History is an important subject that helps us understand the world we live in. The topics studied will give students the chance to learn about a range of historical events, from around the world and from different periods of time. Students will learn about how governments and ordinary people have brought about change. AQA Paper 1: Understanding the modern world Topics: ● America 1840- 1895: Expansion and Consolidation ● Conflict and tension, 1990–2009

Paper 2: Shaping the nation Topics: ● Britain: Power and the people: c.1170 to the present day ● Elizabethan England, c.1568–1603 Assessment

All sections of the course are assessed in an exam at the end of year 11 Paper 1: Understanding the modern world ● 50% of GCSE ● 1 hour 45 minute exam Paper 2: Shaping the nation ● 50% of GCSE ● 1 hour 45 minute exam

Why study this subject / progression

History allows students to form an opinion and use evidence to justify their arguments. In addition students learn how to evaluate, make inferences, assess different arguments and improve their literacy skills. Further study of history could lead to careers in: law, police, education, accountancy, museum curating, archaeology, journalism, politics, civil service, publishing, broadcasting. Mr Heron
