Page 2

2003 NCAA TOURNAMENT

The 2003 Peacocks headed to Orlando, FL for the 2003 MAAC Championships as the #3 seed after finishing the regular season with a 14-4-2 record and a 5-3-1 mark in the MAAC. Saint Peter’s had a tough task in the tournament as they needed three wins to take the crown. They started the tournament by defeating Niagara 4-1, then took care of Rider 2-0 in the semifinals. In the Championship Game, the Peacocks took a 1-0 lead into the 88th minute, but Loyola tied the game at 81:59. The Peacocks responded in the 89th minute as Sylvers Owusu scored to give the Peacocks the lead, the Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Chris Megaloudis scored three goals and added an assist for seven points in the Championships. The goalie tandem of Pat Nagaweicki and John Moschella combined to allow just two goals in the three games.

The Peacocks headed to Brown University riding a five-game winning streak for the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The game was a defensive struggle from the outset as neither team found the net in the first half. Finally, at the 58:03 mark, Rinaldo Chambers scored off a Chris Megaloudis pass to put the Peacocks ahead 1-0. Saint Peter’s put the game away at the 86:49 mark as Chambers scored once again off a pass from Douglas Navarez to make the final 2-0. The victory meant that Saint Peter’s would now travel to Ann Arbor, MI to face #12 Michigan in the second round. The Peacocks found themselves going into the break down 2-0. Sylvers Owusu scored early in the second half, but the Wolverines exploded for three unanswered goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Chambers scored late in the half, but Michigan answered to make the final 6-2 and end the Peacocks magical 2003 season.

2007 NCAA TOURNAMENT

The 2007 Peacocks headed back to the site of their lone MAAC Championship, Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Saint Peter’s entered the tournament as the second seed and took on #7 Niagara in the quarterfinals. The Peacocks and the Purples Eagles played to a 1-1 tie after regulation. In the 96th minute of overtime, Udi Naim found the back of the net off an assist from Chris DeAbreu to give Saint Peter’s a 2-1 win and a berth in the semifinals. In the semifinals they faced #3 Fairfield in a re-match of the 2006 Championship Game. The Peacocks scored goals in the final minute of each half to win 2-1. Juan Gaviria scored the game-winner off a Naim pass with 46-seconds left to send Saint Peter’s to their second straight Championship Game. The Championship Game opponent was #1 Loyola, who Saint Peter’s beat to win the 2003 Championship. In a defensive struggle Loyola scored the only goal of the contest at the 26:18 mark. The Peacocks had opportunities to score with the last one occurring with 1:51 to play, could not and fell 1-0.

The Peacocks had to wait until the last name was read, but the wait was worth it as they were selected to take on the #25 Virginia Cavaliers in the 2007 MAAC Tournament. Saint Peter’s made history as the first team in school history to earn an at-large bid to an NCAA Tournament. The Peacocks headed to Charlottesville for their first round match. Saint Peter’s came out strong and scored the first goal of the match at the 29:11 mark off the foot of Braulio Constantino and took a 1-0 lead into the half. The second half was all Virginia as they tied the game at 50:11 mark and then took the lead at the 77:02 mark. The Cavaliers added an insurance tally at 84:32 and won the match 3-1 to end the Peacocks season.

2010 NCAA TOURNAMENT

The Saint Peter’s College men’s soccer team was defeated by Providence College 6-2 in the First Round of the 2010 Men’s Soccer College Cup. Saint Peter’s (13-6-1) took the first shot of the match, but were outshot by the Friars 14-3 in the opening 45 minutes. In the fourteenth minute, the Friars’ Matt Marcin took a pass and struck from the top of the 18 - finding the left side of the net. Seven minutes later, Wilder Arboleda stole a pass back towards the Peacocks’ goal and poked it past goalkeeper Carlos Suarez for a 2-0 lead. In the 46th minute, Suarez successfully deflected a shot from George Hodge, only to have Toussaint McClure rip the rebound from 18 yards for the third Providence goal. Suarez made five saves in the first half as Saint Peter’s did not register a shot on goal. The Friars led 3-1 corner kicks, while the Peacocks led 6-3 in fouls. With just three minutes gone in the second half, Arboleda capitalized again. Marcin blocked Saint Peter’s attempt to clear the ball and Arboleda corralled it - finding the right corner of the net to give Providence a 4-0 lead. The Peacocks finally got on the scoreboard in the 61st minute as Lebo Pila scored on a penalty kick. In the 68th minute, the Friars’ Daniel Fabian dribbled up the right side and passed to Marcin at the 18 - who sent one just under the crossbar above an outstretched Suarez. Providence scored again less than two minutes later as Brian Grisell drilled a point blank shot into the right corner of the net for a 6-1 lead. Kevin Olson scored the final goal of the match off a corner kick from Pila in the 80th minute. Saint Peter’s outshot Providence 8-5 in the second half, but were outshot for the match 20-11. Suarez made seven saves for the Peacocks.
