defense for this problem is checking your kids at home. If you catch it at home before they come to school, it will not be a problem here at school. Please check your kids every evening when they get home, even if you think there is no way they could possibly have head lice. Anyone can get it at any time. It can be carried by people from out of town who are visiting, it can be picked up from the head rests on movie theater seats, it can be shared on coats, scarf's, hats, brushes, hair bows, stuffed toys, bedding, etc. Make sure you children know not to share their personal items with other kids. Here at the school, we are spraying and vacuuming rooms, disinfecting buses, and putting rugs and stuffed toys that are in the classrooms in plastic bags. It would help if you could send plastic bags for your child to put their hats, coats, and back pack in while they are hanging in the room. By working as a team, we can keep our children lice free. Thank you for your help! Nurse Monti Walker, RN

LIBRARY CORNER The members of our after-school Sequoyah Book Club are getting ready to vote for their favorite book from the Sequoyah masterlist. Members must have read at least 3 books from the masterlist to qualify to vote and all members have met the requirement. We will post our votes online by March 15th and the winner will be announced on March 31st on the Oklahoma Library Association’s website and in The Oklahoman. Fortunately, the author who won the Sequoyah Award last year, Louis Ruby, for her book The Doll Graveyard, will be able to attend the award presentation at the OLA Conference in Tulsa on April 23rd. Our book club plans to attend to hear to meet the author and hear her speak. We are very excited! More information will be sent home when we get closer to the date. I am happy to report the success our last Scholastic Book Fair. We had just slightly over $9000.00 in sales! The library receives a portion of that in cash profit and in books. The week prior to the fair, we held a sucker pull to allow students, for the price of 50 cents, a chance to win a gift certificate for a book from the fair. We were able to raise enough money to give out 74 gift certificates! Book fairs are one way for us to raise money to purchase new books and supplies for our library as well as put books into the hands of students. We couldn’t do it without the generous support of the wonderful parents and extended families we have here at Kingston Elementary. THANK YOU!!! Karen Thomas Elementary Library Media Specialist
