Geography Brief overview

Geography helps to make sense of the world around you. Students learn about current issues the UK and wider world faces such as flood management and international aid. There are many ways students learn the subject including map skills, fieldwork, extended writing, data analysis and interpretation. Edexcel A

Subject content (including papers)

Paper 1: The physical environment 37.5% 1 hour 30 minutes Topic 1: The changing landscapes of the UK, rivers, coasts. Topic 2: Weather hazards and climate change. Topic 3: Ecosystems, biodiversity and management. Paper 2: The human environment 37.5% 1 hour 30 minutes Topic 1: Changing cities. Topic 2: Global development. Topic 3: Energy resource management. Paper 3: Geographical investigations: fieldwork and UK challenges 25% 1 hour 30 minutes Section A: Coast fieldwork. Section B: Urban fieldwork Section C: UK challenges.

Assessment

All sections of the course are assessed in an exam at the end of year 11 Paper 1: The physical environment 37.5% Paper 2: The human environment 37.5% Paper 3: Geographical investigations: fieldwork and UK challenges 25%

Why study this subject / progression

Geography helps to improve literacy and numeracy skills. In addition students learn how to reach justified conclusions and evaluate information which has cross curricular benefits.
