MEET NOTES PORTLAND, Ore. — After two weeks of teasing Viking fans with the potential of school records, the Portland State track & field delivered two back-to-back last Friday night at the UW Invitational in Seattle. Now the Vikings will look for more of that Friday magic as they compete at two meets Friday between the Idaho Duals in Moscow, Idaho, and the Cougar Indoor in Pullman, Wash. The Vikings, which saw Kaila Gibson and Alex Cisneros set the records in the women’s and men’s 5,000 meters at the UW Invite, will only send their men’s pole vaulters to the Cougar Indoor, while the rest of the team competes at the Idaho Duals. The school record in the men’s indoor pole vault has been the biggest tease of the season so far for the Vikings, as Keegan Winkle has come agonizingly close to breaking the record at his first three meets of the season. Winkle has made attempts at heights that would break the school record at every meet at which he’s competed, but has yet to record a clean attempt. Viktor Moen, meanwhile, has no heighted at his first two meets with the Vikings, but holds a personal best of 15-05.75 (4.72m) that’s just a foot lower than the school record of 15-06.75 (4.74m). Braden Masanga, who has been out with an injury but could make his season debut at the Cougar Indoor, also has a personal best of 4.72 meters and could challenge Winkle and Moen for the school record Friday. Redshirt junior multi-event athlete Donté Robinson is also entered in the men’s pole vault, but he will be competing more as practice for the upcoming Big Sky heptathlon in which he will be a favorite to take home the conference title in the event at the end of the month. Robinson hasn’t completed a heptathlon since the Vikings’ last competed at the Kibbie Dome for the Vandal Invitational and Multi Events at the beginning of the season, but leads the Big Sky by more than 200 points with his score of 4,988 points from that meet. Robinson could also pull off a rare two-meet, two-state double Friday, as he’s also entered in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and shot put at the Idaho Duals. Robinson’s first event Friday would be the men’s high jump at 11 a.m. at the Idaho Duals in Moscow, Idaho, and the prelims of the men’s 60-meter hurdles start shortly after at 12 p.m. The men’s

shot put at the Idaho Duals has a floating start time but providing it ends in plenty of time, Robinson should be able to hop the Idaho-Washington border and make the men’s pole vault at the Cougar Indoor at 5 p.m. Sophomore Kamal-Craig Golaube won’t be making any two-state two-meet attempts Friday, but will join Robinson in the prelims of the men’s 60-meter hurdles, an event in which he’s a perpetual threat to set a new school record. Golaube tied the school record of 8.22 seconds at the Big Sky meet last season, and came within three-hundredths of a second of tying the record again at the Vandal Invite at the beginning of the season. Golaube finished in 8.25 seconds to take third in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles at the Vandal Invite, and will be running on the same track at Friday’s Idaho Duals. Freshman Josh Pikes will also be making his return to the Kibbie Dome Friday after posting a standout meet at the Vandal Invite at the beginning of the season. Pikes moved up to third all time in both the men’s 60 meters and men’s 200 meters with his finishes in 6.90 and 21.87 seconds, respectively at the Vandal Invite. Just a little bit improvement from Pikes on the same track could net another school record for the Vikings, as the records in the 60 and 200 meters stand at 6.78 and 21.60 seconds, respectively. The Vikings will also be chasing records in the field events at the Idaho Duals, particularly in the men’s triple jump and women’s pole vault. Senior newcomer Chance Whitehurst has jumped over 48 feet in both meets at which he’s competed so far, and already ranks second all time at Portland State on the back of his mark of 48-11.50 (14.92m) at the Bronco Invitational. Whitehurst’s jump at the Bronco Invite came within 13 inches of the school record in the men’s indoor triple jump, which Yuriy Yermakov set at 50-00.50 (15.25m) in 2000. Meanwhile, just as the Vikings swept the men’s and women’s records in the 5,000 meters last Friday, Saraia Collmer could provide the women’s half of a potential sweep of the pole vault records this Friday. Collmer moved up to second all time with a clearance of 1011.50 (3.34m) at the Vandal Invite and took three attempts at what would have been a school-record height of 11-05.25 (3.49m). Collmer didn’t record a clean attempt for the

COACH HEPBURN BIO David Hepburn was promoted to head coach of the Portland State cross country and track & field programs in August of 2017, after spending that past two seasons as the Vikings’ assistant coach in charge of field events and recruiting coordinator. As a Viking assistant, Hepburn led Donté Robinson to back-to-back second-place finishes in the indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon in 2017, making him the first Viking to earn all-conference honors in both multi-events since Nick Trubachik won both in 2010. Hepburn also led Ta’mara Richey to her first NCAA regional qualification in 2017, as she made it to the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in the women’s triple jump. The Vikings set two school records in the field events in 2017, as well, as Jean-Luc Toku and Troy Bacon set the records in the men’s triple jump and men’s discus, respectively. Toku broke a 44-year-old school record in the men’s triple jump with his jump of 48-07.25 (14.81m), beating out the old record of 4806.00 (14.78m) that Don Hall set in 1973. Bacon, meanwhile, broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 163-08 (49.88m) in his first year competing for the Vikings after initially coming to Portland State as a football player. Hepburn also spent a lot of time with the Portland State cross country teams in 2016, and helped both the men’s and women’s teams to two of their better seasons in program history. Sarah Medved earned All-Big Sky honors on the women’s side, while Alex Cisneros tied the highest individual finish by a Viking men’s runner at the Big Sky meet. Cisneros also broke a 13-year-old school record in the cross country 10k at the NCAA West Regional at the end of the year, finishing in 30:29.8 to beat the old record by more than 37 seconds. Before coming to Portland State, Hepburn coached as an assistant coach at Pacific (Ore.) University from 2014-16. He also coached as an assistant at San Diego State from 200203, as well as at three different Oregon high schools in Creswell High School (1997-2002), Bend High School (2004-05) and Hillsboro High School (2014). Hepburn holds a USATF Level I Certification, as well as a USATF Level II Certification in the jumps. Additionally, Hepburn holds USTFCCCA certifications in the Combined Events and strength and conditioning. As an athlete himself, Hepburn competed in the decathlon at the University of Oregon in 1994 and 1995. A year earlier, Hepburn placed first in the decathlon at the USATF Oregon Association meet.s

MEET NOTES record that time, but like Golaube and Pikes, she will be returning to the site at which she came so close to setting the record at the beginning of the season. And with Gibson and Cisneros showing the way last Friday, it could be another Friday night party for the Portland State track & field team this week. MEET INFO: Feb. 2 – Idaho Duals – Moscow, Idaho (Kibbie Dome) Feb. 3 – Cougar Indoor – Pullman, Wash. (WSU Practice Facility) UPCOMING: The Vikings head to Seattle for two meets at UW’s Dempsey Indoor next weekend. The Vikings will compete at the Husky Classic, Feb. 9-10, and then stay in Seattle for the UW Indoor Open, Feb. 11. Those meets will conclude the indoor regular season for the Vikings, with the Big Sky Indoor Championships coming up, Feb. 22-24, in Flagstaff, Ariz. BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Big Sky Conference eliminated qualifying standards for the Big Sky Indoor Championships last season, and will continue in that mold again this season. Instead of qualifying standards, coaches can fill their rosters as they please with the total number of athletes (men and women) capped at 26 athletes. Northern Arizona University will host the Big Sky Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-24, in Flagstaff, Ariz. NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFICATION: The top 16 declared student-athletes in each event, as well as the top 12 declared relay teams, qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 9-10, in College Station, Texas. Only two Vikings have ever qualified for the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships between Gayle Imran-Sideris (triple jump, 2006) and Geronne Black (60m, 2013). Alex Cisneros currently ranks 13th in the nation in the 5,000 meters after breaking his own school record in the event at the UW Invitational on Jan. 26. If Cisneros can stay in the top 16 through the end of the Big Sky meet, then he’ll become the first Viking men’s athlete to ever qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. UW INVITATIONAL RECAP: Kaila Gibson and Alex Cisneros broke the school records in the indoor women’s and men’s 5,000 meters within one hour of each other Friday, Jan. 26, on the first day of the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash. Gibson started things off with the record in the women’s 5,000 meters, as she became the first female Viking to crack 17 minutes in the indoor 5,000 meters with her finish in 16:53.60. Gibson beat the old record of 17:01.73 by more than eight seconds, and beat her outdoor personal best in the event by close to 30 seconds. Cisneros, meanwhile, had already set the men’s indoor 5,000-meter record last season, but broke his own record by 23 seconds while finishing in 14:19.95. Cisneros’ time put him atop the Big Sky Conference in the men’s 5,000 meters, and put him in qualifying position for the NCAA Indoor Championships at 13th nationally. Additionally, Cisneros finished as the top collegian overall in the men’s 5,000 meters, as well as seventh overall in a field that included professional runners such as the Nike Oregon Project’s Yomif Kejelcha and Galen Rupp, who finished 1-2 overall.

MEET NOTES

MEET NOTES BRONCO INVITATIONAL RECAP: Chance Whitehurst and Jaron Barrow led the way for the Vikings at the Bronco Invitational with three top 10 marks between them while each made their PSU debuts. Whitehurst won the men’s triple jump for the Vikings with a monster debut mark of 48-11.50 (14.92m). Whitehurst moved up to second all time in the men’s indoor triple jump at Portland State with his debut mark, and stands just 13 inches off the school record of 50-00.50 (15.25m) Yuriy Yermakov set in 2000. Barrow also moved into the top 10 all time in the triple jump Saturday, and posted a top 10 mark in the long jump as well. Barrow moved up to seventh all time in both events, with jumps of 45-10.50 (13.98m) in the triple jump and 22-07.75 (6.90m) in the long jump. Freshman Taylor Elliott had already set a top 10 mark while making her PSU debut in the women’s high jump last week, but improved on that mark while winning the event for the second straight week. Elliott cleared 5-05.25 (1.66m) at the Bronco Invite, moving her up to fifth all time in the indoor high jump at Portland State. Junior Austen Hvidsten added a fifth top 10 mark for the Vikings, as he ran the rare 600-meter race in 1:22.80 to move up to fourth all time in the event. VANDAL INVITATIONAL AND MULTI EVENTS RECAP: The Viking newcomers impressed in the program’s first full meet under head coach David Hepburn at the Vandal Invitational and Multi Events, Jan. 12-13, in Moscow, Idaho. The Vikings set eight top 10 all-time marks at the meet, seven of which were set by newcomers. Additionally, newcomers claimed five of the Vikings’ seven event wins at the meet. Freshman Josh Pikes stood out among the newcomers as he swept the men’s 60 and 200 meters while moving up to third all time in both events with his finishes in 6.90 and 21.87 seconds, respectively. Fellow freshman Taylor Elliott also set a top 10 all-time mark at the meet while winning the women’s high jump with a clearance of 5-04.25 (1.63m). Elliott moved into a tie for seventh all time with her mark at the meet, just ahead of fellow freshman Kristen O’Handley, who moved into a tie for ninth all time while clearing 5-03.75 (1.62m) in the high jump while competing in the pentathlon. O’Hadley also moved into the top 10 all time while placing second in the pentathlon with a final score of 3,218 points. Newcomers Angela Mumford and Saraia Collmer also moved into the top 10 all time in the weight throw and pole vault, respectively. Junior Kaila Gibson, meanwhile, was the lone returner to set an all-time mark at the meet, as she moved up to 10th all time in the mile with her finish in 5:04.55. Senior Donté Robinson did not move up in the all-time ranks but still won the heptathlon with a score of 4,988 points. Robinson’s score beat his season-opening time from a year ago, and gave him the Big Sky lead in the event. ED JACOBY INVITATIONAL RECAP: Keegan Winkle narrowly missed the school record in the pole vault while competing as the lone Viking at the Ed Jacoby Invitational, Jan. 12, in Nampa, Idaho. Winkle cleared 15-05.00 (4.70m) at the meet, just 1.75 inches below the school record of 15-06.75 (4.74m) Ben Cogdill set in 2007. Winkle has now cleared 15 feet in the indoor pole vault twice as a Viking, after he cleared 15-00.00 (4.57m) at the Big Sky Indoor Championships last season. Winkle took three attempts with the bar at what would have been a school-record 4.85 meters, but couldn’t record a clean jump to set the record.
